It’s a Grand Slam for the New Club in McKinney
Trying to organize a new ACBL sanctioned club can have its challenges, but the answer may be “to think outside the (bidding) box.” And, that’s just what a group of deter-mined bridge players did in McKinney.
The journey began in March 2012 when our small group of bridge enthusiasts met with a City recreational staff member to ask the City to provide a site for a sanctioned game. The presenters compared this “mental sport” to or-ganized city sports leagues, describing the Friendly Bridge Club at a Plano recreational facility as a model program. Unfortunately, the city official did nothing after the initial meeting. Two months later, we regrouped and presented our proposal to operate a game on behalf of the City to another city official who only listened and took notes. However, we were not ready to pass on the idea of a sanc-tioned game in McKinney.
As a newcomer to this Collin County suburb, I suggested an idea that had been shared with me in 1992. I asked the executive director of the state tennis organization to help a group of tennis players develop a plan to secure funding for a public tennis facility in San Angelo. The director stressed the “numbers game” to reach our goal and sug-gested forming a community tennis association. After or-ganizing the Concho Valley Tennis Association that attract-ed over 200 juniors in a year-round program, the City sup-ported our efforts and constructed an eight-court facility.
The determined group of bridge players took this idea to their social duplicate games in their neighborhoods and at social private club games. These veteran McKinney social duplicate players shared posters, announcing our commit-ment to create a weekly sanctioned game with the for-mation of a formal bridge club. For several weeks, the list of prospective members began to grow. At the same time, we established a board of directors and began setting goals to offer the first sanctioned ……...Continued on p. 2

Out & About ..continued from page 1 …..game by the Fall. By August, an invitation to join
the new McKinney Duplicate Bridge Club began to circulate throughout the area at the social duplicate bridge
events. Meanwhile, the first MDBC Board of Directors elected Melba Lancaster as president, completed the paper-
work to be an ACBL sanctioned group, made a wish list of supplies, and approved funding for a web site. The group
had faith that the minimal annual membership dues of $5 could help pay the startup costs. Fortunately, some of
the new members chose to pay as much as $100 for their membership into the new club.
The biggest challenge continued to be securing a facility for the weekly Thursday game. Following a suggestion by several members, Melba contacted the Salvation Army about renting the gym once a week. Major Robert Win-ters described the facility as “under-utilized during the day,” and welcomed the idea of the new partnership. The two groups agreed on a minimal weekly rental fee. Additionally, the board of directors pledged to support the phi-losophy of the Salvation Army: “Doing the Most Good.”
Besides looking for a location, the board began the search to find a director for the new club. During a mentoring session with Dorsey Shaw at her studio in Richardson, the board reached another goal. Not only did Dorsey agree to direct the weekly game, she also offered bidding boxes, cards, and other supplies. The facility also provides a per-fect classroom setting for Dorsey to teach intermediate and advanced bridge lessons.
Like baseball, a manager was needed to lead the team. One of the founding members stepped forward, volun-teering to serve as the club manager. Karen Roland applied for the club’s ACBL membership and began reporting scores to the national organization. Karen who had played in her first ACBL event in March was committed to see that this new club would be successful.
When the MDBC board of directors opened the doors for the first game in September, we literally held our breaths until the magical number of 7.5 tables registered for our first game. We need 30 participants who pay the $6 participation fee to meet the expenses to operate a game. Since the first game, attendance has ranged from 7.5 tables to 15 tables with an average of at least 10 tables each Thursday.
This new venture in McKinney is a grand slam for not only the 136 MDBC members and the local Salvation Army but also local residents in need of food. Club members support the local facility with food item donations, serving as the primary food donors for the local pantry. Members also donate money and their time for special projects that include counting money during the Christmas donation season and delivering care packages to families.
Our commitment to the Salvation Army is posted at our website: www.mckinneyduplicate bridge.net, along with our logo and club information. A tiny heart that dots the “I” in the McKinney logo is significant, representing com-ments heard from members, including players from surrounding suburbs: “ I love playing at the new McKinney Club.”
Truly, this new ACBL duplicate bridge club is “Doing the Most Good” in McKinney…not only for bridge enthusi-asts!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
I had a couple come into the
club to buy an entry who told
me they found a watch in the parking lot of
BAND on the way in and asked if I would
please mention it. Of course, I was very busy
trying to sell entries and set up four games to
start on time. After about their 3rd request,
I stopped what I was doing and made the an-
nouncement. Sure enough several players
joked around asking if it was a Rolex then it
was theirs. One woman came up, very seri-
ously stating that she lost her Mother’s
watch that had been left to her and asked if
it was a Diamond Rolex. I thought she was
just joking (along with everyone else in the
room). I directed her to the couple, and she
described it to a T. She could not have been
more delighted. Not only was it a very expen-
sive piece of jewelry, it had a very special
meaning for her. The couple who found the
watch and turned it over to
the owner was John (Jack)
and Jill Hartel. Thanks to
their honesty a truly grate-
ful player was reunited with
a treasured keep-
sake! submitted by Kathy Bumgardner

