INTRODUCTION[INTRODUCTION TO THE CHEMICAL RESISTANCE OF QUADRANT EPP’S STOCK SHAPES

Dear reader,In this brochure we present you with an extensive list ofchemical resistance data for the Quadrant “GeneralPurpose and Advanced Engineering PlasticProducts”. This information will without doubt be ahelpful tool when selecting the most suitable plasticsmaterial for your application.
In Table I you will find four hundred of the mostcommonly used chemical products, which are listed atdifferent concentrations and temperatures. Even if thechemical you are dealing with is not figuring in Table I,further tables are included to allow you to get an ideaabout the resistance of the plastic materials against thischemical after all.
Many chemicals are known under different names.Besides the most commonly used names you will alsofind the less used synonyms in table IV.
Temperature, time of exposure, concentration of thereagents and stress level in the plastic parts allconsiderably effect the chemical resistance andconsequently your material choice.
For example PC 1000, PEI 1000, PSU 1000 and PPSU1000, because of their amorphous chemical structure,are sensitive to “stress cracking” when in contact withpolar organic solvents. Environments, which arecompletely harmless to unstressed parts, may causestress cracking when in contact with stressed parts (e.g.isopropyl alcohol in contact with PSU 1000). Not onlythe externally applied load is of importance but also theinternal stress level plays a big role. Although QuadrantEngineering Plastic Products (Quadrant EPP) stockshapes are annealed using a proprietary stress-relievingcycle to minimise any internal stresses resulting from themanufacturing process, some stresses may remain andnew ones may be induced during machining. Therefore,in certain cases thermal treatment (stress relieving) ofthe plastic parts during or after machining may benecessary in order to keep the internal stress level andthus the risk on cracking as low as possible.
It is important to note that this data is only of anindicative nature, derived from all sorts of literaturerelated to the chemical resistance of plastics.Therefore, in practice it is strongly recommendedcarrying out tests on a prototype, to determine thefinal suitability of a plastics material for theapplication.

Meaning of the symbolsRESISTANCE RATINGS:
A: Resistant. Little or no change in weight. Small effecton mechanical properties. Generally suitable forpractical use.
B: Partially resistant. In course of time, there is adistinct deterioration in mechanical properties and achange in weight. In many cases a short exposuremay be considered allowable.
C: Non-resistant. After a short time, the material isseriously affected (considerable reduction of themechanical strength and changes in weight). Usingthe material under these conditions is notrecommended.
O: Dissolves.The ratings are intended as a guide only, and not as analternative to actual testing. Quadrant EngineeringPlastic Products strongly recommends preliminarytesting of the finished plastics part under actualservice conditions, which represents the only methodfor evaluating final suitability for use.

Looking up by means of the chemical formulaIf you find a chemical is not listed in Table I or there areno ratings given for some of the plastic materials incontact with your specific reagent, even then it is oftenpossible to get an idea of the chemical resistance basedon the type of chemical product.Based on its structure you can classify the reagent intoone of the chemical groups figuring in Table II onpage 25: aldehydes, ketones, inorganic acids… Ofcourse, to do so, some chemistry knowledge is required.Next, search Table III on the same page for one or morerepresentatives of this chemical group and check table Ifor the resistance ratings of the different plastics against
these chemicals. This will give you an idea of theQuadrant EPP stock shapes resistance to your specificnon-listed chemical.It should be clear, however, that the ratings found in thisway are of a very indicative nature only. It namely occursto see contradicting ratings for different representativesof the same chemical group. These differences canmostly be attributed to variations in the molecularstructure of the chemicals. The better your choice of therepresentative or i.e. the better the chemical structuresmatch, the higher the reliability of the chemical ratingsfound.

Product X belongs to the group of the organic acids (to be derived from its chemical structure).

RESISTANCE AGAINST INORGANIC ACIDS, BASES AND SALTS
Inorganic acids, bases and salts are used in a variety ofconcentrations, as mixtures or on their own.In Table I only the “single” chemicals are figuring,mixtures of chemical products are not included. Theeffect of mixtures on plastics, however, is difficult topredict: it can be greater or smaller than the sum of theindividual “components”.For pure inorganic aqueous solutions as well as formixtures, the pH-value of the solution often proves to bea reliable tool when assessing the chemical resistance ofsemi-crystalline plastics. Table V gives the pH-limits atroom temperature that generally apply to the differentQuadrant EPP stock shapes.
