T he Louisville and Ohio State Chapters have taken advantage of the Fraternity's Graduate Advisor Program to give their members every advantage.

The mission of the Graduate Advisor Program is to create and maintain a sound educational environment that fosters the development of college men. The primary responsibility of a graduate advisor is to act as a facilitator for the chapter and to enhance the educational development of each member.

Brothers Zachary M. Eckels, Louisville '99, and Jonathan M. Rhoades, Miami '98, have accepted the challenge.

Zac received his B.A. in English in May 1999 from the University of Louisville, and immediately applied for the

Graduate Advisor post at the Louisville Chapter of Delta Upsilon. His undergraduate chapter positions included treasurer in 1997 and president in 1998. He also was actively involved in the chapter's membership recruitment program and scholarship program, as well as serving as intramural chairman and community service chairman.

Brother Eckels is now enrolled in the University of Louisville's Secondary Education Graduate Program.

Jonathan Rhoades received a B.S. in Applied Science in May 1998 from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. His major was Systems Analysis.

Research Initiative Update

.. Twenty-eight percent of fraternity members said their residences were alcohol-free versus 31 % of the independent men.

I n the July 1997 issue of the Quarterly the

results of the first phase of the Research Initiative, jointly commissioned by the National Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), were reported. The research into the impact of fraternity/sorority affiliation was conducted by the

The findings were updated in the Summer 1998 issue of the Quarterly, and this is the third report. There are six predominant findings in the current phase of the study.

.. Alcohol-free housing and education for undergraduates on the risks of alcohol reduce the amount and frequency of alcohol use.

.. In fraternities that actively encourage responsible approaches to alcohol, members report fewer alcohol-related problems.

.. Leaders of alcohol-sensitive chapters drink less and less often than other fraternity members.

.. Members of alcohol-sensitive chapters are more satisfied with their academic experiences, and more positive about the role their chapters play in encouraging studying, than are members of chapters that do not provide alcohol education or an alcohol-free environment.

.. Even in alcohol-sensitive chapters, drinking is heavier and more common than among independent students.

As the 20th century comes to a close, the Fraternity would like to recognize those alumni who have excelled on professional gridirons over the last 100 years. According to our research, there

. have now been 145 Brothers in pro football's various leagues, including some of the game's greatest players.

The original research to determine DU pro players was done by R. DeWayne Holman, San Jose '64, while a member of the DU field staff. His original findings appeared in a January, 1967 Quarterly feature. At that time, there were 89 DU pro players and one prominent former head coach. Since then, numerous Brothers have entered the pro game and new research has uncovered additional oldtimers. De Wayne also provided his input for this All-Century Pro Team selection after reviewing the credentials of the top candidates at each position.

Leading the offensive platoon is ten year Canadian Football League quarterback Tom Burgess, Colgate '86, who ranks ninth in CFL career passing with 2,118 completions, 4,034 attempts, 30,308 yards and 190 touchdown passes. He was named to the All-Eastern Football Conference team in 1990 and 1992 and had his best year in 1993, throwing for 5,063 yards and 30 TDs. Tom was with the Ottawa Rough Riders (1986,1992-93), Saskatchewan Roughriders (1987-89,1994-95) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1990-91). He played in two Grey Cups and was named Offensive Star of the 1990 game.

Fullback Mark Vaneeghen, Colgate '74, was a ten year NFL star with the Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots, rushing for 6,651 yards and 37 TDs while catching 174 passes for 1,583 yards. In 1977, he ran for 1,273 yards and was named to the AlI­NFL second ·team. Mark played in two Super Bowls and one Pro Bowl.

Halfback Hugh Gallarneau, Stanford '41 was on the All-NFL first team in 1946 and played in three NFL championship games

for the Chicago Bears. He ran for 1,421 career yards, was a return specialist and scored 33 TDs.

The receiving corps features three stars of the 1960's. Fred Arbanas, Michigall State '61, spent 10 seasons with the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs and was named to the All-AFL first team four times and the All-AFL second team twice. He had 198 career catches for 3,101 yards and 34 TDs. A member of the Chiefs Hall of Fame, Fred played in two Super Bowls and five AFL All-Star Games.

