Sunday, August 28, 2011
What Is A QR Code?• A QR (quick

• Developed by a Japanese Corp. in 1994, they’re widely used in Japan and the U.K.

How Do You Use ‘Em?• Two requirements:
You must have a smartphone and a QR code reader app downloaded.
• Then, open app, point your phone’s camera at the code and it automatically takes a picture and connects you to the code’s link.

Tech Trends: Code Use• Currently about 25% of consumers
use smartphones. That number is projected to rise almost exponentially over the next decade as people upgrade technologies.
• 52% of consumers have heard of or seen a code, 28% have scanned.
• Many top brands (Ford, Pepsi, Starbucks, McDonald’s) use them.

What’s The Cost?• QR codes are very cost-effective (aka free).
• There’s no cost for producers to generate QR codes online.
• And the app needed for a smartphone to read the code is also free for users to download (and it only takes about 30 seconds to do so).
• The only cost is for an online content producer to generate the content (audio, photos, copy, etc.) that will be accessed via the QR code.

• Flyers, posters, pamphlets, invitations, business cards, etc.
• Store contests and giveaways
• Memorials, headstones, etc.
*Note: This is not an endorsement – just a good example.

Now You Try• QR codes are just the
gateway to content. The question today is: Can they be used to provide audio content to museum patrons?
• The answer is yes.
• This code is a link to a blog post with audio files, a photo slideshow and additional content.
