Jumbo Update Winter 2012Recently I asked Psyche Brown, Manager of Major Pro-

jects within the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO), what the latest was with the Jumbo Resort development proposal.

She told me, “Based on commitments that Peter Walters (recently assigned Assistant Deputy Minister of First Na-tions & Community Opportunities within the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations & Reconciliation) had made with the Ktunaxa Nation, they and the Shuswap Nation (near Invermere) were provided with binders containing all the information upon which Steve Th omson, Minister of FLNRO, will rely on to make his decision regarding the proposed resort.

“Included in the package is the land use report and the aboriginal interest consideration report with many attachments. Th e Ktunaxa and Shuswap Nations have until January 23, 2012 to scrutinize the material for any gaps or inaccuracies.”

Last summer “Mr. Th omson met with the Ktunaxa and toured the site of the development proposal while in Invermere.” However he has continued to ignore invita-tions to meet with any representatives of either the Jumbo Creek Conservation Society and/or Wildsight. “It will be aft er January 23, 2012 that Minister Th omson may make his decision.”

It was in November 2010 that the Ktunaxa Nations Delegation to the legislature presented their Qat’Muk Declaration which declared, among other points, that the whole Jumbo area is a sacred cultural site for them. At the time of the Qat’Muk anniversary, November 2011, they renewed their call for the province to deny the Jumbo Glacier Resort development proposal.

Also, relevant to the Jumbo issue is that “An audit was done recently on the Environmental Assessment Offi ce,” Ms Brown said. “Th e EAO were badly beaten up for not doing well enough on compliance follow-up, and, that they never disapprove an application.” Psyche defended the EAO saying they only give the nod to applications they feel are viable.

Arts, Culture And Heritage Grant Applications

Artists in all disciplines – as well as arts, culture and heritage organizations – are invited to apply for fund-ing through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), which delivers the Arts, Culture and Heritage Program of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).

For 2012/2013, funding has increased by $55,000 to $706,000. Th is will help CKCA better meet demand in sought-aft er programs like minor capital for arts and herit-age facilities, support for touring and major project funding.

“We’re very happy CBT has increased the funding made available to arts, heritage and culture through our pro-grams,” said Jacquie Hamilton, CKCA Chair. “Th e works of these organizations and individuals touch upon the lives of people throughout the Basin, and CKCA appreci-ates the opportunity to provide support.”

Funding is available for: individual and group projects; minor capital projects; touring; arts and heritage men-toring/master classes; organizational development; major projects; artists in education; major exhibits; major herit-age capital projects; and heritage projects.

“Th is is support for our neighbours, our museums, our local theatre troupes - for the many ways arts, culture and heritage weave through our lives,” said Gary Ockenden, CBT Director of Community Engagement. “We’re proud CBT can strengthen this sector in order to benefi t the whole community.”

Kaslo Food Security Update!Th e Kaslo Food Security Project is updating the West

Kootenay Food Directory and the Farmland Database and we need your input!

Our communities have been learning about how im-portant it is to consume local food. With growing con-cerns over accessing the essential need for nutrients and our global food system increasingly serving up question-able, unhealthy, unaff ordable, and environmentally toxic food, we have to reclaim and rebuild our local food sys-tem. Community groups within the West Kootenay have been providing lots of education and tools leading to an increased capacity and hunger to consume local food. Now the challenge is to increase local food production to feed that local appetite.

Th e West Kootenay Food Directory is a listing of both farmers and retailers of local food. With all of the interest in increasing our local food consumption, the West Koo-tenay Food Directory aims to be a source of connection between eaters and those who provide local food. If you are a grower, seller, procurer, or promoter of local food, please contact the Kaslo Food Security Project so we can include your information in the directory.

Th e Farmland Database is a listing of both farmers and landowners who are looking to also increase the local food capacity for the West Kootenay area. Th e database provides listings of land available as well as farmers look-ing to fi nd land to steward. With the cost of land being prohibitive for a farmer’s wage, the Farmland Database aims to connect farmers with land where they can grow food aff ordably. With the need to support and encour-age farmers, the West Kootenay Food Directory and the Farmland Database were both created to support local farmers and markets to increase local food production.

Production Of Les Miserables At Stanley Humphries

When it comes to keeping the arts alive in a community, students are oft en the ones behind the hard work, vision, and the resulting success and municipal pride that local theatre productions can provide. In keeping with the spir-it of community theatre, the Stanley Humphries Second-ary School production of Les Miserables has the pleasure of bringing students from multiple schools and commun-ities together, working towards one vision. In turn, they hope to provide awareness for the arts in a local commun-ity, build school and community pride, and demonstrate the success that comes from dedication, cooperation, and little bit of hard work.

Th e show, half a year in the making, promises to provide a high level of entertainment, a script and performance-driven emotional story told by a keen group who believe in its message, and an example of the talent and achieve-ment that students are able to fi nd in themselves.

Th e premiere of Les Miserables will take place at Stanley Humphries Secondary School (activity room) in Castle-gar on Friday, February 17 at 7 pm. You can also catch this production on Saturday, February 18 at 7 pm or at the Sunday matinee, February 19.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and available from the Castlegar Library, Bagels and Brew in Castlegar, and Eddy Music in Nelson. CAUTION ma-ture content! We request no small children.

As the facilitator for a weekly drop-in program, you will assist adults with a mental illness to develop the skills and confi dence necessary to live satisfying and productive lives in the community. This assistance is provided in a psychosocial program designed to empower and support its members. The confi dential voluntary drop-in program provides a non-institutional setting where adults with a mental illness give each other support as they work to rebuild their confi dence, stamina, and concentration, and social interactions.

Canine Good Neighbour TrialTh e West Kootenay Kennel Club will be hosting a Canine

Good Neighbour (CGN) Trial on Sunday, February 19 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Castlegar Complex. Th e Canadian Ken-nel Club’s Canine Good Neighbour Program is a full Obedi-ence Title, open to all dogs, both purebred and mixed-breed dogs, and aims to identify and reward responsible, caring owners and their canine partners throughout Canada. Th is non competitive test aspires to have dogs accepted as valued members of our communities. Canine Good Neighbours can be counted on to present good manners at home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs.

Twelve tests are used to assess the handler and dog’s re-lationship, together with the handler’s ability to control the dog. Dogs are evaluated on their ability to perform basic exercises as well as their ability to demonstrate good manners in everyday situations, including accepting a friendly stranger, coming when called, and reacting to distractions and other passing dogs. Successful dogs will receive a Certifi cate from the Canadian Kennel Club.

Th e Canadian Kennel Club and the West Kootenay Kennel Club encourage all dog owners to participate in this program, ensuring that our beloved canines are wel-come and respected members of our communities.

Please note: If you have a registered dog, please bring your registration papers to the trial so that your dog can have his/her full name, with proper spelling on the CKC issued certifi cate with the title CGN aft er it. Also, please bring your vaccination information and your dog’s brush for the grooming section of the test.
