Meet Emmett Brown Dedicated Festival Patron

E mmett Brown of South Pasadena, California has been one of ourmost dedicated patrons for five decades. He donates annually toour jazz education programs, and is a member of Monterey Jazz

Festival's Jazz Legacy Circle. A lifelong fan of jazz, Emmett was seven years old when he was

asking his mom to buy him jazz records. Charlie Parker was one of his earlyfavorites, and Emmett evenbriefly played the saxophone asa teenager. Emmett moved fromHouston to Los Angeles at 16,and graduated from Manual ArtsHigh School. He served in theNavy during the Korean War andwas stationed in Hawaii. Aftercompleting his tour of duty, heearned a degree in architectureand later became a civil engineer.

In 1963, a colleagueat work suggested that Emmettattend the Monterey JazzFestival—a tradition that laststo this day. When asked to recallsome extraordinary perform-ances, Emmett replied that “JanisJoplin, the singer for Big Brotherand the Holding Company, wasremarkable, and I will always remember Sly and the Family Stone in 1969.”His all-time favorite artists include Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, OscarPeterson, Big Mama Thornton, Sly and the Family Stone, and Charles Lloyd.

For many years, Emmett and as many as 20 of his friends wouldcaravan from Los Angeles to Monterey. For the last 25 years, his steadydate has been his wife, Pat, an author. They both enjoy the serene beautyof the Pacific Coast, the Festival’s knowledgeable audience, and itsconsistently diverse and edgy programming.

Emmett and his friends would hear jazz at Los Angeles clubslike Shelly's Manne-Hole (where drummer Shelly Manne was part owner),Jax Bar & Grill, and later, at the Catalina Bar & Grill, where Emmett metsaxophonist Charles Lloyd. They hit it off and developed a lasting friend-ship. Emmett will celebrate Charles Lloyd, the Festival’s 2014 ShowcaseArtist, as the honoree at the Festival's 8th Annual Jazz Legends Gala on

Thursday, September 18. The event is a fundraiserfor MJF's jazz education programs and includesmusic performances, a silent auction, and dinner.

Emmett enjoys giving back to the commu-nity, and to organizations that do good work. Afterreceiving assistance from the Fair Housing Authority,Emmett voluntarily served on their board for adecade. Recognizing the impact that Monterey JazzFestival’s education programs have, Emmett startedmaking donations and is a member of the JazzLegacy Circle, a group of generous patrons who haveincluded the Festival in their estate plans. We hopeyou will join Emmett this September at his 51stconsecutive Monterey Jazz Festival.

If you would like more information on howto join Emmett as an annual donor, as a member ofthe Jazz Legacy Circle, or at the Jazz Legends Galaon September 18, please contact Andrew T.
