Case question in brief

Tango Health and Beauty Limited (‘Tango’) has experienced exceptionally strong growth in the eighteen years since it was founded as a single beauty clinic in Hong Kong. It now has a listing on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and provides a range of health and beauty services. Its beauty clinics provide advanced treatments to clients, and the company also operates a number of spas, massage centres and slimming and fitness centres not only in Hong Kong, but also in Singapore and Mainland China.

The business in Singapore was established nine years ago by means of a takeover of a local company, Perfect Beauty. The business in Mainland China was established as a start-up business five years ago.

Two years ago, Tango opened a chain of retail outlets selling beauty and skincare products, most of them sourced from France. These are advertised as ‘scientifically proven, and with natural ingredients’. There has been very strong growth in retail sales during the past two years. In addition, the retail sales division is now the supplier of these products to the beauty centres, spas, massage centres and slimming and fitness centres, acting as the centralised purchaser of products for the entire group.

Testimonials from the professionals and participant

Mr. Clement ChanPresident, Hong Kong Institute of CPAsManaging Director, BDO Limited

I was so impressed with the professionalism and maturity demonstrated by all of the participants in the QP Case Analysis Competition last year. It certainly passed my expectation by far with the quality of the presentations and some of its innovative style. All of the participating teams showed immense talent in not just able to understand and analyse the case properly, but a lot of creative thoughts gone into presentations and recommendations. I really enjoyed that experience and look forward to yet another successful year of the competition in 2014.

The 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up teams showcased their well coordinated team work and presentation skills during the competition.

“We believe that our diversity in accounting and marketing allowed us to think from various angles to come up with the best solutions, this perfect match brings us to the success in the competition. We enhanced not only our financial analysis skills, but also our strategic planning skills and technical knowledge from other disciplines. The process was challenging, it stimulated us in conducting constructive arguments and understand the mechanism of effective communications among the team. We will recommend other students to enter the contest, as it is part of the nurturing of local CPAs and it provides a valuable chance for students to get a taste of what it was like to work in the business world,”

said team leader, Karl Chan, from The University of Hong Kong.
