Company, LTD., in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was appointed
with every measure o elegance.
From the time o her maiden voyage in 1936, the Queen Mary was
regarded as the only way to travel by the elite o high society. At a
massive 81,237 tons and 1,019.5 eet in length, she accommodated up
to 2,000 passengers in pampered luxury. With the outbreak o World
War II, she was commissioned into service to carry more than 765,000troops and travel more than 560,000 miles, playing a substantial role in
every major Allied campaign. Following the war, she resumed her place
as the monarch o the waterways. Retired in 1967, she was purchased
by the City o Long Beach, Caliornia, where she is permanently berthed
today as a unique leisure and meeting hotel.
There was a time when transatlantic passage aboard an ocean liner
was the most luxurious way to travel the world. Movie stars, heads
o state, millionaires and royalty alike sailed the oceans while enjoying
world-class amenities and service. At the helm o the ocean travel
industry, Cunard ound its eet depleted by World War I commissions.
Plans began or THE QUEEN MARYSM and her sister ship, the Queen
Elizabeth, in 1930. These ships were imagined to be the biggest,
