From television to radio, newspapers to the Internet, we can’t seem to escape the role that media plays in our lives today. In fact, we could easily fi nd ourselves being inter-viewed by the media as the spokesperson of an organiza-tion, interest group or business so when it happens, it’s best to be prepared. Selkirk College is off ering a media skills course that will provide you with the communica-tion tools to deliver a clear and eff ective message.

Media relations skills can be learned by anyone. If you want to be better prepared for your “15 minutes of fame” register for Selkirk’s You’re On Th e Air: Media Relations Skills course off ered at the Silver King campus in Nelson on Friday, November 4 and at the Nakusp campus on Sat-urday, November 26. Th is participatory one day workshop will be led by local communication and fundraising train-er Lorna Visser of Carmanah Strategies. Laura is a former daily newspaper reporter with a degree in journalism.

A New Member Benefi ts Package Aft er 36 years as the Kootenay’s community-owned nat-

ural food store, the Kootenay Co-op is proud to present an exciting new benefi ts package for its 10,000 members.

Th e changes to the Member Benefi ts Package hope to create a more equitable shopping experience for all mem-bers from all income brackets and lifestyle habits: from members who live local and pick up their groceries on a daily basis, to families who live farther afi eld and do larger shops less frequently.

“As our membership has substantially grown over the years, so has its diversity,” says Board Director Jon Stein-man. “As a result, the board and management determined that some benefi ts did not support members equitably and the new package responds to this by ensuring all member-

owners of the Co-op benefi t equally and more oft en.” Th e patronage return is one of the benefi ts retained in the

new package. Th is is the signature benefi t of all coopera-tives, which recognizes the member’s ownership in the Co-op by off ering a fi nancial return on patronage in profi table years, without risking the Co-op’s fi nancial security.

Th e board has been working on this project for over a year. Th ey held 3 member forums to discuss the proposed changes, wrote articles in the Kootenay Co-op’s monthly newsletter “On the Table” and brought the changes to the Annual General Meeting in September.

Th e new package is being enthusiastically received by the majority of members as they familiarize themselves with the upcoming changes, due to be launched November 1.

New Look For Th e Kootenay Carshare Co-op!

Th e Kootenay Carshare Co-op has experienced some exciting changes this fall; it has launched its new website: www.carsharecoop.ca and purchased a new vehicle – the Carshare’s fi rst SUV!

Since July, Kootenay Carshare staff have been work-ing with local graphic design team Frolix to get their redesigned website up and running, and as of Friday October 15, it went live for the public to use! “Th e new website will answer all your questions about how car-sharing works, give you the lowdown on the vehicles and breakdown the initial and monthly costs of membership,” says Kooteney Carshare Co-op Manager Colleen Matte. Visitors will also fi nd interactive features like a trip cost calculator and emissions calculator; they can link to the Carshare’s social media pages, and sign up for newsletters. Businesses will fi nd a section that details how the Car-share’s Community Company Car program can improve their bottom line and reduce their liabilities. Funding for the website came from a grant from the Cooperative De-velopment Initiative.

Th is fall, the Carshare purchased their fi rst SUV – a four wheel drive Jeep Liberty. Th is is a slight departure for the organization, they have always had cars, trucks and vans to meet their member’s diverse needs, but this is their fi rst sports utility vehicle. “Th e decision to purchase the vehicle was made based on feedback from the Carshare’s membership,” says Matte. “Members indicated they were interested in more four wheel drive vehicles with higher clearance that could transport passengers comfortably into the backcountry.” Th is vehicle will help reduce emis-sions by allowing members to access the vehicle only when they need it and use more fuel effi cient cars when they can. Th e new SUV is located on Chatham Street near the corner of 2nd Avenue in Fairview.

Th e Nelson Refu-gee Committee is hoping to bring two young Burm-ese Karen women to Nelson to start a better life.

Hsa and Htoo grew up in a camp on the Th ai-Burm-ese border. In spite of the constant persecution of Karen people by the Burmese re-gime, and the ever-present dangers at the make-shift camp, they have educated them-selves and speak some English. However, without a family the two cousins, both in their early twen-ties, have no one to protect them.

Hsa and Htoo are looking for-ward to being sponsored to come to Canada. Please help us to raise money while having fun by attending our burger, beer and e n t e r t a i n m e n t event at Finley’s Bar and Grill on Friday, November 18 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Learn About Th e CRT Th rough Touchstones Nelson

Nelson’s Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and His-tory is opening its doors and waiving admissions from Wednesday, November 8 to Sunday, November 13 in an eff ort to help area residents learn more about the Colum-bia River Treaty (CRT) and how it relates to local dams, reservoirs and lake levels.

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is hosting a display at the museum as part of its ongoing eff orts to raise awareness and understanding about the Columbia River Treaty and will be sponsoring admissions at the museum for fi ve days prior to a free information session on Monday, November 14 at the Nelson District Rod & Gun Club.

“CBT’s primary role with respect to the CRT is to act as an information resource for Basin residents,” says Kindy Gosal, CBT’s Director, Water and Environment. “Work-ing in partnership with the museum is a great way to help people learn about our past and think about our future with re-spect to the CRT.”

