Cutting Instructions for Step 5

Red Fabric:

1 square 10½” x 10½” from strip saved in Step 3.

Cut 7 strips (2” x WOF).

Dark Blue Fabric:

Cut 7 strips (4” x WOF).

Piecing for Step 5

Complete Corner Stars. Lay out Unit 4-B, Unit 4-C, and Unit 3-B as pictured below. Sew the 3 rows together and press the seams to the outside. Make 4 of these and square to 10½” if necessary. Label as Unit 5-A.

Complete Row 4. Sew 2 Unit 4-E, 2 Unit 3-E, and a 10½” square of Red Fabric as pictured below. This row will use the Unit 3-E’s where the middle seam is pressed to the Gold point. Make 1.

Assemble Quilt Center. Using the following layout, sew the rows together, pressing all the seams in one direction.

Unit 2-D Row 2 Row 3 Row 4 Row 3 (Reversed) Row 2 (Reversed) Unit 2-D (Reversed)

Borders. Measure the quilt length through the center of the quilt. Sew together all of the 2” x WOF Red strips. Cut 2 side border sections from the large strip you just made that are equal to the length measurement. Add one of the borders to each side of the quilt.

Measure the quilt width through the center of the quilt including the side borders. From the remaining long Red strip, cut two more borders equal to the width measurement. Add them to the top and bottom of the quilt completing the inside border. Again, measure the quilt through the center to determine the length needed for the outer border. Create the outer border side pieces by sewing together the 4” Dark Blue strips and cut 2 segments to the necessary measurement. Add them to the left and right sides and press the seam toward the outside. Repeat this process for the top and bottom borders.

The mystery is now solved!