Talk from the Tables Friendly Bridge Club’s Featured Players: Many of us have met June and Dick Barnebey at the bridge table, but how many of us are aware of their remarkable life before they moved to Dallas?
The Barnebeys met at the University of North Texas where both were active in student government. Dick was student body presi-dent and June was a senator where she used her years of experi-ence as a high school and college debater. They married as gradu-ate students. Finishing school, Dick began work in his chosen pro-fession, a career diplomat serving as a foreign service officer with the U. S. State Dept.
Over the next 35 years, the couple served in Austria, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Belize. In Austria, June faithfully took German lessons but never became as fluent in German as she was in Spanish. Being the wife of a high ranking diplomat and, ultimate-ly, an ambassador, she had duties only a smart, organized and ener-getic woman could handle. She was to host luncheons, dinners and cocktail parties for hundreds of guests in their home. Granted they lived in large houses with servants, still June had to decide the menus, see that it was prepared and served properly, stand as a couple to receive every guest (it helped to remember each one's name), and see that the liquor and food flowed properly. She had to keep a written account of every expenditure, a copy of the guest list and the purpose of the occasion, so they could be reimbursed for expenses due them and for the IRS.
On the fun side, Dick and June kept up their bridge skills and even played in tournaments representing the country or city in which they were living. They played on the Nicaraguan team against El Salva-dor and Guatemala (see current picture of them with their trophy won in 1970). In Bolivia they played on the city of La Paz team against Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. Wherever they have lived, their dear-est and closest friends have been those who played bridge. The Barnebeys retired from the State Dept. in 1986 and eventually moved back to Dallas. They no longer play as partners but like to compare hands they have played with other partners. Both are silver life masters. The couple had 3 sons during Dick's service in the State Dept: one born in Vienna, one in Ecuador, and one in Dallas. Dick has gone back on assignment with the OSCE as an election observer to east-ern European countries to ensure there is no fraud at the polls. Continuing her interest in government, June works at the polls in every Collin County/Plano election. They are a modest cou-ple and only by luck would you find out about their wealth of expe-rience in the foreign service. Written by Elaine Lagerstrom
Behind the Scene The following is a brief sto-
ry that should give you some insight as to what goes on behind the scenes while you're playing bridge at a tournament. Though fictional, it is based on real life occurrences —"kinda". Understandably, the names have been changed to protect the inno-cent and the guilty. After just having won a nail biting morning knockout in Bracket IV by one point over a team that had the skills to be in a higher bracket, you are out celebrating by having a nice lunch. Flush with success, the discussion is naturally about what kind of 'whupping' you will put on the team you will face in the afternoon. Oblivious to you, that next team might be a product of some very hardworking volunteers. Since long before the tournament starts and right up until 5 minutes before every session, the partnership desk is matching players. While you are enjoying your lunch, the partnership volunteers are munching on a cold sandwich (probably brought from home) and are hard at work. A few of their
phone calls went something like this: "Mr. Smith, this is Mrs. Jones at the
bridge tournament partnership desk. I’m sor-ry - What?.....You want me to call you Spike be-cause it intimidates your opponents…...Okay Spike. I am calling because you filled out a part-nership card, and I have a partner for you this afternoon…...You’ve already found a partner? Okay, I'll remove the card…...No?..... Just leave it? But, it was only for today…...Leave it any-how?.....Tell you what, I'll tape it to the wall so that it will be here and ready this time next year.” One more bite of a sandwich and on to the next phone call….. “Is this Mary?.....Mary, I have a very nice partner for you tomorrow in the 299er pairs. She has 204 masterpoints, and I think you will be a great match…...Yes, I know you have 268…...You think she is not good enough to play with you?.....Well, if I find someone be-tween 265 and 275, I’ll give you a call.” “Jim, your card says you’re looking for a player named Nancy that you played with last year. Can you be a little more specific?.....No, I’m sorry, brown hair and 50ish doesn’t help me.” And my favorite: “ No, you cannot play teams with only three players.” If you are shaking your head and laughing right now, just know that these aren’t yarns. So when you stroll past the partnership desk, give those folks a round of applause. And, maybe a cookie. They could use both. written by David Greims

