and publishing capabilitiesto include not only print,but Web and digital.

“When the iPad came ontothe market, Louis Vuittonsaw a strategic opportunityto pursue its policy of inno-vation in the digital pub-lishing sphere,” sums upJérôme Guillement, Mobileand Publishing InnovationProject Manager within thebrand’s IT division. “Theidea of transforming ourprinted newsletter into adigital edition has alwaysbeen on the agenda, bothfor financial reasons as wellas to increase circulation.”When Apple’s tabletarrived, it completely revi-talised Louis Vuitton’sapproach. Its digital pub-lishing strategy no longerincluded just the internal newsletter in Web format but itneeded to be available on the iPad as well. At the sametime, the leather goods manufacturer began to considerhow it could extend digital publishing to additional com-munications and content.

App Studio and Quark Publishing Platform: TheTriggers“When we were able to test the first App Studio, werealised that it corresponded perfectly to our needs,”explains Guillement. “We needed a solution that wouldallow for iPad access not only to the internal newsletterbut also to almost all of our internal documentation, suchas the brochures and catalogues we produce every day.Furthermore, the ability to enrich content with the Quarkdigital publishing solution opened the way to new creativechannels.”

The skills the Louis Vuitton teams already had with Quarksolutions was one of the key factors in the brand’s commit-ment to develop a digital strategy based on QuarkPublishing Platform. “We were very satisfied with what

Quark was offering in terms of digital publishing and didnot want to turn towards an alternative solution which, inany case, would not have offered us the same level ofquality and innovation,” says Guillement.

The teams responsible for mobile and publishing innova-tion appreciated the high level of customisation in thesolution which made integration with existing applicationseasy. This was a critical point for Louis Vuitton in order tokeep full control over the brand and brand guidelines. Inless than 8 weeks, a functional pilot was implemented,tested and then put into production. The pilot was man-aged entirely by the internal graphics studio, which is ableto enrich documents in a fully transparent and optimisedmanner.

Louis Vuitton App: Innovation Serving EleganceToday, the Louis Vuitton app includes three documenttypes: PDFs, interactive publications (with video,slideshows, Web sites, specific read modes) and videos. Itconsists of a kiosk, which is used to navigate through theQuark Publishing Platform tree structure to select and

download the desired publications before viewing themon the iPad. The app also includes a library for previouslydownloaded documents (which can be read in off-linemode).

“When you visit the kiosk,” explains the Louis Vuitton proj-ect manager, “you can see the 20 most recent documentsavailable with two status options: “Update” indicates thata current document previously downloaded by the userhas been updated, and “New” for publications less thanthree weeks old. We have also set up a dynamic searchsystem, by keywords, description, and file name as well asa dynamic table of contents to make search more effec-tive. Finally, a public mode is also available which, later,will enable us to offer our clients access to a certain num-ber of documents at sales sites.”

The app also includes publications with rich content, suchas videos, automatic slideshows, and sound — all availablein both vertical and horizontal versions.

manage peripherals and apps but not the digital contentdisseminated in apps. Louis Vuitton has mastered thesecapabilities and now draws the full benefits of a high qual-ity, enriched app that adheres to the brand’s values.”

2013: HTML5 and iPhoneFollowing the success of the app developed using QuarkPublishing Platform, Louis Vuitton aims to extend its digitalpublishing strategy. Several projects will likely be initiatedduring 2013. “The first will be an iPhone version of theapp, including mementos and publications containing allproducts available in the current collection, as well as anew version of the app utilising HTML5. There will also bea new desktop browser-based app for non-tablet andsmartphone users.

Furthermore, Louis Vuitton will implement a second instal-lation of Quark Publishing Platform in Asia. “Our second
