"EVEN THE BUZZ PLAYING ON SATURDAY NIGHT AND SEEING ALL THE CONSECUTIVE GAMES GOT THE FANS AND SPORTING COMMUNITY IN CONVERSATION ABOUT NETBALL. IT’S GREAT FORTHE GAME."

M A T C H P R E V I E W W I T H R O S E L E E J E N C K E

ON THE PLETHORA OF UPSETS LAST WEEKEND At the start of a new season, it’s always there for anyone to take. It’s the start of a new, exciting competition. When the games are so even, it’s great for all of us because the awareness and enjoyment of the game for fans and players is only going to improve.

ON THE HYPE SURROUNDING ROUND ONE It was a great build up. To have our season launch and to have that excitement after 12 weeks of pre-season was excellent. Even the buzz playing on Saturday night and seeing all the consecutive games got the fans and sporting community in conversation about netball. It’s great for the game.

ON THE 56 ALL DRAW WITH LIGHTNING We won three of the four quarters, but we really dug a hole for ourselves in that second quarter. We were really disappointed with that. We didn’t value possession and gave away too many easy balls. We’ll be looking to use the ball a lot better on Saturday and rectify things we didn’t execute effectively. Overall, we were disappointed we didn’t get the win because we let ourselves down by not working hard enough.

ON THE DEBUTS OF KIM JENNER AND JEMMA MI MI It’s really important for them to experience what it’s like on court and to know how hard and tough it is at that level. For them it will only improve their game. For them to step out next time better prepared, knowing what to expect, the nerves will be gone and they’ll be able to just get on with playing. It’s just a great opportunity to put them out there and create further depth in our line-up.

ON COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES They have strengths all over the court. They had a very disappointing performance against the Vixens they’ll be wanting to rectify, which makes them exceptionally dangerous. They’ll want to step out on court and prove a point to themselves. We just have to work hard in the tussle and contest. We have to make it difficult for their feeders to get the ball to Caitlyn Thwaites and that comes from the whole team defending and doing their job against their opponent. We really need to bring that defensive pressure for 60 minutes, but also can’t allow for any lapses in our own game like we did against Lightning.

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE ROUND ONE DRAW WITH SUNSHINE COAST LIGHTNING?I thought it was a really good game – tough. We had a short amount of time to try and get a substitute for Mahalia and had been training without our Diamonds for the past couple of weeks while they were away overseas. Eventually we found our feet in the second half of the game and it can only lead to good things moving forward.

GRETEL AND YOU SHOWED FLASHES OF YOUR BEST IN LAST WEEKEND’S CLASH. WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM YOU THIS WEEK?Grets and I still have a lot to work on. Through the third and fourth quarter we were happy with how we were going and finding our feet out there on court. Like I said, we only had a short amount of time until we got to get out on court with all the girls before the round. No excuses though, we have played with each other long enough to know what we’re like out there and eventually we got there. It just took us a longer time than we expected.

YOU’RE UP AGAINST CAREER RIVAL SHARNI LAYTON THIS SATURDAY. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR CLASHES?Sharni is a very fun, exciting and determined player. I think we both have something to settle out there on court, but my main focus is leading my team towards the win and I’ll do whatever it takes to get it. She doesn’t give up until the last whistle of the game and so that gives her the drive and excitement her teammates need. The game is more exciting when she plays, because you don’t know what to expect when she steps out on court. That’s where we have to keep our heads screwed on as to how we play that game with her – not giving her too much. Being really assertive out there will be important for myself and the attackers.

YOU’RE A LEGEND OF THE FIREBIRDS CLUB AND HAVE WON EVERYTHING AT DOMESTIC LEVEL. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED AT THIS POINT OF YOUR CAREER?I just enjoy the game day prep – going out there and knowing you’re not just doing it for yourself, but for your team as well. It’s the Queensland pride I’ve grown to love. It’s been in me for a while now and it’s getting bigger and bigger every year. I just try to make netball as fun and exciting as it is in my head in my performance out on court.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO TAKE THE TWO POINTS THIS WEEKEND?We just have to play netball and can’t get too caught up in the excitement. We just need to pick up where we left off in the last game. Kristen and Jemma both did really well in filling that gap we have in the centre court. We’re excited to get this game going.

A topsy turvy round of results kicked off netball’s new era last weekend as favourites crumbled and five goals or less decided each of the four matches.

In Sydney, a youthful New South Wales Swifts side pushed star-studded Giants Netball all the way. With scores locked 42-42 at three quarter time, some key intercepts from former Firebird Bec Bulley turned the tide and secured the two points for the orange army 58-53.

In Melbourne the round’s biggest boil over occurred, with the Vixens knocking off competition favourites Collingwood Magpies 58-55. The game was notable for the benching of Magpies star Kim Ravaillion at half-time for Shae Brown, with the move allowing Melbourne to take control of the mid-court battle and wrestle the two points from their fancied opponents.

It was all square at 56 all in the first ever Queensland derby between Queensland Firebirds and Sunshine Coast Lightning, with a heart stopping finale capping high-intensity battle. The Firebirds won three of the four quarters against their cross-town rivals, with an uncharacteristic second frame dip requiring all of their trademark heart to claw back a competition point at full-time.

In the final match of the round, Adelaide Thunderbirds completed a thrilling comeback to topple West Coast Fever 56-51. The ladies in pink romped in a 19-8 fourth quarter to overturn a six goal deficit and take a valuable two points.

The Firebirds started their unprecedented ANZ Championship dynasty under coach Roselee Jencke in remarkable fashion in 2011, capping an undefeated season with a hard-fought win in the grand final against Northern Mystics.

Finishing the season a perfect 13-0, the Firebirds thrashed Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the semi-finals, before backing up in the final a fortnight later to win by 13 goals. Who said the big one-three was an unlucky number?

Queensland the Mystics battled valiantly for the first half, with scores locked 12-12 after the first break and 26-24 Firebirds at the half.

But a reshuffle to the Mystics line-up and the injection of Amy Steel to goal defence for

the Firebirds saw Nat Medhurst take control of the game with partner in crime Romelda Aiken. The now West Coast Fever star laid on a bevy of goals as the ladies in purple shot to a seven-goal lead in five minutes and went into three quarter time up by a dozen.

They finished the job in fourth, winning 57-44 to kick-start an era which would see the Firebirds reach five grand finals and capture three premierships in six years.
