2Disha Newsletter Quarterly (Jan. - March 2016)

Dear Readers,Greetings for the dayHope this Newsletter finds you in best of health? and spirits. The first quarter of the year has not shown any bright spots but still the mood is optimistic. Never-theless, optimism is a way

of life ; an attitude that always smoothens the tough times.Times have been tough and trying for all. Business seems to be badly hit and overall sentiment is low.I was amazed to hear a cycle repair shop owner too saying that busi-ness is down. This indicates overall slowdown and the basic perception that this is not the right time to spend or invest.Does it mean that we should fear the doomsday?India is facing this current turmoil due to more than one factors. The International markets are not doing well. The Modi Government is rapidly implementing new policies out of which some are populist and the others rational and aimed for National growth. The opposition seems to be opposing everything.? Most important of them all, India is suffering a lot due to the presence of several anti national elements within the country.Several states are going for polls and this affects the state of balance in the country.? The pre poll rhetoric does not help the common man.The media has yet to play a responsible role.Real estate is going through a negative phase and its decline has badly affected many investors. Some say that though the real estate markets are down now, there is less reason to worry as the ultimate goal is good for the society at large. It seems that the Government has created such a scenario, to devalue black money indirectly by lower-ing the marketing value of real estate. The Government is also work-ing hard to regularise the real estate sector as in equity markets.RBI has lowered loan rates and as a result brought in good news for the citizens. The railway is slated for significant growth ?at par with International standards. Air travel is also seeing significant growth.Development is happening across the country but overall the human development index is low.At the end of the day, the country is showing all signs of growth. Our readers will be surprised that India is very low on list of countries most preferred to do business with. Inspite of all this ,we must rememder that our country has achieved ,whatever we have in just 68 years of independence after about 100 years of British rule.Ghaziabad too falls among the last few cities of India on several lists.

There seems to be rapid devel-opment across the city of Ghaziabad ?and people are ea-gerly waiting for the un finished projects such as roads and flyovers to get completed such that inter city movement gets smoother. The metro line is being built fast and citizens hope that the trains will start rolling in by the next year end.On the Business front there is a need of improvement which helps fuelling business growth.Overall , the citizens of Ghaziabad are optimistic that there will be positive change soon.Disha urges the citizens of Ghaziabad to work towards the development of the Nation, the State of UP and their city of Ghaziabad by following best practices, keeping the city clean, being ethical, and doing their bit for social causes. In the same note Disha urges the Employees and Employers, Media personnel, Law enforce-ment authorities, Civic bodies of Ghaziabad? to follow ethical prac-tices and aid growth. We are pleased to announce a holiday resort tie up done by Disha management for the benefit of its esteemed readers. We sincerely hope that our readers use this facility for their holidays.Dear readers, we look forward to get your views, articles andother contributions such as jokes, pictures, and anecdotes to help us keep the newsletter alive and kicking. In case you are facing a problem or have a thought you would like to share with fellow readers please feel free to do so on this platform.Disha strives to provide a stronger value proposition to its esteemed readers and support of each ?is highly solicited.I end this note hoping and wishing that the citizens of Ghaziabad put in their best foot forward to make Ghaziabad a modelcity of India.

INTERACTIVE SESSION ON ‘VANPRASTHA’ ON 15TH MARCH AT ROTARY BHAWAN

GMA organized a lecture cum interactive session on how to celebrate and make ‘vanprastha’ stage of one’s life enjoyable and fulfilling. The session was held on Tuesday, 15th March 2016 at the Rotary Bhawan, Gandhi Nagar from 5.30 pm to 7 pm.

The speaker was Jivasu (Dr. Pradeep Kumar), teaching Naturality Meditation Programs in Canada and Rishikesh, India. He is facilitating mind-body medicine and acupuncture training courses for health professionals in McMaster University, Canada. He is in India and in this area for a brief period and we got the opportunity to get him for an interactive session for our members.

The talk focused on explaining that Vanprastha is the stage of exploration and adventure. It was then discussed how one should smoothly and con-sciously travel from the Grihashtha to Vanprastha stage of life.