Paul Fladey, Northweste1"ll '63, was NFL Rookie of the Year for Minnesota in 1963, caught 50 passes for 896 yards, seven scores in 1965 and played in the 1967 Pro Bowl. During his eight year career, Paul had 306 receptions for 4,905 yards, 24 TDs.

Jacque Mackinnon, Colgate '61, spent ten seasons with the Chargers (1961-69) and Raiders (1970). He played in two AFL All-Star Games, was on the All-AFL second team in 1968 and caught 112 passes for 2,109 yards, 20 TDs.

Elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965, guard Danny Fortmann, Colgate :16, leads the offensive line. Over eight seasons with the Chicago Bears (1936-43), he was named to the

All-NFL first team six times (1938-43) and the All-NFL second team twice (1936-37). Danny played in four

NFL title games, three Pro Bowls and was on the NFL Team of the 1930's Decade.

Mike Withycombe, Fresllo '88, played eight seasons in three leagues, ending his

career in 1997 as an All-Western Football Conference first teamer

for the British Columbia Lions. He won the 1995 CFL Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award and was AlI­CFL for the Grey Cup­winning Baltimore Stallions. Earlier, Mike was named to

• the All-World League first team in 1991 while playing for the Orlando Thunder. He also played for the NFL Giants (1988), Jets (1989), Steelers (1991) and Bengals (1991-92).

Carl Kammerer, Pacific '60

Although his NFL career was limited to just four years (1946-49), tackle Russ Thomas, Ohio State '46, played a significant

role in the history of the Detroit Lions for 43 seasons. He was named to the All­NFL second team in 1947 and was team captain before a knee injury ended his career. He became assistant coach, scout,

I and color man on Lions broadcasts before moving into the front office in 1964 as director of player personnel. Russ was promoted to general manager in 1967, then was named Executive Vice President/general manager in 1972. He continued in that role with the Lions until retiring in 1989.

Our center is 12 year NFL star Ed Flanagan, Purdue '65, who appeared in 165 contests for the Lions (1965-74) and

Chargers (1975-76) . A four-time Pro Bowl player, he was named to the AlI­NFL second team in 1969-70 and the All-NFC team in 1971.

Tackle Russ Hathaway, Indiana '18, began his career in the Ohio League (1919) then spent eight seasons in the NFL with Muncie, Dayton, Canton, Pottsville and Buffalo. He was on the AlI­NFL second team in 1922-23.

Pro football's first soccer-style kicker, Pete Gogolak, Comel! '64, was with the Buffalo Bills (1964-65) and New York Giants (1966-74), posting three seasons with more than 100 points. He led the

AFL with 28 field goals in 1965, earning All-AFL first team selection. Pete finished his 11 year pro career with 173 field goals and 863 points.

The strength of our All-Century defensive unit is in the line backing corps, led by seven-time Pro Bowl player Randy Gradishar, Ohio State '74, the Denver Broncos' career leader with 1,958 tackles. He was named to the All-NFL first team five straight years (1977-81), the All-NFL second team in 1983 (his final season) and the All-AFC first team rwice (1976,1982). Randy had 20 career interceptions for 335 yards, rwo TDs and played in Super Bowl XlI.

Chuck Drazenovich, Perm State '50, played 10 seasons for the Washington Redskins, went to four Pro Bowls and earned All-NFL second team honors in 1956-57-58. He recorded 15 career interceptions for 165 yards and recovered seven fumbles.

Wally Hilgenberg, Iowa '64, played the most NFL games (199) and seasons (15) of any DU pro. With the Lions (1964-66) and Vikings (1968-79), he appeared in four Super Bowls and was on the AlI­NFC first team in 1973.

Walt Michaels, Washington & Lee '51, broke in with the Green Bay Packers in 1951 then spent ten seasons with the C leveland Browns, going to five Pro Bowls and five NFL title games. He was a player-coach for the New York Jets in 1963. Walt was an All-NFL first teamer in 1959, gained All-NFL second team honors three times (1957-58,1960) and was All-NFC in 1961. Over 133 pro I games, he had 11 interceptions for 139

yards, t\vo TDs. Walt later served as head coach of the Jets (1977-82) and the USFL New Jersey Generals (1984-85) .

