ORANGERY ROOF KIT: TECHNICAL MANUAL

Quantal’s all new Orangery Roof Kit is a unique product designed to make

installing an Orangery quick and simple whilst still enabling you to install a

roof which offers superb performance.

The complete Orangery kit has been

designed to compliment the BBA approved

Quantal roof system and is based upon pre-

constructed, bespoke sized modular

cassettes which enable simple and speedy

onsite assembly.

KEY FACTS

• BBA Certified Timber Beams.

• High performance pre-cut insulation panels and thermally broken fixings.

• High quality Vapour Control Layer.

• Simple 4-part modular design for speedy onsite assembly.

• Structurally guaranteed by Quantal.

VERSA-LAM BEAMS: BBA APPROVED

The VERSA-LAM® beam is a laminated veneer product made from Southern Yellow

Pine veneers, bonded together with waterproof structural adhesives and having a

parallel running grain and as such can be considered to be solid timber members

with holes and notches being formed in accordance with the guidelines given in

the Building Regulations approval document “Timber Intermediate Floors and

Dwellings” Clause 2.5. It is the high compressive stresses perpendicular to the grain

that makes it ideal for use as the principal load carrying beam in this timber roof

engineering application.

The beams are approved for use in the UK by the British Board of Agrément, as

well as receiving recognition form the NHBC and Zürich and are manufactured

under a factory production control system with full compliance to the UKTFA Code

of Practice to ensure the highest standards of design and audited on a monthly

basis by a third-party inspection agency.

The beams are manufactured and supplied in billets typically up to 6m long

available in thicknesses of 38, 45, 89, 133 and 178mm, and in depths of 241mm or

302mm.

The beams will arrive on-site with a moisture content of 8% to 10%. In a Service

Class 1 environment (as defined in BS5268-2:2002), it will attain an equilibrium

moisture content of 10%, whilst in a Service Class 2 environments, it will reach a

final equilibrium moisture content of 12% to 14%.

They are untreated with a natural durability sufficient to ensure a minimum design

life of 60 years when protected by a layer of sheathing and breather membrane

and not subject to mechanical damage or insect attack. Preservative treatment

should not be undertaken without consulting Quantal Technical as this may affect

the structural integrity of the product.

For the purpose of calculating fire resistance of the beam members, a charring rate

of 0.66mm per minute should be used.

BCI-JOISTS

The Joists used in this product are an accepted building material within the

construction industry when designed in accordance to BS5268-2, receiving

recognition from the British Board of Agrément and BM TRADA, as well as full

compliance with the UKTFA Code of Practice to ensure the highest standards of

design.

Further compliance is given to all current and forthcoming environmental

legislation and International Environmental Accreditation adds as a framework for

guaranteeing sustainable timber supplies are used.

The joists are untreated but when used in Service Class 1 or 2 conditions (as

defined in BS5368-2:2002), they may be taken to have a service life comparable to

that of natural timber.

The acoustic specifications of the joists comply with Building Regulations for

Resistance of the Passage of Sound (Part E) (provided appropriate detailing is used)

up to 40dB.

VAPOUR CONTROL LAYER: DPM

The Damp Proof Membrane is a high quality polyethylene Vapour Control Layer

produced to PIFA Standard 6/83A:1995 and complying with the relevant Building

Regulations when used in conjunction with our specified Joining System, to ensure

complete integrity of joins.

The product is a high puncture resistant material and can be classified as non-

hazardous when used in accordance with the relevant Codes of Practice (CP102

1973) and PIFA Certificate Number 1995/10. It is chemically inert and therefore not

affected by acids or alkalis that may be present in the surrounding environment.

WARM ROOF DESIGN: INSULATION

The insulation is CFC/HCFC free and has Zero Ozone Depletion Potential and a fire

rating when tested to BS476 Part 3: 1968 “External Fire Exposure Roof Test”

dependent on the waterproofing system specified but will typically achieve FAB

rating.

It is laid with a constant gradient of 1 in 80 away from the main house structure to

ensure that no rainfall ponds.

The High performance insulation panels form part of the modular cassettes and

these, along with the thermally broken fixings, allow a u-value of 0.2 to be achieved

through the wooden roof structure. This effectively removes the need for through

ventilation, which can be a difficult to achieve in an orangery roof.

4-PART MODULAR DESIGN: 3-STAGE CONSTRUCTION

1. The 4 modular cassettes are manufactured to your bespoke requirements;

complete with all the previously mentioned layers, including a 150mm minimum

up-stand on the glazing edge to eliminate splash back, and delivered ready to

install.

2. The modular design allows quick and easy on site assembly.

3. Once installation is complete any suitable waterproof covering

material can be applied to weatherproof the complete roof

system.

CASSETTE ARRANGEMENT AND TYPES

The standard perimeter and corner support arrangement recommended by

Quantal for the modular cassettes is either face fixed to the house wall or edge

supported in the house wall and as such the respective cassette types will be used.

For non-standard arrangements, consultation with the structural engineer is

required and an alternative design may be compiled.
