CHALLENGE 4PARETO DIAGRAM
(Potholes in the Mumbai city)
By TEAM: SIMSREE TrianGirlsMembers: Roshani Kothari Chitra Wani Dhanashri Gonge MMS(1st year)
INTRODUCTION Pareto diagram is basically used to
categorize the different problems faced in any situation
Accordingly they are arranged priority wise with topmost priority at the beginning and lowermost priority task at the end
Its used mainly to focus on most difficult problems first and gradually moving on to the less significant ones.
It is developed as a quality control tool
Stratification of symptoms of Potholes
Symptoms of potholes can be classified into 2 types: Natural symptoms:
Damage due to heavy rainsLand slidesEarthquakes- develops cracks in the roadHeat of the sun- It can dry out the asphalt which
makes the upper layer brittle. This creates stresses in the roadbed
Extreme cold in winter- just like too much heat can make the surface brittle, too much cold can have the same effect. Also if water has percolated in the cracks, then it expands in winter while turning to ice, thus leading to pothole formation
Man-made symptoms:Illegal usage of materialManipulation of quantity of materials usedOverburdened vehicles moving on the roadNeglecting the repair of possible potholesDigging of roads for electric wires, water
pipes, etc.Funds not used properly for construction of
good roadsToo much corruption in the government
body which decides the allocation of road construction projects
Accountability for Potholes
As we can see in the given pie chart, around 85% of the potholes are caused due to man-made reasons
Natural factors account to 15% Out of the man-made
symptoms, the reasons which account for 80% frequency of occurrence include: Road digging Neglecting repairs Use of lower quality mixtures
and Improper use of material Corruption in the committee
which approves the final road project
PROBLEM DEFINITION Many potholes already exist. If not repaired on
time and neglected may cause harm to many individuals
Accidents, back ache, damage to vehicles, etc. are few such problems
Also Mumbai being the commercial capital of India and one of the must visit tourist place should not face such problems
It leaves a bad impression on the foreigners Committee deciding the project allocation should
take decisions without indulging in corrupt activities
For this proper selection of committee should be done
LESSONS LEARNED BY THE TEAM
Pareto principle can be applied in real life too
We can identify the major problems first and while focusing on them certain small difficulties might get solved gradually
Also the principle says that 80% of the problems are caused by 20% of the issues
This will help us to perform better It can be used to improve the quality of the
work we do Make use of resources in an effective
manner