On the defensive line are three modern era standouts. End Carl Kammerer, Pacific '60, had a good NFL career, appearing in 123 games for the San Francisco 4gers (1961-62) and Washington Redskins (1963-69) .

Nose tackle Dino Mangiero, Rutgers '80, played in 64 NFL games and posted eight career sacks for the Kansas City Chiefs (1980-83) , Seattle Sealmvks (1984) and New England Patriots (1987).

End Ed Molstad, Alberta '70, appeared in 96 CFL contests for the Edmonton Eskimos (1968-73), recovered seven fumbles and played in the 1973 Grey Cup game.

The leader of the secondary is John Wydareny, Weste1'1l Ontfl1"io '63, who is tied for seventh in CFL career interceptions with 52 for 747 yards. Playing for the Toronto Argonauts (1963-65) and Edmonton Eskimos (1966-72), he was named AlI-CFL in 1969-70 and AlI-WFC in 1967. John picked off 11 passes in both 1969 and 1970 and twice had three interceptions in a game. Also from the CFL is Bill Britton, Westenl Ontario '58, who played more

than 100 games for the British Columbia Lions (1958-61) and Calgary Stampeders (1962-64).

Two oldtimers who played both ways round out the backfield. Hank Bruder, Northwestel'1l '31, played in 106 games for the Packers (1931-39) and Steelers (1940). He is in the Packers Hall of Fame and played in one Pro Bowl.

Henry "Hinkey" Haines, Penn State '21, played six seasons for the Giants (1925-28) and Staten Island (1929,1931), earning All-NFL second team honors in 1926-27 and All-NFL third team status in 1925. He also served as Staten Island head I coach during part of 1931 and was later I

an NFL official.

Selected as our punter is Alan Ford, Pacific '65, who played 179 games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1965-76) . He holds the club record for career punts with 1,041 (12th best in CFL history) for 41 ,880 yards and also holds the Grey Cup record for longest punt (87 yards in I 1967) . Alan had seven seasons of 100 punts or more, with a best average of 42.1 for 73 punts in 1972. He has been general i manager and Chief Operating Officer of the Roughriders since 1989.

A number of other DU players are also deserving of special mention for their careers. Quarterback Gary Wood,

I Cornell '64, played eight seasons with I the Giants, Saints and Ottawa Rough I Riders, throwing for 6,391 yards and earning CFL AlI-EFC honors in 1970. Quarterback Frank McGill, McGill '15, is in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, as is QB-coach Billy Foulds, Tin'ollto '11, in the Builders category. Halfback Jack Ernst, Lafayette '25, played six pro seasons and led the NFL

: Tight end Bruce Cosiet, Pacific '68, I played in 101 games for Cincinnati I (1969-76) and has been head coach of the Jets (1990-93) and Bengals (1996-99). Wingback Alan Ford, Pacific '65, had 261 career receptions for 3,850 yards and rushed for 1,086 yards in the CFL. Other NFL receivers include Bob Long, Wichita '63 (eight seasons), Ken Margerum, Stanford '81 (seven seasons), and Barry Pearson, N01·tlJlVestern '73 (five seasons).

Linemen of note include center Joe Wostoupal, Nebraska '26 (All-NFL honors in 1928-29-30); center Bill Mitchell, westem Ontario '60 (over 100 CFL games); guard Jim Flower, Ohio State '19 (All-NFL second team in 1922); and guard Barry French, Purdue '44 (five pro years). Other fine linebackers include eight year New York Jet John Ebersole, Penn State '70 (108 games); Peter Martin, western Ontario '64 (104 CFL games for Toronto); and Dick Woodard, Iowa '49 (five NFL years).

Kicker Mick Luckhurst, Califomia '80, spent eight seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and scored 558 points (including 115 field goals). Bill Mitchell, Western Ontario '60, scored 260 kicking points, including a 58 yard field goal in 1964. Bob Isbister, Toronto '37, ranked as a leading punter in Canadian football from 1937 to 1939.

