Quality Coaching at It’s Finest: 18 Lessons from USA Surfing’s Joey Buran

to Bring in the New Year By Nadine Dubina,

USOC Coach Development Over the past few years, I have come to recognize the importance of reflection as a way to celebrate the strengths and successes that I have experienced as well as draw out the lessons from my failures and misfortunes. Now that 2017 has drawn to a close, I think it is especially important to look back at the journey of the past year, and to highlight the moments that stand out the most. One of these moments from 2017 doesn’t have to do specifically with my journey, but of one that was shared with me, from a fellow coach. This coach not only exemplifies our definition of quality coaching, but he brings our recently published Quality Coaching Framework (2017) to life. This coach is USA Surfing’s Joey Buran.

Are Your Cleans Doing What They Are Supposed To Do?

By: Leo Totten, MS Totten Training Systems, LLC USAW Sr. International Coach

Whether your sport is powerlifting, strongman, football or any other “strength” sport, the Power Clean should be part of your workout plan. Obviously, the major emphasis of your training should be whatever discipline you are participating in, but including power cleans at the right time can enhance the performance in any strength sport. When choosing the exercises to be put into your program, there are two primary considerations to keep in mind.

1. Does the exercise fit a need or purpose? 2. Are the athletes able to perform the exercise

correctly so it actually accomplishes what it is supposed to do?

Power cleans can be a great addition to your arsenal of exercises in your program, but only if done correctly to get the full benefit.

Winning After Winning: How to Approach the Season After A Championship

By Dr. Wade Gilbert, Human Kinetics Coaching Education Center

The long hours, countless sacrifices and dedication to intense training has paid off – your athletes have finally secured that elusive championship. As much as you try to avoid it, almost immediately talk turns to securing back-to-back titles.

Chasing a title keeps athletes hungry and focused. But when a team becomes champion the chase is over, and suddenly it is now being chased. That can make the season following a championship very stressful for athletes and coaches alike. And, as a result, title-winning teams find it very hard to regain anything resembling championship form.

To you and to the many coaches who have sought my advice after winning a title, I offer these informed suggestions.

1. Dont try to repeat or defend a title. 2. Focus on strengths first, weaknesses and gaps

second. 3. Maintain a consistent approach to improving,

not proving ability. 4. Focus on the experience, not the title you are seeking.

To read more in depth about each suggestion listed

above, follow the link to the full article here.

CBD in 2018: Four Questions Answered

The prohibited status of cannabidiol (CBD) is changing in 2018, but all other cannabinoids are still prohibited in-competition, including THC, which means there are still risks for athletes when it comes to CBD products. Click here for answers to some of the top questions about CBD in 2018.

Trio of the Month & Interesting Articles

Sport and Organization Dynamics Richard Wolfe, PhD

Executive Education; Ross School of Business

All sport teams seek a performance "edge." To achieve this edge, data analytics and sport science have, very appropriately, been adopted. However, analytics and sport science have become so commonplace as to have lost their edge contributing to competitive parity—not competitive advantage. What, then, will the next “big thing” be, that will contribute to achieving a competitive edge in sport? We argue that it is organizational dynamics. The Ross School will be holding the first ever conference addressing how sport can benefit from practices which have proven to lead to success in the world of business. In our effort to insure that the topics we ad-dress in the Sport and Organization Dynamics conference are relevant to sport, we have recruited an excellent Board of Advisors—composed of leaders responsible for performance in college sport, the Olympics, and in each of the North American major leagues.
