June 10, Assistance League of Huntington Beach awarded scholarships to 13 El Viento graduates. The 14th one (pictured with Marilyn Cavener) did not receive a scholarship because she’ll be going into the U.S. Marines.

President’s MessageThank you to the installation team of Lynne Wilhelm, Norma Toohey and Nora Greenwood. It was just “what the doctor ordered” to get Assistance League of Huntington Beach 2016-2017 year off to a fun-filled stellar year. It was so much fun and a perfect beginning.

We want our busy and hard work to be fun.

DreamCatchers

DreamCatchers’ next meeting is 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday, August 10 at the new Senior Center.

I’m not sure what the DreamCatchers’ Membership were thinking, even with a few asking for an impeachment…however, I am back as leader of the pack for one more year. We have a very strong, dynamic Board with three newer members joining us for 2016-17.

“WOW,” is all I can say to Pat Wolff and her terrific committee for planning our knockout Installation Dinner Wednesday evening, June 15, at Mile Square Park. We had beautiful flowers from members’ gardens – which included the very aromatic orange Whiskey Rose from Ann Harvey’s garden, adorable favors, and a beautifully designed program by Marsha Ryder.

Our “special big sister” Susan Bjork joined us for dinner. When Susan spike about what Chapter, DreamCatchers, and Assisteens have done throughout 2015-16 and hearing the numbers, I got chills. We all should be very proud of what we do for each other and, particularly, our communities. I invited Ami Racin to take pictures of our evening and Diane Dwyer joined us to show the 65th Assistance League of Huntington Beach video that Matt put together. He does such great work, and the video captures what Assistance League of Huntington Beach is all about.

Other than a few technical difficulties--I think wine had a factor for the issues--our Installation Dinner was sensational. The slideshow and video Diane brought to show was working at 5 p.m.--however, some phantom happened to the laptop(s) when it was time to actually

show slides and video. Christine, Cindy, and Diane were frantically trying to get everything up and working. The problem added to the levity in the room.

I was pleased to announce our 2015-16 honoree of Making a Difference award to Ann Harvey. Ann was formerly a Chapter member. In 1993, she and several other women got together to form an auxiliary for working women. Their dedication and vision came to fruition and DreamCatchers was chartered in 1994. Ann has been our Resource Development Chairman the past three years and has hardly missed any of DreamCatchers’ Saturdays in the Thrift Shop. Within the last year, she has become very involved with Bottom of Bin and is now permanent leader of the day for Bottom of Bin on the 4th Monday of each month. Congratulations, Ann!

Reminder to DreamCatchers—we are DARK in July. Our next regular meeting is August 10 and will be held at the new Senior Center. Thanks to Martha Nishida for setting this up for us. More details on the August 10 meeting will be forthcoming. a

Achievement MachineImagine for a moment that you can log onto Amazon and purchase an achievement machine for our chapter. How would such a device work?

First you would need to supply it with a clear, specific, detailed description and images of what you wanted it to achieve. After all, you wouldn’t want your machine to engage in work that had no meaning. Next, you would need to provide your achievement machine with plenty of good quality fuel so it could do its work. You would also have to keep it properly maintained, so it would stay in top working condition. And in return, your amazing achievement machine would use its considerable power and flexibility to provide our chapter with the things desired. As long as you were clear about what you wanted and supplied your achievement machine with care and nourishment, it would preform truly amazing feats. Amazon does not sell achievement machines. But, the good news is that our chapter does not need one. You already are a spectacularly effective achievement machine. Your knowledge, skills, abilities, interests and commitment to the chapter values, thrift shop and mission is an awesome achievement machine. When you link your machine together with other members’ machines so you are working corporately toward common goals, success and achievement are assured.

The proof is in the numbers For 2015-2016, together you gave more than 68,662 volunteer hours to net more than $200,000. at Treasures by the Sea and sell more than $600,000. of merchandise at our Thrift Shop and Corner Boutique. And your caring and commitment positively impacted the lives of 15,971 children and adults:

• 2,524 students were clothed through Operation School Bell

• More than 7,600 students’ lives were enriched through Links to Learning, Teachers Assistance Program and El Viento

• 1,896 adults and children hugged a bear and found comfort

• More than 1,200 young adults and seniors knew someone cared because of Operation New Beginnings, Alzheimer Family Service Center, Support our Seniors and Operation Self Esteem

• 63 children enjoyed celebrating their birthday thanks to Birthday in a Bag

These numbers will build and fuel confidence. Confidence encourages your achievement machine to again succeed. Whatever your achievement machine does again and again turns into a habit. Positive habits have a profound effect on the chapter and the community. And once again, you and our chapter will make a big difference. You are amazingly awesome ladies! a

Membership Currently we have 167 Active Members, but with summer vacations, surgeries, and illnesses it would be VERY helpful if Associates and Sustaining Members step up and sign

up to work in the Thrift Shop. Just a half day would be a great help. The Thrift Shop is air conditioned! Come enjoy the coolness!

Our next Informational Coffee is on September 22 at 10:00 a.m. If you have a friend or neighbor who would be a perfect candidate to join us, send their name and Email address to Debbie Payne.

National Assistance League Annual ConferenceIt’s time for the National Assistance League Annual Conference. This year we are travelling to Dallas Texas. The Conference is September 14-18, 2016 and we will be staying at the Anatole Hilton.

The theme of this year’s conference is “The Power of Change-Navigating Change and Driving Growth.”

There are direct flights to Dallas Love field on Southwest airlines leaving out of John Wayne airport.

I am flying in on Tuesday September 13 on a Southwest 8:00 a.m. flight.

Time is running out for early bird registration. The early bird fee is $475 and ends June 30, at which time registration is still open but the price will increase. Our chapter has budgeted for Conference early bird registration reimbursement – the reimbursement amount will be based on the number of conference attendees.
