Literacy National Qualification

Literacy is a skill you need to express yourself and communicate with other people – something we want to do as well as we can!In this unit, you’ll show how you can use techniques that make your ways of doing this work for you

Page 2: Qualification specification

What is this Literacy unit about? It’s about using reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in situations in your personal life, at work and in education. Your success in literacy will help you to discover meanings, knowledge and feelings – and feed your imagination!

If there are any words you don’t understand in this unit, your tutor will explainthem to you.

What will I be doing?

You will be reading texts and working out what they mean. You’ll be writing and choosing the best ways to get across what you want to say. You’ll be listening and speaking too in ways that get your points across clearly and that other people can understand easily. All in all, you’ll be using and choosing ways to use language brilliantly!

Some activities might involve you doing two or more of these together – like taking part in a discussion where you are speaking and listening or

writing about something you’ve read like replying to an e mail.

Thinking about why….?

Here are some reasons – what about yours? What do you want to work at most?

Unit L/MT/0001 Literacy

Did you know that….

The first English dictionary was written by Robert Cawdrey & published in1604? and The first Scottish Gaelic dictionary written by Alexander McBain was published in 1896?

To understand things in text books and on the web

To leave notes that folk can understand

To express my feelings without annoying people

To write up really professional reports

To follow what other people are saying

Yours?

How will I show what I’ve been able to do?

The most straightforward way is to keep all your work in an e portfolio ( an electronic folder) so that you and your tutors can decide what your most successful work is.

These won’t be things you do only once – you’ll be able to show just how well you can do in at least three different contexts. You’ll be able to use them in many others!

When you want to show off the speaking and listening, your tutors will watch you ( and listen to you!) and make an assessment of how well you’ve done.

You might want to show how well you can explain how to do something to other people – something that is technical and uses specialist language that is hard to follow without you doing it expertly!

What if I’m better at one thing than another ?Most people are! You can excel in even one area and this triumph will show up separately on your Literacy profile.

Thinking about……What are you particularly good at?...

What might you want to get even better at?......

H O TT I Pwhen using a spel check, look over the words again. It could have missed something or used an American spellng.

Write what should not be forgotten…

What will I achieve and how will I be assessed?

Assessment: this word

comes from the French ‘s’assoir’ meaning ‘to sit beside’.

To celebrate what you’ve done, you will get a National Qualification in Literacy at SCQF level 3, 4 or 5! This will give an overall result when all the skills(components) have been met.

You will also get these recorded as individual componentson your Literacy profile and, if appropriate, as part of your S3 Statement.

Your tutors will assess your speaking and listening and these results will be externally verified. Your reading and writing in your portfolio will be externally assessed.

The different levels are shown in the table below so you will know how well you are doing and also what to aim for.

Thinking about ……Where do I go with this from here? How can I make it work in my personal life?

Where will you find what I’ve done? This is for your tutors and any external assessors to look at your work and make their professional judgement about it using the national standards. You have a copy of them in the table on page 3.

Put in link to your portfolio pages where you’ve stored your work or attach any paper copies you want to show
