    Queen's First AidVolunteer Application

    Please read through all this information carefully as there is very important information about theapplication process included.

    The mission of Queen's First Aid (QFA) is to offer emergency care to the Queens community without

    prejudice or bias. Care is provided in a competent and professional manner as directed by St. JohnAmbulance Council for Ontario. Members respond to all those in need through attendance at universityevents and as dispatched by Campus Security while on-call.

    Queen's First Aid has been providing First Aid Services to the Queen's Community since 1986. Since thenthe service has evolved from being event based to also including an on-call system. The on-call systemensures that there are always two uniformed QFA Responders ready to respond to any first aid or medicalemergency twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week (during the regular academic year). The on-call teamis dispatched by radio from the Emergency Report Centre, which can be reached by calling 3-6111 oncampus (or 613-533-6111 off campus) or by activating a blue light emergency phone or a blue assistancephone. QFA's presence is also seen at many events, both on and off campus, where first aid teams provide

    coverage free of charge. The team is also dedicated to First Aid and CPR education, offering courses atreduced rates to students.

    The Queen's First Aid team is currently made up of forty highly trained, professional volunteers. The teamis under the leadership of a six-person executive including: the Director, Communications Coordinator,Duties Coordinator, Operations Coordinator, Treasurer and the Training Coordinator. Support also comesfrom Supervisors within the unit, the Alma Mater Society, Campus Security, Environmental Health andSafety, and St. John Ambulance. All Responders are required to volunteer a minimum of six hours a week,as well as complete the Advanced Medical First Responder Course in the Fall Semester, and attendmandatory monthly trainings. In order to join Queen's First Aid, applicants are required to have at aminimum: Standard First Aid (or equivalent) and CPR C(or equivalent). Any other training or experienceis an asset, though not a requirement. Also, in order to qualify for the St. John Ambulance Responders

    Insurance, applicants are required to be at least sixteen years old as of March 16th

    , 2014. If successful, alladvanced training will be provided by QFA; including advanced first aid training in: airway management,spinal management, medical conditions, intoxication, etc., as well as training in the use of a defibrillator,oxygen administration, spinal boards, and more.

    This application form must be submitted by Sunday March 16that 4:00pmto the AMS Front Desk. A listof applicants selected for interviews will be posted on Monday March 17thby 8:00amin front of the AMSOffice. If you are selected for an interview it will be your responsibility to sign up for an interview time.Interviews will be held onTuesday March 18th, Wednesday March 19th, andThursday March 20thin theevening. A list of candidates selected to attend a full day of training on Saturday March 22ndwill then beposted outside the AMS Office by Friday March 21stat 8:00am. The Saturdaywill include a mandatoryFirst Aid training and a practical examination (in the evening). Candidates will then be chosen based on their

    interview and performance during the practical situation. Selected candidates will then be on a probationperiod until they have successfully completed the 40 hour (two weekends) Advanced Medical FirstResponder course offered to the unit in the fall.