DU's top pro coach is George "Potsy" Clark, Illinois '16, who led the Portsmouth Spartans (1931-33), Detroit Lions (1934-36,1940) and Brooklyn Dodgers (1937-39). He won the 1935 NFL title and had a career record of 64-42-12. Celebrating 50 Years of Impact 1949·1999

Starting as a vision of former Delta Upsilon International Fraternity President, Hugh Nesbitt, Ohio State

, 14, the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation was incorporated 50 years ago, in December of 1949.

Brother Nesbitt's hope was that the Foundation would grow in size and influence, such that it would eventually impact every brother in Delta Upsilon through the provision of scholarships to undergraduate members. Within the first three years of the Foundation's operation, Brother Nesbitt contributed to

it generously, providing over $30,000 of desperately needed start-up capital. Sadly, however, less than four years after the Foundation was established, Brother Nesbitt passed away.

Yet the concept to help strengthen the academic achievement of our brothers and the educational resources available to them, proved to be an enduringly worthy mission. Brother Nesbitt's leadership role within the Foundation was undertaken by his protege and fliend,1. Paul McNamara, Miami '29.

From 1949 until his death in 1994, Brother McNamara was a tireless advocate for the Educational Foundation and the role he knew it played in impacting the lives of young DU brothers.

In this year's Annual Report of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation, we celebrate visionary brothers such as Hugh Nesbitt and Paul McNamara, and those who through gifts of time and financial resources continue the tradition of strong stewardship which the Foundation enjoys today.

The Programs and Services Supported bv the DU Educational Foundation

From Brother Nesbitt's initial investment in the early 1950s, the Foundation's total assets now stand at $3,024,936. This amount has been accumulated despite the fact that the Foundation has never engaged in a capital campaign.

Each year, interest income from the Foundation's endowed resources

combined with revenue from its Annual Campaign for Brothers, is directed to help fund innovative educational programs and services for our undergraduate members. Thanks to the generosity and loyalty of DU alumni and friends, the Foundation today makes grants to support the following worthy educational initiatives for our brothers.

The Leadership Institite

Since its founding in 1948, the simple assertion of DU's annual Leadership Institute is that leadership can be learned.

Ironically, only in comparatively recent times have colleges and universities started to treat the subject of leadership and team building as a legitimate area of study and academic pursuit. For half a century, Delta Upsilon and the Educational Foundation have recognized the need among student leaders to be

exposed to a cuniculum that addressses how to create a shared vision;

ilijiiiijiiiiiiiiiiiiil ethical and effective decision making;

delegation of important tasks to capable individuals and teams - among many other qualities and attributes of outstanding leadership.

In 1999, the Educational Foundation made a grant of $37,190 to help underwrite the Leadership Institute in Denver, CO. The event attracted over 230 undergraduate chapter leaders and more than 70 committed alumni volunteers who serve as alumni corporation officers and chapter advisors. The three-day program included seminars and forums on the most critical issues facing our young leaders today. Perhaps the most important educational benefit, however,

were the thousands of conversations between brothers - exchanging thoughts, ideas, and solutions on how to meet the challenges they face.

The Institute also maintained its tradition of educating DU brothers on their legislative responsibility to their chapters. Since 1847, the annual DU Convention has recognized one representative from every chapter to discuss and debate matters affecting the Fraternity as a whole. As part of the Institute curriculum, the 1999 Annual DU Convention approved a pledge and initiation fee increase in order to ensure the Fraternity's continued strength in the twilight of this millenium and the dawn of the next.

Five years ago, most chapter houses did not have computer rooms. Today, all fraternities face increasing competition from dorm facilities that are fully wired for Internet access and a variety of high technology applications. Undergraduate presidents and recruitment chairmen must respond with creative and engaging recruitment plans to keep DU chapters viable.

Finally, on most campuses, a return to in loco parentis and its accompanying decrease in tolerance for misconduct, has caused chapter presidents to inspire and exert more control over the behavior of members.

