HELP STOCK THE “GREEN MOUNTAIN CHRISTMAS GIFT ROOM”

AT THE CHRISTIAN CENTER Green Mountain Christian Center announces the Sixth Annual Green Mountain Christmas on

Dec. 20 and 21,  at Green Mountain Christian Center (GMCC), 440 Main St. Bennington,

Vermont. The plans include the Gift Room for Parents in Need, gift wrapping, and crafts for the

children, Christmas music, cookies and refreshments, and other Christmastide activities The Gift

Room for parents in need is at the center of the activities. Green Mountain Christian Center will

do its best again this year to fill the toy gap, but we will obviously need help. You can donate toys

or cash to help stock the GIFT ROOM where parents in need can select presents for their

children ages 10 and under. Thanks to the generosity of many businesses and individuals in this

community, Christmas 2012 was a huge success providing local parents with gifts for their chil-

dren. We were able to help over 250 parents with toys for approximately 500 children from

throughout the Southwestern Vermont region, Bennington, Pownal, Woodford, Shaftsbury, Arling-

ton, Hoosick Falls, White Creek and others. Given the continued economic difficulties we expect

the need has increased, so we are planning to assist 200-300 parents (500-600 local children).

Donations can be mailed or delivered to Green Mountain Christian Center, 440 Main St. Bennington,VT (office in rear). The office is open Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 9 am to 3:30 pm and on Monday

& Thursday 9am to 12 noon. Parents in need should call the Green Mountain Christian Center

office at 802-447-7224 for a reservation before December 21, 2013.

Nelson Mandela always had a sense about him of someonewho knew the meaning of leadership. The Mandela who led the African National Congress into gov-

ernment displayed a conspicuous sense of his own dignity and aself-belief that nothing in 27 years of imprisonment had beencapable of destroying.Although Mr Mandela frequently described himself as simply

part of the ANC's leadership, there was never any doubt that hewas the most potent political figure of his generation in SouthAfrica. To the wider world he represented many things, not the least

an icon of freedom but also the most vivid example in moderntimes of the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. Back inthe early 1990s, President, FW De Klerk, said that he foundMandela's lack of bitterness "astonishing".

Mandela’s fundamental creed was best expressed in his ad-dress to the sabotage trial in 1964. "I have fought against whitedomination, and I have fought against black domination."

Truly a remarkable man. But, I cannot help but wonder if he could have had such achievements had it not been for WinnieMandela’s devotion to him and his cause. After a divorce from his first wife Evelyn, Mandela married

Winnie in 1958. But soon he went underground and, in 1962,was put on trial. He would spend 27 years in prison, separatedfrom her and their two daughters by the dividing glass screen of the visitor room. Madikizela-Mandela carried on his fight whilehe languished in prison. She was regularly detained by the apart-heid government. She was tortured, subjected to house arrest, kept under surveillance, held in solitary confinement for a yearand banished to a remote town. However, she was by his sidewhen he left prison and by his side while he suffered his lastindignities, despite their divorce in 1996. She is more than his“sidekick” in their great struggle for freedoms and equal oppor-tunities. .

This week’s ag report is sponsored by:

EPA: Friend or foe?Cattle roaming the land. Lush green corn lining country roads. This is the picture of Americanagriculture--a picture that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tells us they want to notonly stay, but to be even more efficient in the future. "We at EPA really want to partner with themto get to the common goals we all share: cleaner air, cleaner water, cleaner land," says SarahBittleman, EPA Ag Counselor. "At EPA we don’t think we can do it wi thout agriculture."  Despite the EPA's statements, groups such as the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA)say it's become a war with the agency says Collin Woodall, NCBA Vice President of GovernmentAffairs. NCBA says it's EPA’s actions, not its talk, that spark fear within the industry--fear thatone day EPA will dictate not only what they farm or ranch, but how they do it. Woodall says thelatest example is the upcoming ruling on the Clean Water Act. "Now we're worried about theireffort to try to once again redef ine what is a water of the U.S. by taking the word ‘navigable’ outof that definition," says Woodall.

He says that whether it be an in-ground stock tank or even a dry stream, those bodies of waterwould be deemed a water of the U.S, and once that happens, he says it falls under the jurisdictionof EPA. "It'd be a huge land grab, because basically if thi s moves forward, producers would haveto file for a permit from the EPA to use that body of water and the land around it," says Woodall.  "We understand at EPA that we are regarded with a certain amount of cynicism, but the bottomline is we share the same goals as farmers and ranchers," says Bittleman. "We want to see America’sfarmers and ranchers be productive; we want [them] to stay on the land and keep growing, pro-ducing, and innovating."  "While I understand that people are concerned that EPA not overreach its jurisdictional bound-aries on waters of the U.S., we think there’s been a lot of confusion in this area," says Bittleman."And what EPA is really intending to do is to provide some clarification."Bittleman says that once the ruling is released, there will be a comment period where producershave time to voice their concerns.  "In the meantime, the existing agricultural exemptions under the law still exist, and we expect willcontinue to exist," she says.  Bittleman says that despite the vocal concerns from various agriculture groups, EPA wants tohelp farmers succeed."A whole host of folks that actually want to help agriculture stay on the land, keep doing whatthey're doing, keep doing what they love, and keep improving what they do, she says.  EPA: Friend or foe? It’s becoming clearer.