The gist of the talk and interaction during the session is as under:

One of the most unique features of Indian philosophy is its ?division of life into four stages or ashrams- namely Dharma or duty, Kama or desires, Artha or wealth, and Moksha or liberation.

In the first stage of Brahamcharya, a student establishes a ?sense of self or identity;

The second stage of Grihastha or householder is one in ?which a person raises his family, earns a livelihood and finds his place in society. The self or identity matures through the experience of joys and sorrows of life;

The third stage is of Vanprastha or forest goer and is a mis-?nomer. It symbolizes the unknown or unexplored. The per-son looks beyond the known experience of family, expands the identity or self and becomes an explorer and adventurer. Unrealized dreams and desires are fulfilled and the prob-lems of diseases, old age, and death are contemplated. The person moves from being family person to being a social person by serving the underprivileged and helpless in the society, and eventually lives his life is soul consciousness.

During the final stage of Sanyasa or renunciation, the whole ?life of the person is integrated into a meaningful wholeness and the spiritual search is deepened to transcend the self or identity.

The third stage of Vanprastha is the most neglected stage and yet the most important stage because unless a person is conscious about it, he/she can continue in the Grihastha stage which can bring staleness, stagnation and strife, resulting in the decline of mind and body.

Vanprastha is truly the stage of exploration and adventure in order to bring new energy into life to keep the body active, the brain young, and the mind sharp. It’s the time to live a full inner and outer life with kindness and joy. Then only death can be embraced with equanimity.

In this talk, we discussed about how to make a transition from being a Grahisthi or householder to being a Vanprashti or explorer, and how to celebrate the life in its fullness each day.

GMA along with Association of Himalayan Yoga & Meditation Societies International (AHYMSIN*) organized a program on YOGA FOR JOYFUL LIVING - (A One-Day Retreat for CEOs & Senior Managers of GMA member organizations) on Sunday, 6th March 2016 at ABES Engineering College.

Yoga and meditation is a very effective tool to help a person remain calm and thereby live life joyfully. As we are getting busier by the day, we are getting more and more stressed and in our day to day life, we are seeing situations turn into problem and finally into a crisis. Only a calm mind can see situation as a situation and deal with it accordingly. This is all the more important for peo-ple heading organizations and departments who are required to deal with stressful situations, take important decisions affecting life of many others also, who are dependent on them.

This was the genesis of organizing the program. The team from Association of Himalayan Yoga & Meditation Societies Interna-tional (AHYMSIN*), Swami Ram Sadhak Gram Ashram, Rishikesh comprised of:

Dr. Manju Talekar, a medical graduate from Lady Hardinge Medical College and a trained pathologist;

Rabindra Sahu, a Registered Yoga Teacher and recipient of Sadhana Intensive certification from the International Sivananda Yoga & Vedanta Center.

Mr. Ram Prakash, an accomplished yoga and meditation teacher, certified by Association of Himalayan Yoga Societies Interna-tional (AHYMSIN) in Himalyan Yoga Tradition-Teacher’s Training Program. Currently, he is a resident teacher at SRSG engaged in guest teaching programs as well as conducting outreach programs.

The program was started by Dr. Manju Talekar, who described the scientific principles, behind proper postures, breathing etc. Its benefits to our health aspects of life. She explained how we get stressed and irritable easily because of wrong postures leading to our getting tired easily and sick.

Thereafter, Mr. Rabindra Sahu explained the correct style of breathing, standing, sitting etc. along with the principles of natural advantages of these postures. There was a practice session of these postures. This was followed by practical demonstration by Mr. Ram Prakash and a practice session of various yogasanas explaining benefits of each of these.

However, it was stated that imple-mentation of the infrastructure programs in the budget would be difficult in being implemented as it would need total support of the State Governments also. Industries had an opinion that though there are no benefits on taxation, provision for improving adminis-tration of taxes has been made.

The press conference was attended and covered by about 12 news papers.

11Disha Newsletter Quarterly (Jan. - March 2016)

The Chinese economy was once considered the second strongest economy of the world. And United States at the first position.