To help meet the confluence and complexity of challenges that today's chapter presidents must face, the International Fraternity offers the annual Presidents Academy, held in January of each year.

One of the most valuable and innovative aspects of the Academy program is a

1999 Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation Annual Report curriculum for chapter recruitment chairmen. Reviews of the symposium were uniformly positive, especially among those from campuses where rush starts in January and February.

Each year the Educational Foundation makes a significant grant to the Presidents Academy, ensuring that costs to each undergraduate are modest. As a result, the Academy regularly achieves 90% attendance (or better) from DU's top undergraduate leaders.

THE STili PR06111M FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

The Star Program seeks to have a profound impact on the growth and personal development of each individual DU pledge and brother. While many of the developmental and educational resources of our chapters are focused on pledges, the Star Program seeks to expand each chapter's organized commitment to the growth and learning of its members.

In 1994, the Fraternity's Board of Directors initiated discussion on a vision for DU in the 21st century. The Board concluded that it wanted a fraternity experience for every undergraduate that made him a person capable of commitment and deep friendship; a servant to his community; a lifelong student; a well-prepared and connected

career explorer, and a young man capable of complete independence - grounded in the practical skills and knowledge required for life after college.

To start a journey toward this vision, the Star Program concept was developed. Hallmarks of the initiative are:

• An individually paced, goal-based curriculum, asking pledges and brothers to set and reach goals over an entire undergraduate career, in five personal development areas:

Teal1l­building sessions demonstrate how the chapter members can work together for the betterment of the whole chaptel:

• An Internet delivery mechanism, allowing program cUlTiculum to reach every undergraduate brother via his desktop personal computer.

• Software that connects each student to resources on his campus; in his chapter; at the DU Headquarters in Indianapolis; and among other undergraduate and alumni brothers around the world from all chapters.

The Educational Foundation is committed to the funding of this visionary program and the tremendous effect it will have on our brothers.

LEADERSHIP CONSULTANTS

For most of the 20th century, the Fraternity has sought to assist chapters directly through on-site visits from staff of the International Headquarters. In the past, such staff members were called "field secretaries" - today they are known as Leadership Consultants.

The accumulated best practices of all our chapters are embodied in a DU Leadership Consultant; a full time employee of the Fraternity who travels up to 50,000 miles in an academic year visiting DU chapters and colonies

1999 Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation Annual Report throughout North America. At each stop, consultants meet with undergraduate members, and visit with alumni officers and university greek advisors .

Upon completion of his visit, each consultant delivers a written report of strategies to improve chapter operations in recruitment, member education, financial management, alumni relations, academic performance, and overall administrative efficiency. Whenever possible, a consultant discusses highlights of his report at a meeting of the entire chapter.

A consistent commitment to on-site education and support is essential, since our chapters experience 100% turnover in membership every four years. In the past, critically timed Leadership Consultant visits have arguably saved struggling chapters from closing, as well as raising the bar to inspire our outstanding groups to greater achievement.

The Educational Foundation is proud to help meet the need for this longstanding program.

CHAPTER EDUCATIONAL ACCOUNTS AND TRUSTS

Within the past five years the Educational Foundation has introduced the Chapter Educatiollal Accoullt (CEA) and Chapter Educatiollal Trust (CET) programs, which provide financial

assistance to individual chapters. Each program offers the opportunity to establish funds within the Educational Foundation for chapter use only. Donors can make gifts to these restricted funds and claim a tax deduction for the amount of the gift.

By way of definition, the general characteristics of a CEA are that it:

• Is established to meet educational needs over a defined period (e.g., to purchase or renovate educational areas and equipment in a chapter house) .

• Does not primarily seek to build principal, but to offer liquidity.

The general characteristic of a CET is that it:

• Is permanently established to help meet educational needs of a chapter (e.g., to provide endowment interest­which funds annual scholarships for undergraduates) .

CEA and CET grants to individual chapters constitute an increasingly important service of the Foundation, to help meet the educational needs of our undergraduate brothers.

