Message from Andrea BarrackGlobal Head, Sustainability and Corporate Citizenship

If people aren’t confident about their health, then they are less likely to be confident about their future. And recent studies have shown that race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and geography can play a large part in one’s ability to access health care. That’s why we focused the 2019 TD Ready Challenge on finding innovative solutions to help increase equitable health outcomes for more people. After all, the annual TD Ready Challenge, launched in 2018, was built on the premise that with TD’s support, the charitable and not-for-profit sector can catalyze the creation and scaling of ideas relevant to the goals of the TD Ready Commitment.

This quarter was marked by the culmination of the Challenge, starting off our year on an incredible high note. In December, after a rigorous and exciting process, we announced the names of the 10 recipient organizations that each received a $1 million (CDN) TD Ready Challenge grant to support their ideas and programs that will help remove barriers to good health. Solutions developed by these recipients are focused on tackling healthcare inequity by helping to increase access to early detection and intervention for a variety of diseases, so more people can live longer and healthier lives. We are thrilled to help these 10 recipient organizations – six from Canada and four from the US – in their journey to reshape the future of healthcare:

• University of Victoria• Ontario Institute for Cancer Research• The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation• University of Manitoba• Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation• Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia• Baystate Health Foundation/Baystate Medical Center• Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory• Fund for Public Health in New York City• University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI)

Our commitment to these organizations over the next three years is a concrete demonstration of the Better Health component of the TD Ready Commitment – our global corporate citizenship platform, helping to build a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow. The crucial work being done by the 10 grant recipients for the 2019 TD Ready Challenge is helping to bring all of us one step closer to a future that everyone can look forward to.

TD Commons at CAMHLast November, TD announced a landmark donation of more than CDN$20 million to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, making it one of the single largest corporate gifts CAMH has received to date. The funding will help drive research, impact care programs, and contribute to the work involved with eliminating stigmas associated with mental illness and addiction.

In recognition of the Bank’s longtime support of CAMH, the soon-to-be revitalized Shaw Park on the CAMH grounds in Toronto will be named ‘TD Commons’ upon completion. A part of CAMH’s redevelopment project, the new green space is set to open in 2020 and will be available to the public, providing a place for CAMH patients and others in the area to enjoy. The park will help to increase greenery in a busy urban area, while also serving as quiet space where patients and the public can reflect and re-focus. The Bank’s landmark donation to CAMH speaks to the Bank’s pledge, through the TD Ready Commit-ment, to help build a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow

TD is proud to support CAMH, Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital and a world leading mental health research centre. It’s one of the many ways the Bank is investing in innovative healthcare research and solutions as part of the Better Health driver of the TD Ready Commitment, which aims to create more equitable health outcomes for all.