China gained this position through its focus on the manufacturing sector and producing goods at a large quantity and providing at

a cheaper price. The Economy of India is the seventh largest in the world by nominal GDP and the third largest by purchasing

power parity. India’s economy became the world’s fastest growing major economy from the last quarter of 2014, replacing the

People’s Republic of China. These strong economies of the world had hit the bottom before but the recent hit was observed on 24

August 2015, denoted as the Black Monday. Black Monday is a term used to refer to certain events which occurred on Monday.

And such a Black Monday occurred on 23 august 2015. The Chinese stock market crash began on 12 June 2015. And with the

crash of the Chinese stock market, the shanghai main share index lost 8.49% of its value on 24 august 2015, hence labelling the

day the black Monday. China has been a major contributor to economic growth and low global inflation for more than two de-

cades. But from last few years it was assessed that soon china will experience the worst nightmare. The slowdown in their econ-

omy was because of the reduced demand for their manufactured products in Japan and South Korea. As the manufacturing con-

tributes 59% to the Chinese GDP, and all of it is for export, the manufacturing index of china has been underperforming from last

two quarters. As china is the world largest exporter so in order to maintain the fiscal deficit it had to depreciate its currency in order

to gain on exports. Another reason was devaluation of Yuan (Chinese currency). From the last two decades Chinese Yuan has

appreciated around 33% against the dollar and it was the first time that Chinese currency has depreciated so much within a week

duration due to which there was a panic around the world, as china is the second largest economy in the world. On 24, August

2015, the day finally arrived; china faced its worst nightmare, and suffered massive financial losses causing trillions of dollars to

be wiped from global stock markets. China stocks suffered their steepest fall in one day with shanghai’s main share index closing

down at 8.49% which brought down a global slowdown. As a part of the 2015 Chinese stock market crashed over 7/5 was lost on

Tuesday 25, august and another 1.275 on Wednesday 26, August, leaving the shanghai composite down over 16% on the week

despite another futile interest rate cut and significant monetary easing by the central bank. As a result billions of Yuan were lost

on global stock market.

With the hit on Chinese stock market the entire world suffered from America, Europe to India the impact was so huge that the en-

tire stock market demolished. The impact on USA stock market was that the entire stock market was that the Dow dropped 1000

points at the opening, the second largest drop ever, as the Dow Jones Industrial average had fallen over concerns about the

Yuan, low gas prices and uncertainty over the U.S Federal Reserve moves to raise interest rates.

The European stock, market faced their worst trading day since 2011. In London almost 74 billion pounds was wiped off the value

of the FTSE 100 index, in a rout led by mining giants. The impact of the black Monday was also huge on India. The sensex

crashed 1625 points (6%) to 25,742 a one year low level, its biggest single day loss from close to close. Even nifty also crashed

400 points to below 7900. All the 30 sensex and 50 Nifty stocks ended in red. The slowdown in value of Yuan has badly affected

India’s cotton and textile export.

Indian currency i.e., the rupee has always been up and down and most often the value is depreciating. The last when the value of

Indian currency had a depressing fall was in the year 2013 , before Raghuram Rajan was appointed as governor of RBI and since

after that it was 24 August 2015, when Indian rupee hit two year low against the US dollar, rupee weakened 82 paisa low of

66.65/$. The loss borne by the investors in India due to black Monday was something which was never observed before in the

history of India’s stock market. The investor wealth was crashed by over Rs. 7 lakh crore in the biggest ever single day loss.