REGIONAL LEADERSHIP SEMINARS

To reach a broader spectrum of undergraduate members, as well as address challenges particular to specific

regions in North America, the Educational Foundation once again helped sponsor the 1999 Regional Leadership Seminar (RLS) program. In addition to providing participants with two days of leadership education programming; elections held annually at each RLS result in forming the membership for DU's Undergraduate Advisory Board.

THE QUIIRTERlY MAGAZINE AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS

The Educational Foundation underwrites the cost for all pages of its Annual Report, and other Foundation-related items which appear in the Quarterly magazine. In addition, the Foundation has helped fund two educational newsletters for undergraduates , The DU Dialogue, and The Shield, which address chapter management and loss prevention issues, respectively.

THE PEARSON-GARFiElD PRESIDENT MENTOR PROGRAM

Launched with start-up funding from the Educational Foundation in 1998, the Pearson-Garfield Mentor Program is working to match our 83 undergraduate chapter/colony presidents with an alumnus mentor. The initial thrust of the program is to provide each chapter president with career development guidance and support. Eventually, the hope is to pair every DU undergraduate (nearly 3,000 of them) with an alumnus mentor.

GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

To facilitate on-site chapter guidance, cOllnseling and experienced leadership, the Educational Foundation has made scholarship grants to DU Graduate students who serve a chapter as a live-in advisor. For an application or additional details, please contact DU Headquarters in Indianapolis.

A t the 1999 Annual Meeting of the Delta Upsilon Educational Foundation, two brothers were added to the Board of Trustees.

Edwin D. Crane, Arkansas '76, a professional fund raiser for over 20 years, is president of The Gladney Fund which provides funding for The Gladney Center, the country's preeminent non­sectarian private adoption and maternity services agency.

During Ed's career he has been associated with and led fund-raising programs which produced $70 million for the institutions with which he was affiliated, including $25 million during the last eight years. He also served as a fund-raising volunteer with several organizations

including the YMCA, chambers of commerce, arts councils and professional organizations, and has counseled other organizations about fund-raising.

Joining Brother Crane on the DUEF Board is John T. Weisel, Oregon '48. John spent his career as a practicing physician and surgeon, an ophthalmologist in Medford, Oregon, and as senior partner and founder of Medical Eye Center, serving southern Oregon and Northern California. The practice was primarily involved in cataract-lens implant surgery.

Brother Weisel has lectured on cataract surgery in Southeast Asia, South Africa, Australia, and at other international meetings giving scientific presentations.

John also served on the Fraternity's Board of Directors from 1991 to 1995.

To encourage charitable giving among employees and retirees, many larger companies have established matching gift programs. Such

programs serve to double the impact of an individual's gift to a chmitable cause by using corporate funds to match gifts made by donors.

We recommend checking with your human resources department to determine whether a matching gift program exists. If so, the DU Educational Foundation may be an eligible recipient. Matching gift policies vary by individual company, but a simple inquiry on your part could result in the doubling (or sometimes tripling) of your gift to benefit your DU brothers.

Chapter Spotlights

DU's Newest Colony!

O n September 9,1999, Delta Upsilon welcomed a new colony at the University of Texas - Pan American in Edinburg,

Texas. Fifteen interest group members participated in the ceremony and more men are expected to become colony members before the end of the semester.

Edinburg community and will be participating in the Texas Adopt-A-Highway program.

DU's Pan American Colony is in the process of developing a strong member education program by scheduling three educational seminars throughout the semester, and then documenting this program so that it can be utilized in the

future. The group also keeps in contact and is involved with other DU chapters in Texas.

The interest group, officially established in March 1999, was first formed by Anthony]. (AJ) Alford, Arkansas '94, during the fall 1998 academic term. International Headquarters staff members then went to

University of Texas - Pan American Colony of Delta Upsilon, established September 9, 1999.

The colony is on schedule to be installed as a Delta Upsilon chapter in March of 2000. This is

Edinburg to further develop the interest group and assist the members through the process to become a colony and subsequently a chapter of Delta Upsilon.

