Galilee Garden at Harbor View
The advisory committee of the Galilee Garden at Harbor View‘s will be meeting on Dec. 1,
2016, 7:00 pm, at Galilee Lutheran Church in Chester. Although we have a nice group of
volunteers, we do still need to fill the following positions on the board: treasurer, fund rais-
er, and a plot manager. At this meeting, we hope to finalize committee groups.
At our last Master Gardener meeting, it was suggested that the QAC MG program could
make a donation to the current fundraising campaign. Since this seems to be more compli-
cated than we initially thought, instead, please consider making an individual donation.
If you would like to make donation, please go to the following website:
https://www.seedmoney.org/campaign/233/galilee-garden-at-harbor-view
If we collect $600 by December 15th, we will be taken into consideration to
receive an additional $400. So far we have collected $305.
We have developed a garden plan that complies with county regulations. We are very happy
to have a Boy Scout setting up our first ten raised beds as his Eagle Scout project. Our goal
is to have the garden ready by March l, 2017.
Mark your calendars for a
“Garden Day” at the Kent Is-
land Public Library, February
25th, from 10:30-1:00. In addition
to information about the Com-
munity Garden, we will hold a
seed exchange and provide gen-
eral gardening info.
The following Master Gar-
deners have volunteered to
work on this project:
Karen Wimsatt, Dean Horowitz,
Jane Chambers, Elizabeth Riffe, Cindy Riegel, and Nancy O’Connor. We would also like to
welcome Kate Greer who will be doing publicity for us. If anyone else is interested in joining
this group, please contact Nancy O’Connor at [email protected] or 443-249-0646.

Location: 830 Romancoke Rd, Stevensville, MD 21666
The theme will be gardening tips for December and handouts for the care of holiday
plants.
At the November Plant Clinic we created a display of composting practices coinciding with
the falliing of tree leaves along with our monthly gardening tips. Denise Malueg graciously
brought her Black Compost Display including some hands-on compost. Four of us,
including Nick Stoer, had a productive time with at least 20 people stopping by the booth
to ask questions. We hope you will consider volunteering in the future to help out!

Annual Plant Sale The following three people have offered to co-chair the plant
sale committee: Laura Klinger, Shelia Shorter, Cathy Tengwall
We thank them so very much!! Obviously they are going to
need lots of help! If you are interested as well, please contact
Cathy Tengwall, [email protected]
Mentoring Committee As discussed at the November monthly meeting, Sue Goward, Laura Klinger, Jane Smith, Bob
Macfarlane and Nick Stoer are functioning as an ad hoc committee to develop a QAC mentoring
process for 2017 based on experiences and practices of other MG programs. They will be
discussing their findings with the Steering Committee and present details at the Monthly Meeting
in January. They have already spoken with Mikaela Boley, the Talbot County MG Coordinator
who runs the successful mentoring process. They have also spoken in depth with the Master
Gardener mentoring guru for the 67-county Alabama Cooperative Extension Program (ACES)
whose mentoring strategies have been adapted and adopted in a number of states. Other
outreach and homework is underway.
The ad hoc committee will be meeting on December 7th in the morning. If you would
like to join them, please contact Nick at [email protected].

In Memoriam - Annie Ittu March 20, 1957 – November 19, 2016
It is with deep sadness that I report on the untimely passing of
former Queen Anne’s County Master Gardener Annie Ittu.
Annie passed away in her sleep in the early hours of Saturday,
November 19, at her home in Kure Beach, North Carolina, at
the age of 59.
Annie joined the Queen Anne’s County Master Gardeners
with the class of 2004. She was a dedicated gardener, and
soon joined the Bay-Wise committee. Although Annie was
very shy, she was passionate about the Bay-Wise principles,
and ultimately took over chairing the committee.
Annie’s then-husband John Ittu also joined the Master Gar-
deners in 2009. Together they were a formidable team,
providing many hours of volunteer service on vegetable gar-
den education, Bay-Wise consultations, making rain barrels
and more.
Annie moved to North Carolina in 2014 and John followed. Recently they have become
closer.

Youth Gardening
Nancy O’Connor has been running a Youth Gardening Program, "Friends of the Garden",
at the KI Library, In October the theme was spiders. They read a book and did a spider
project. Not only does Nancy educate the children, but she gives valuable information to
the parents who attend as well.
Some of the themes for the Spring will be worms and bees. "Friends of the Garden"
meets every 3rd Wednesday, 4:30- 5:30pm at the KI Library. The program takes places
from Aug—Oct. and March—May. Children in grades K - 3 are invited to attend. The KI
Garden Club provides funds for the program. If you are interested in helping out, please
contact Nancy O’Connor, [email protected] or 443-249-0646.
MG’s Report: Bay-Wise
Pollinator or Natural Enemy of the Month:
In the past, my husband, Dave Kyger, has drilled hundreds of holes in logs for bees to use
as nest sites to deposit eggs and build our pollinator population. But bees have their own
ideas, as I discovered when collecting garden "ornaments" for winter storage. This corn-on
-the-cob-eating lamb was apparently the perfect location for a certain bee's eggs. The
dauber bee or wasp (some Megachile bees use mud) crafted a little mud nest in each of
Lucky Lamb's ears! Little holes in the mudpack indicate that the bees hatched and flew
away, hopefully enjoying all that our garden offered.
Let this be a reminder for us all to clean our ears! Submitted by Denise Malueg