Once upon a time there was a giant beehive. It was located on an ancient tree, situated amidst meadows and gardens filled with bright and colourful flowers. The beehive had a queen bee, who along with some senior bees, had been chosen to run the hive. Collectively, the elected were called the Government. Worker bees entrusted the Government bees to store their honey and keep them safe. The Government also had to discover new gardens, to provide new sources of flowers and nectar for the new generation of baby bees.To ensure stability and avoid chaos, the Government bees made rules and passed laws. The worker bees had to follow them, else they could be punished. This was parti-cularly important because the beehive had different kinds of bees, who could end up fighting with each other. The black bees and the brown bees for instance, were the two main kinds. They essentially did the same work. However, they had slightly different looks and practiced their own prayer habits. In good times, it was the perfect beehive. Over time, however, things changed. Government bees had their own kids, relatives and friends. Most could not join the Government. They had to become worker bees like everyone else. However, one day, a se-nior Government bee’s son told his father being a worker bee was too much work. “Why not let me take a bit of honey from our reserves?” he said to his father. “But that would be wrong,” the father bee said.“Nobody would find out. What happens in the Government, stays in the Government,” replied the Government bee’s son. He was right. Worker bees trusted the Government more than they did themselves. A bit of honey lost would not be noticed at all.And then it started. Slowly, all Government bees’ children, cousins, relatives, friends and well-wishers started stealing a bit of honey everyday from the reserves. They didn’t have to slave in the gardens all day anymore. The worker bees did notice the honey levels were not going up as expected. When some worker bees pointed this out, the Government just ordered everyone “to work harder and not be lazy”.The worker bees worked harder to make more honey. However, honey levels refused to rise. In fact, they started to fall.Soon, Government bees started another practice. Whenever they found a new garden, they gave it to their children, friends and relatives first. “What the worker bees don’t know, the worker bees don’t miss,” was the hushed conversation in Government cir-cles. Over time, not only did honey levels fall, the discovery of new gardens stopped for the kids of worker bees. They remained idle and hungry. Sometimes, the queen bee tossed some scraps at the worker bees, and everyone praised the queen. However, the scraps were not enough.“Who is stealing the honey?” one day, an influential worker bee finally said. The Government noticed the influential protesting bee was black. So, the Government said, “The brown bees are doing it.” Then, the Government called the brown bees, and told them, “We think the black bees are stealing all your hard work.”Hungry and tired, the black and brown bees were filled with anger. They fought with each other. The Government bees enjoyed the distraction and continued to steal. As brown and black bees died and suffered, the Government tossed some more honey scraps. Worker bees praised the queen again.Soon, there was a drought. The flowers became few, and it was time to turn to the honey reserved over all these years. However, to everyone’s shock, there was no honey in the reserves at all. Worker bees, nor-mally trusting of the Government, went to check in the Government bees’ and their relatives’ homes. They found everyone fat and sitting on their own private reserves of honey. What’s more, they also found maps of hundreds of new gar-dens that were discovered but never shared with the worker bees.Dismayed and shocked, the worker bees came back to their poor homes. The brown and black bees looked into each other’s eyes. They realised they had been fooled. They hugged each other and apologised for all the hurt they had caused each other.“We will teach them a lesson,” the black and brown bees said in unison. The worker bees realised the time had come to use their sting, not against each other, but against those who had cheated them.Meanwhile, the queen bee sensed the tension. She presented her beautiful young son, “He will save you now. Like i did all these years.”However, the brown and black bees were too smart this time. They gathered to-gether in a swarm and unleashed their stings on the Government and their fat cronies. The Government bees barely had any time to collect their belongings. They simply had to run away from the hive. Soon, they were all gone. The brown and black bees decided to select their best people to be in charge. Also, they decided to never blindly trust, but monitor everyone. The hive recov-ered, and the new generation worked hard to restore the honey stores. New gar-dens led to new prosperity, and the beehive became the most successful beehive in the world.A few years later, an old bee, talking to her grandson at night, said “Did you know we had a queen bee at one time?” “Yes. But we don’t anymore. Because deep down, there’s a little king in all of us,” replied the baby bee.

Tropical Islands Resort is an artificial tropical resort located about 60 kilometers south of Berlin and is housed within the largest free-standing dome in the world. This massive airplane-hanger-like structure is 360 meters long, 210 meters wide, 107 meters high, and is supported by 14,000 tons of steel. It is large enough to host 8 entire soccer fields. Even the New York Statue of Liberty (93 meters) could stand upright in it, and the Paris Eiffel Tower (322 meters) could lie in it. The Dome offers enough space for the skyline of Berlin's Potsdamer Platz including the Sony Centre, the gatehouse and the Daimler Chrysler skyscraper.
