Introduction

WelcometoQabalafortheabsolutebeginner. Youmightbeaskingyourself,what istheQabala? Agood friendofmineoncesaid,Well, thatseasy.Qabala is thestudyofGodandeverything. Andseveralauthors state,TheHolyQabala is the studyofconsciousness. Ofcourse, this leads to thequestion,whatisconsciousness?Theanswertothatwillbeexploredthroughoutthetext.Accordingtotheteaching,whenGodspoketheword,livingforcescameintoexistence.TheseforcesaresymbolizedbythetwentytwolettersoftheHebrewalphabetandarethebasicforcesthatresultedin creation. So an excellent place to begin the study of theQabala is by examining eachof theseletters.PleaseunderstandthattheQabala isnotstrictlya Jewishapproach. Aperson fromanybackgroundcanrelatetotheQabalasince it issimplyanexplanationofhowGodcreatedallthatexists. Further,itspossiblethatlettersinotherlanguagesalsosymbolizetheseforces,buttheHebrewletterswillbepresentedhere.

ThefirstletterisAleph.Alephsymbolizesoneofthebasicforcesthatresultedinexistence,namelytheconstantlyrecurringmomentintime.FromthepointofviewofAleph,thereisnopastorfuture,onlythepresentmoment.Thepastiscomposedofmemoriesandthefutureexistsaspossiblecoursesofaction.Bothofthese,thepastandfuture,existonlyinthemind.Butthepresentmomentisdifferent.Inthepresentmomentyoucanlookoutsideyourselfandphysicallyperceivetheworldasitexistsnow.The present moment, therefore, is a clue to understanding Aleph. When God, who is timeless,spoke,thepresentmoment,Aleph,cameintobeing.Alephisthefirststepintheinfinitebecomingfinite. Without this constantly recurringmoment in time, therecouldbeno creation,no instantofexistence;onlytimelessness,limitlessness.IntheBible,Genesisisntwritteninthepasttense.BiblicalHebrewisntwritteninanytenseatall.ItsjustasaccuratetosayAndGodisspeakingthewordandallthingsarecomingintoexistence.God speaking thewordmomentbymoment isalso thekey to thebasicvibrationof creation. Thewhole of creation vibrates, or sings,with a timeless pulsation: onoff, onoff. This is theway thepresentcomes intoexistence. Thisonoffvibration isnecessary,because iftherewasnopause(off)therewouldbenopresentmoment(on).Everythingwouldbementallysolid,outsideoftime,andthisisaperfectdefinitionofthepast.Thepastisafrozen,unchangingmentalimagewhichissimplythere.So,abreakhastooccur inorderforthisunmovingpasttobeseparatedfromeachpresentmoment.Asabitoftimecomesintoexistence,itimmediatelybecomescreated,fixed,andpartofthepast.Forthisreason,Alephiscalledthescintillatingconsciousnessorintelligence.Toscintillatemeanstothrowout sparks, toemitquickbrilliant flashesof light. But this isnt somecold,automatic force like the

flashing lighton thecornerofSixthandMain; this isa living force,Godspeaking theword,desiringcreation!Each letteroftheHebrewalphabethas itsownspelling,buttherulesaredifferent. Inthisway,theletter is included in the spelling. Forexample,Aleph is spelledwith threeHebrew letters:Aleph,Lammed,andPeh.InEnglishthiswouldbe:ALP.NoticethatAlephisusedinspellingAleph.Alittleunusual,perhaps,butthatshowitsdone.IntheHebrewdictionary,ALP,whenspelledout,literallymeansox.TheoxwasthestrongestanimalintheMiddleEast.InAmericaitwouldbethebearorbuffaloandinAfricamostlikelytheelephant.Thepointisgreatstrength.ThefactthatAlephmeansoxisanindicationthatthereisapowerfulurgetobecome.Thisvibrating,scintillatingdesireisemphasizedbytheancientHebrewsasbeingthemostpowerfulofalltheletters,symbolizingGodwantingexistenceandlifetocomeintobeing;scintillating,verypowerful,andeternallypresent.Anotherthoughtconcerningtheox:theoxisabullcastratedbyfarmersintheMiddleEastsoitcanbemoreeasilycontrolled.SoAlephrepresentsacontrolled,directedenergy,notjustawildbullrunningloose.Thisagainindicatesthatthecreatordidntspeakthewordandthenwanderoff,sotospeak.Itsstillbeingspokennowandinapowerful,directedmanner.

TheQabalisticTreeofLifeisamapofconsciousness.

AproperexplorationofAlephmust include theQabalisticTreeofLife.As you can see, the tree consists of circles, called the Sephiroth, andconnectionsbetween themcalledchannelsorpaths. In thesamewaythat the exploration of the living forces, symbolized by the Hebrewletters, is a study of consciousness, the Tree of Life is a map ofconsciousness.ThetreeisateachingaidwhichputstheQabalisticideastogetherintoanunderstandableform,likearoadmap.Therearemany

ways to label theSephirothandpaths,dependingonwhatyouarestudying. Forexample, fromanartistspointofviewtheQabalisticmeaningscanbehintedatthroughtheuseofcolor.AstrologyisaveryimportantpartoftheQabalaandwillbepresentedinconjunctionwiththelettersaswegothroughthem.Hereisatreelabeledwiththeastrologicalsignsandplanets.

ThetopSephirah,Kether, isthePrimeMover,theGodhead,thevastcountenanceemanatingoutoftheGreatUnmanifest. ThesecondSephirah isChokmah. This iscalledtheSecondGlory. The letterAleph is placed on the path between Kether and Chokmah. This path describes the relationshipbetweenKetherandChokmahand isthe interactionoftheprimecreator,thefirstprinciple,with itsreflection,Chokmah.Thethinkinggoeslikethis:FromthenothingnessoftheGreatUnmanifest,aVastCountenance(theGodhead)manifests.Itstandsaloneandisselfcreated.Itisallthereis,soithasnochoicebuttoreflectuponitself.Inordertobeaperfectreflection,asGodisperfect,theimagemustalsobeselfconsciousandlookingbackatGod.ThisproducesachangeinKetherbecauseitnowhasanadditionalawarenessofitselfthroughthemirrorofChokmah.ThisinturnproducesachangeintheChokmah image which now includes Kethers additional awareness, which then produces moreadditional instantaneous feedback,backand forth,backand forth,settingup the firstvibration, thescintillation symbolized by Aleph. Various books talk about the descent of a lightning bolt ofconsciousness from Kether on a zigzag path down the Tree of Life through each Sephirah until itreachesSephirahten,theSephirahattheverybottomofthetree(noticephysicalexistence isatthevery bottom of the tree the final result). The beginning of this lightning flash is from Kether toChokmahalongtheAlephpath.Uranusisthemostappropriateastrologicalsymbolforthispathsincemorethananyotherplanetorsign, Uranus is associated with lightning.Psychologically speaking, Uranus is thelightning flash of sudden inspiration, theawakening to some new concept, intuitiveidea, or new awareness. Uranus, TheAwakener, isplacedherewiththe ideaoftheinstantaneous flash of lightning orconsciousness from instant to instant, thealwayspresentinstantaneousmomentsymbolizedbyAleph.
