Sketches of Spain: A Creative Writing Seminar(3 credits)

NY DEPARTURE & RETURN DATES: JULY 20–AUGUST 14, 2017 BARCELONA & MADRID, SPAIN

Imagine the shimmering of hills like white elephants in the distance, Flamenco music, the jazz of Miles Davis, as you sit in a café to sketch out your sense of place and self-discovery in Spain. From Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona to Madrid’s Plaza Mayor and buzzing street life scene, these Spanish cityscapes become your canvass to evoke place in only the way prose can. To further ground us in craft and technique, we also study writers leaving their own indelible portraits of Spain in print, to include Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Martha Gellhorn, George Orwell, and Miguel Delibes.
