A main convention within indie pop music videos are Narratives which mainly revolve around Romance
Taylor Swift is a perfect example of this. Her music video ‘Love Story’ which has a Romeo and Juliet inspired narrative, the ultimate love story. Her music video has an essence of love, romance and happiness which is portrayed through setting (grassy fields, kissing under the sunset.) close ups emphasizes that this is a 'love story’ as when there are close ups of them holding hands or kissing the audience is forced to focus on only this helping portray a romantic feeling.
Another main convention is that within pop/indie music videos there is normally only a solo singer. Rihanna’s music video ‘Only girl in the
world’ is an example as she is the only person in the music video. Like taylor swift she also follows a narrative of romance but within her lyrics ‘you make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world’ the red effect over
the video could connote a sense of love and romance as well as the close ups and happy and smiling facial expressions she uses almost as if her
lover is right in front of her
In terms of what conventions we used, we took in mind main conventions such as an overall sense of happiness within the music video
Through facial expressions
Free body movements
Florence and the Machine’s ‘You’ve got the Love’ is a perfect example of what we wanted for our video.
It had no narrative but a video made up of clips with a theme, which expressed happiness and
having a good time.