Dorsey’s Bridge Studio celebrated the 4th of July with a full house of friends, frankfurters, & fun. George Cowart set the mood with a moving
narration of the Gettysburg Address. It re-
minded us how fortunate we are to be a free
nation. The freedom we experience daily is
safeguarded by the dedication of the many

What Does It Take to Host a Tournament?
As you walk to the directors' table at a bridge tournament, pay your entry fee for the game of your choice and prepare
for an exhilarating 3 1/2 hours of the world's number one game, have you ever wondered what it takes to make the neces-
sary preparations so you can do just that? In this article, I will do my best to give you a better idea (though probably not
complete) of the many, many things that must take place to make the game of bridge more enjoyable for you.
Months, maybe years, prior to each tournament, dates must be decided upon and sanctions from the ACBL ac-
quired. Once a venue has been chosen, contract negotiations are begun and eventually finalized. Then a Tournament Chair-
person is selected or appointed, and now the race to accomplish everything begins. Schedule fliers are designed (usually
by the tournament committee and volunteers), printed, distributed, and uploaded to websites. With those
items accomplished, the real work is still ahead. The Tournament Chairperson has to arrange for Tournament Directors,
find chairpersons for partnership, registration, and hospitality, kitchen staff, and caddies. Next, the Tournament Chairperson
seeks the help of many selfless people, commonly referred to as volunteers, who will keep things running smoothly. Food,
drinks, snacks and treats must be purchased and delivered to the site. In addition, a food caterer must be acquired for lunch
at the sectional’s final day Swiss Game. Would you play if there was no food? Now for the big numbers (based on Dallas
area sectional and regional tournaments):
100 to 200+ bridge tables transported, uncrated, set up and wiped down.
400 to 800+ bidding boxes to be placed on those tables.
25 to 40 sets of duplicate boards, that equates to as many as 1440 individual boards, and 74,880 playing cards.
12 to 18 sets of guide cards.
Stanchions, coffee makers, water coolers, ice chests, napkins, soft drink cups, etc.
Up to 70 gallons of coffee (yes gallons), along with sugar, creamer, stirrers, and coffee cups that will hold 70 gallons.
Hundreds of soft drinks.
Thousands of snacks and treats.
Approximately 14,000 to 30,000 hands of Bridge will be played.
Untold Director Calls and rulings.
Don't forget those 20 or 30 master points you might earn. (If the stars are all aligned in your favor!)
And most importantly, the many smiles of all of you who have just enjoyed yourself.
Volunteers are a vital and priceless part of any and all bridge functions; without them it would be virtually impossible
to "pull it all off". The next time you have the opportunity........STOP and just say thanks to one of those amazing people that
make a tournament possible. Better yet, step up, and try your hand at volunteering. Hopefully, you have a few hours each year to give back to the game that has given so much to you. Who knows, you most likely will have some fun and make
some new friends. Written by David Greims