The colony has made tremendous strides toward achieving chapter status. They currently hold the highest grade point average on campus, which is also well above the All Men's Average. The colony members have become involved in the

Carthage, Iowa, & Kansas State Chapters Adopt Alcohol-Free Housing Policies

Delta Upsilon is proud to announce that the Carthage, Iowa, and Kansas State Chapters have formally adopted the Fraternity's Alcohol-Free

Housing Policy. . The Fraternity's policy states that alcoholic beverages

shall be prohibited on the property and premises in which an undergraduate chapter of Delta Upsilon is housed whether owned, rented, or leased by that chapter, or any alumni organization affiliated with or related to that chapter.

. As a result of the implementation of this initiative, ! the chapters will receive grants from the International

conditional on achieving chapter installation requirements. Overall the colony is doing excellent at this time and all indications are that the members will be successful in the future.

Fraternity for immediate projects, including capital improvements and educational programs.

In addition to the grant funding, the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity will provide educational resources and services for the chapters. This will include expanded TIPS programming, added staffing resources from the International Headquarters, and communication with the chapters' alumni, ensuring they are supportive and understand the decision of the undergraduate members.

Fraternity President Jim McQuaid said, "The members of these chapters desire to enhance their organizations. They want to attract people of strong character and men who do not want the focus of their fraternity to be alcohol."

Congratulations to these undergraduate and alumni brothers who have taken a giant step toward their chapters' future.

T he Miami Chapter of Delta Upsilon led the way on their campus with academic

recognition based on chapter grade point averages above the All Men's GPA for Spring and Fall 1998. * Awards given to DU by Miami University were the Chapter Academic Excellence Award and the Dean's Achievement Award.

Purdue DU Chapter Wins Honorable Mention in Excellence Competition

T he Purdue Chapter of Delta Upsilon received a great honor. At the recent IFClPanhellenic "Chapter of Chapters," the Delta U Chapter was awarded Honorable Mention (runner-up) in the R. B. Stewart Fraternity Award of

Excellence competition. This award is the highest award that a Purdue University fraternity can receive. Applicants are judged on 11 operational areas.

Following their induction into the Order of Omega, Gregory A. Henkle '00 and Ryan N. Hatton '01 were chosen to serve the Order as secretary and treasurer respectively.

John A. Erdmann '01 was elected to complete the remainder of the term of the IFC's director of external relations.

Timothy D. Martin, Louisville '78, recently formed the law firm of Crafton, Martin, Ogburn & Zipperle, PLLC, located in Louisville, Kentucky. • One of Vermont's most historic figures, Justin S. Morrill, Middlebury 1860, was honored in July with a new 55-cent

postage stamp issued as part of the Great Americans series of stamps. The stamp was issued in July in Strafford, Vermont, birthplace of the former Congressman and U.S. Senator.

Brother Morrill was the chief proponent of the Land Grant Acts of 1862 and 1890 which provided for the endowment and support of the land grant colleges, the forerunners of many state universities.

The first bill was signed by President Abraham Lincoln and authorized the granting of public land to each state, the revenue from which had

to be used for supporting at least one college dedicated primarily to teaching agriculture and mechanical arts.

Millions of people have graduated from the 105 land grant colleges and universities spawned by his grand vision.

Morrill served in the House of Representatives for 12 years and in the Senate for 32 years.

C. M. Godfrey

C. Michael Godfrey, Texas '67, Senior Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel of FINA, Inc., was recognized with the 1999 Jurisprudence Award from the Anti-Defamation League. He was the 10th recipient of this award.

Brother Godfrey received the ADL's Jurisprudence Award for his devotion to the principles enshrined in the constitution and for symbolizing commitment to the democratic values which characterize our country.

R. Chamberlain

Richard P. Chamberlain, Washington '95, graduated with a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law in Seattle. He has begun a position with the Seattle law firm of Foster Pepper & Shefelman, PLLC.

Florida DUs in the news include Lake G. Ray III '79 and Randy D. Johnson '81. Remzey Samarrai, Florida '81, reports Brother Ray was elected to the Jacksonville City Council and that Brother Johnson was just appointed to several excellent state house committees .

