Dear RIMS member, The RISK Political Action Committee (PAC) is essential to ensuring RIMS political involvement and our legislative successes on Capitol Hill. The PAC allows RIMS and our members to have a direct impact on the issues and legislation that affect you. Giving to the RISK PAC ensures that someone is looking out for the interests of risk managers nationwide. As RISK PAC Trustees, we make carefully studied, well-informed decisions on whom to support, based upon a member’s voting record, Congressional Committee, and a history of being an overall champion for RIMS on Capitol Hill. RISK PAC has played a critical role in RIMS past legislative successes, including the reauthorization of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA), as well as passage of both the SMART ACT and the Policyholder Protection Act. As we look to 2017, a major issue will be the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). RISK PAC is the unified voice of risk managers and is essential to ensuring the program is reauthorized. Dear RIMS member,

The RISK Political Action Committee (PAC) is essential to ensuring RIMS political involvement and our legislative successes on Capitol Hill.

RISK PAC is the unifi ed voice of risk managers and is essential to ensuring the program is reauthorized. RISK PAC donations have helped us to get to this point, and we need your help to continue our successes.

I thank those who have made donations in the past; your contributions have gone a long way in advancing our efforts. If you have yet to contribute, please join your peers and contribute today!

Sincerely,

Robert Cartwright, Jr. Chair, RISK PAC Trustees

RISK PAC Reception for Congresswoman Marsha BlackburnImmediately following the Legislative Summit, RISK PAC sponsored a fund-raising reception for Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). Blackburn is the sponsor of the RIMS-supported Data Security and Breach Notification Act of 2015, which would set a national report-ing standard for breach notification.

RISK PAC in Action

Building relationships with lawmakers and their staff is the most important thing you can do as a person who wants to ensure that you are heard. Contrary to popular belief, members of Congress spend a majority of their time visiting their congressional districts. Surveys have found that the best strategy to influence an undecided lawmaker is direct contact by constituents.

Here are five basic strategies that will make you more influential than the most powerful lobbyists in Washington, DC.

1. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Learn about your legislators. Understand what committees the legislator sits on. What legislation did he/she introduce? Where did they attend college? Take note of any information that builds a connection to you or your issues.

2. COMMUNICATE FREQUENTLY. Find a key staff member either in the Washington, DC office or the district office who handles your issues, and STAY IN TOUCH! Send any new develop-ments about your issue and touch base every few months for updates.

3. HAVE A SPECIFIC ASK. Visit the rims.org web-site under “Advocacy” or contact RIMS staff to learn more about RIMS issues. Provide the member or staffer with any information they need to understand what it is you want them to either support or oppose. Remember to anticipate questions your legislator or the staff member could ask you and have the RIGHT answers.

4. PERSONALIZE ISSUES AND PROVIDE LOCAL CONTEXT. Speak about your issue in real-life terms. Explain how a law or regulation could affect you, your company, your colleagues, and your community.

5. ENGAGE VIA SOCIAL MEDIA. Over 80 percent of members of Congress have a social media account such as Facebook and Twitter. You can connect with Congress online to see which issues are most important to them and share your views.

Each year RIMS members take time out of their busy schedules to attend the RIMS Legislative Summit in Washington, DC, to meet with members of Congress and their staff. This year almost 40 RIMS members from 14 states met with more than 60 House and Senate offi ces to lobby for issues important to RIMS.

Below is a personal story from RIMS member Terence L. Milford who serves as the Director of Risk Management for Jack Cooper, based in Missouri.

The Kansas City RIMS Chapter chose me to attend this year’s RIMS Legislative Summit

in Washington, DC. This proved to be one of the greatest honors and highlights of my 27-year career in risk management. On June 6th and 7th I had the privilege of visiting our Nation’s Capitol and meet with many of our Representatives and their staff.

Since our Kansas City chapter represents both sides of the State Line – Kansas and Missouri - I had the opportunity to meet with members of Congress from both states.

While it was rewarding to speak with the staff of both Senators Moran and Roberts of Kansas-my home state, it was also great to meet the various staffers from Missouri, the state in which my com-pany is based and where I work. This allowed me to speak with the teams for both Senators McCaskill and Blunt from Missouri.

One of the highlights was getting to meet directly with Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer of the 3rd District of Missouri. Mr. Luetkemeyer confi rmed that he has plans to sponsor the NFIP legislation at some point in the future. The NFIP was just one of four issues that we were lobbying for as part of the RIMS Legislative Summit. In addition, he was also a sup-porter of two of the other three initiatives presented. Since the meeting, I have asked his offi ce to keep me informed of any progress that the congressman makes with sponsoring the legislation discussed.

If you care about the issues that affect risk manage-ment and would like to help RIMS develop stronger relationships on Capitol Hill, I encourage all RIMS members to attend the Legislative Summit. I now re-alize the benefi ts and plan to make this an annual trip!

“Each year I contribute to RISK PAC, and each year I am so glad I did. The PAC affords

me access to policy makers who shape our industry–access that would not be possible for me as an individual contributor in Washington. My contributions to RISK PAC provide me with

an “ROA,” a return on action. Contributing gives me a stake in the game and it encourages me to follow the issues and legislators in closer

detail. Professionally, RISK PAC allows me to go beyond my day-to-day role and connect with

professionals who are aspiring to guide the industry through effective legislative

change to find a better way.”