BAND Raises Over $50,000 for The Fight Against Alzheimer’s on The Longest Day
On Friday June 21, the day of the summer solstice which is the longest day of the year, groups all over the
country participated in events that lasted at least 16 hours in an effort to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Associa-
tion. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease which is the most common form of de-
mentia. It causes memory loss and interferes with a person’s ability to accomplish the daily tasks of living. As the
sixth leading cause of death in the US, it is the only disease in the top 10 list that doesn’t have a cure or a preven-
tion.
BAND chose to participate in this
fundraising effort by holding a day of
bridge that began at 6:30 am. Silver
Level Event Sponsors who hosted
shifts of an hour and forty minutes
were Kay Moran, Nancy Latner, Su-
san Keyes, Therese Milford, Shay
Ura, Margaret Ann Purse, Penny
Hawkins, Barbara O’Dell, Laura
Onsgard, and Barbara Ferm. There
were 316 bridge players who played 120 boards at 274 tables over the course of 16.5 hours. Pat Marchman
shared how impressed she was to see so many people supporting this fundraiser which highlights the true impact
this disease has on the families whose members are afflicted. Donna Compton who owns the Bridge Academy of
Dallas and has a grandmother with Alzheimer’s disease said, “ My grandmother will never know we’re doing this,
but it still makes me smile knowing I’m joining the fight with her.”
There were forty two people who graciously sponsored the 34 tables in honor or in memory of their loved
ones who have dealt with the disease. Gold level sponsors pledged to play the full 16.5 hours and donate a $100
entry fee. Those high stamina players were Suresh Agrawal, Jerrold Albom, Deborah Armstrong, Janet Bell, Rich
Brandenburg, Cheryl Clark, Donna Compton, D Cummings, Bob Dingle, Nancy Fellman, Barbara Ferm, Jane Kirby,
Richard Langland, Tammy Madden, Roslyn Miller, E.J. Nowak, Barbara O’Dell, Bill Osborn, Tony Pelligrini, Anita
Pupols, James Richman, Connie Van Patter, and Sharon Ward.
Throughout the day, there were fun contests where generous donations
were given by the players. For example, Bidding 6 NT & Making, Wish
Tricks, Going Down Exactly 500. The spontaneous donors were Suresh
Agrawal, Emily Maduro, Allen Pearlman, Jonathan Mullins, Therese Mil-
ford, and Laura Onsgard. A total of
$2,000 was raised via these on the
spot challenge donations. It added
a little bit more excitement to an already exciting day.
Finally, a very special thank you to all the sponsors as well as all the
participants who made this fundraising event which has raised over
$50,000 such a phenomenal success! In fact, the donations raised at
BAND placed it in the top 5 clubs across the nation for this one day event.

I played (sitting West) in a recent club game.
Dlr: South
Vul: E-W
The bidding went P - 1D - P - 2D (Limit raise??) - P
- 3NT - all pass. North led the 6 of clubs. I thanked
partner and played the K of clubs with South follow-
ing with the ten. I immediately finessed the diamond
jack losing to the King. North thought for a moment
and tabled the Spade 7. I played low from dummy and
smoothly played the Spade ace ( If I won the queen,
surely the opponents would switch back to clubs when
I attacked hearts) on South’s jack. I then led a heart
toward the jack. North grabbed his king and couldn’t
wait to lead the spade King and another spade to his
partner’s queen (oops). I won the spade queen and
knocked out the heart Ace to make a hopeless contract.
As Ms Shafer said, “ Bloom where you’re planted.”
“Try your best. Your opponents might give you a little
help.” I tell my partners don’t give up on a hand and
always give the opponents an opportunity to make a
mistake.
Had East bid 1NT, it may have been a more accurate
description of the strength of the East hand. Though
East’s hand was not quite what I had expected, I never
let the opponents in on my secret.

To Infinity and Beyond!!
To quote Buzz Lightyear, it certainly seems we are going in
that direction. We have the Dallas Labor Day Regional at
the end of this month, the BAND Sectional in November, the
big Unit Christmas Party in December, the Election Sectional
in January and then the Big Daddy of them all - the Dallas
NABC in March. There will be plenty of opportunities for
those elusive points and something else..... plenty of chanc-
es to get involved in the action away from the table.
The last National in Dallas was in 2006. In the coming
months we will be needing volunteers for all sorts of activi-
ties. No matter what level of commitment you can make,
there is a place for you. The registration and information
desks need people to hand out goodies and answer ques-
tions about the local area. The restaurant guide needs up to
date info on current eateries in the downtown area. The
prize desk needs people to hand out awards and section
tops to lucky winners. These are just a few. Partnership
and Hospitality will be forming teams. It isn't necessary to
commit to a large block of time. Some require an hour before
the game, some are after the session and some, like the
restaurant guide, happen before the tournament ever starts.
Let me assure you that great tournaments don't just hap-
pen. They are the result of planning, teamwork, pride, and
old-fashioned elbow grease. They are truly labors of love - a
love of bridge. I hope all of you will consider giving a little of
your time and energy to the game we love. Be a volun-
teer. Let's show the bridge world why good old Texas hospi-
tality just can't be beat.
In the next issue of Table Talk, I'll introduce you to the chairs
of the various committees for the Dallas NABC. In the
meantime, watch for news and updates on the unit
web page - www.dallasbridge.org. We will be putting
information soon on how to sign up to volunteer and
what areas are available. You'll also find a countdown
clock, ticking off the days until March 20, 2014, when
the Nationals kick off. I swear it goes faster every
day. Written by Tomi Fitzgerald
