    Qatar Tops MENA Region in Global Peace Index

    2012

    Doha: The State of Qatar topped the Middle East and North African(MENA) region in Global Peace Index (GPI) 2012. The index ispublished by Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) which is basedin Sydney, Australia and this year's index was announced at Londonon Tuesday June 12, 2012.

    Qatar came in the first place among the Arab countries and in 12thplace on global level among 158 countries covered by the GPI whichadded 5 more countries this year apart from 153 countries listedlast year. Qatar gained score of 1.395 in the place of 1.398 of theprevious year which means that Qatar has improved its scoring.

    Globally Qatar came ahead of many countries such as Sweden (14),Germany (15), Malaysia (20), Singapore (23), Britain (29), Italy(38) France (40) and the United States (88).

    Among Arab countries Qatar was placed first 34 places ahead of thenext Arab country in the list.

    The GPI is considered as the leading measure of global peacefulnessand it is produced by Institute of Economics & Peace, a non-profitresearch institute that studies the relations between economics,business and peace.

    The Report notes that all regions except Middle East and North

    Africa (MENA) showed improvement in the peace, as most of thecountries in the MENA has gone down in the list, while Qatarmaintained its position topping the regional list.