• David W. Koch, Iowa '81, has joined the law firm of Wiley, Rein & Fielding in Washington, D.C., as a partner. Brother Koch was previously a partner at Rudnick, Wolfe, Epstein & Zeidman in Washington. His legal specialty is franchising and distribution.

• Charles M. Schrey, Miami '82, is Vice President of Transitions II of Mountain View, California. He received his MBA from Canisius College in 1991. Charles has been a database marketing consultant with Transitions II for the past year, managing client accounts in Silicon Valley. His responsibilities included designing and administering marketing databases and consulting on their use in marketing campaigns to customers and prospects.

Brother Schrey was also a contributor to Guy Kawasaki's latest book, Rules for Revolutionaries -The Capitalist Manifesto for Creating and Marketing New Products and Services.

A. Snyder

The Ohio State Board of Accountancy announced that Andrew T. Snyder, Miall1i '97, passed all four sections of the Certified Public Accounts

examination. Andrew is a Financial Information Systems Consultant for Computer Associates International in Cleveland.

Recently, he was the Canada Implementation Leader for the implementation of Release 11 .0 NCA of Oracle Financials Application for a $5 billion software and consulting services company. Brother Snyder also served as Team Leader for the implementation of the General Ledger Module for an international transportation, warehousing, and logistics firm.

• Russell L. Grundhauser, North Dakota '83, joined International Dairy Queen, Inc., headquartered in Minneapolis,

Vice President of Finance. The firm is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. and is engaged in the business of developing, licensing, and servicing a system of more than 6,000 Dairy Queen stores in the U.S . and internationally. Brother Grundhauser will be responsible for the financing, credit, leasing, and insurance divi sions.

Prior to joining IDQ, Russ was the Controller for the Minnesota regional office of AccuStaff and MindSharp Learning Centers. He holds a Bachelor 's degree from the University of North Dakota and is a Certified Public Account.

Brother Grundhauser is a former Treasurer of the International Fraternity, and served on the Delta Upsilon's traveling staff in 1983-84.

• We recently learned that Raymond G. Godshall, Jr. , Pennsylvania State '41, has had small roles in several movies, including CIOI), and Legends of the Fall.

His most recent part was in The Siege with Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, and Annette Benning.

asked me if I would like to play the role of Senator Ryan in his first movie, Special Bulletin , which was produced for television. I managed to remember my lines and not bump into the furniture, so I was given another chance: a line on CIOI),. This was an outstanding film which won several Oscars and gave me a chance to meet and talk with some major players such as Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman.

"Legends of the Fall was a real thrill because I spent a week on location with Sir Anthony Hopkins , a brilliant, classically trained actor, utterly without pretense. Legends was filmed on a spectacularly beautiful site near Calgary on the Bow River. The Indians who owned the ground stipulated that all buildings constructed for the set and evidence of the shoot be removed, and the entire area returned to its original state as it was sacred ground.

"The Siege , my most recent movie, marked the first time I was in a scene with all the principals: Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, and Annette Benning. It also marked a huge step in my career - two lines instead of one! "

Daughter Liberty Godshall is a script writer and guest star, having written for Thirty Something and was seen in an episode of that TV show for which she had also written the script. Son-in-law Edward Zwick recently received an Oscar for producing Shakespeare in Love.

• Earlier this year, Bl'Uce Reed Pullen, RlItgers '58, sent the Quarterly editors a copy of his book Discovering Celtic Christianity - Its Roots, Relationships, and Relevance.

Dr. Pullen is the pastor of Central Baptist Church in Westfield, Massachusetts. While on sabbatical, he

• In a ceremony complete with an artillery salute from the 105mm guns of the 94th Regional Support Command, Ronald D. Silverman, Wisconsin '69, Commander of the 804th Medical Brigade, was promoted to Brigadier General on July 10, 1999. As 94th RSC Commander Major General William Kiefer posted the order. Silverman's wife Miriam and father Max, a retired Army Reserve Colonel, pinned the stars on the new General's shoulders.

Brother Silverman is the first Dental Officer holding the rank of Brigadier General in the USAR to command a Medical Brigade. The General had just returned from EI Salvador where he led an inspection