Th e CRT is an international agreement between Canada and the United States to coordin-ate fl ood control and optimize hydroelectric power generation on both sides of the border. Under the 1964 treaty three dams, Mica,

Duncan and Hugh Keenleyside, were constructed in Can-ada. A fourth dam, Libby, was constructed in Montana.

“Th is is a great chance for anyone to come to the museum and explore the permanent exhibit on the second fl ood that includes screening of three videos about the Columbia Riv-er Treaty,” says Touchstones Director, Leah Best.

On Monday, November 14, CBT is hosting a free infor-mation session at the Nelson District Rod and Gun Club at 801 Railway Street. Th e open house begins at 2 pm, free dinner from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm and the evening presenta-tion starts at 7 pm. Hall Moving Sale will be held at the Memorial Hall (723 Ward Street) in Nelson on Saturday, November 5 from 1 pm to 4 pm. Admission is $5.

Th e history of fashion tells the story not only of what women wore, but it gives a glimpse of what Canadian life was like through the years. In the 1970s, Th e Canadiana Costume Society of BC and Western Canada encouraged the preservation and exhibition of clothing worn in Can-ada. Bonnie Holland (also known as Bonnell,) was an active member of the Society and collected clothes from 1900, 1910, the roaring 20s, the 1940s – furs and all – as well as some rock ’n roll outfi ts of the 1950s. As a Vancou-ver fashion designer and then a Nelson craft sperson, she continued to collect beautiful clothing pieces. Era to Era

is the show and sale of this large clothing collection. Th is autumn, the Anglican Memorial Hall has been of-

fered for sale. In tandem with the fashion show and sale, many of the hall pieces are being sold – mission benches, oak pews, older wooden stacking chairs, selected English china and many other items.

Th e Era to Era event will be on Saturday November 5th, 1 – 4 pm. Th e $5 tickets are available at the door at 12:30. Browse the sale items until 1:30 when the show will start. At 2:30, light refreshments will be served and the sale com-mences.

Fantastic Results For Harvest RescueFor the past three months, 26 local volunteers have been

busy picking spray-free fruit trees in our community for the Nelson Food Cupboard Society’s Harvest Rescue program.

“10,000 lbs of fruit was harvested from over 100 trees, which were registered by 66 land-owners”, states Loray Alexander, the program Coordinator. Harvest Rescue has many benefi ts, as the harvest is divided into thirds – which goes to the volunteers, the land-owner and the cus-tomers of the Nelson Food Cupboard.

With a very limited program budget and only 3 picking ladders, it was the work of dedicated volunteers that made this success possible. Alexander expresses the hope that more funding for Harvest Rescue becomes available in the future, as it “would allow for a longer picking season and

the purchase of an additional ladder and picking bags. I was so impressed and grateful for our volunteers’ hard work, dedication, and high standards”.

Heartfelt thanks go to those who registered their trees, many of whom had bear problems and gave up their por-tions for the cause. Th e Baker Street Wednesday Market local farmers and Natalie’s Fruit Stand off ered additional donations of almost 5,000 lbs of fresh veggies and fruit - another record breaking amount for the program!

Th e Nelson Food Cupboard is a barrier-free emergency food service accessed by around 1000 individuals per month. Th e Harvest Rescue program is an integral part of meeting a fresh fruit and vegetable policy – ensuring that customers receive a variety of healthy, nutritious foods. Most recently, he has co-authored with Merrell-Ann Phare Ethical Water, Learning to Water What Matters Most, a book that in part explores lessons from trans boundary water reform between the province of Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

“We can learn from a clear path for reform outlined by policy makers, Aboriginal governments, community leaders and the general public in the Northwest Territor-ies,” says Sandford.

Sandford will speak at noon-hour Rotary and again at Touchstones Nelson at 7 pm. Th e FLOW tour is primarily funded by the RBC Blue Water Project and locally sponsored by Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art & History. Admis-sion to the event is $5 for members, $7 for non-members.

Joining Sandford in a local discussion panel at the Touchstones event will be Gerry Nellestijn, Coordin-ator for the Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society and Eileen Delehanty Pearkes, author of Th e Geography of Memory.

Empowering Women With Knowledge

An empowering step women can take is to invest time in learning more about the complex and sometimes confus-ing world of fi nancial matters. Regardless of income level, every woman can benefi t from more knowledge about her options and what fi nancial services and programs are available. Th is project, funded by Status of Women Can-ada, aims to ensure that women have access to fi nancial information that is relevant to their circumstances.

To support women in this learning process, Habondia’s Community WISH Project has teamed up with Peggy DeV-ries, a Certifi ed Financial Planner, to deliver free seminars geared to mature women on fi nancial and estate planning.

Th ese participant-directed seminars, designed to an-swer the questions participants bring, are an opportunity for women to gain more understanding. Topics in the past have included information about the diff erences between government programs available to low-income and senior women; RRSPs, TFSAs, RDSPs, and RRIFs; determining fi nancial needs aft er retirement; various types of insur-ance; planning ahead in the event of widowhood; steps to creating a fi nancial plan; and other questions as asked by the participants.

Women are invited to bring their fi nancial questions to this two hour seminar at the Crawford Bay Commun-ity School library on Tuesday, November 8 from 4 pm to 6 pm or to the Kaslo Seniors Hall on Th ursday, November 10 from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Free presentation to private groups of more women is also available by pre-arrangement. Please contact the WISH of-fi ce at 250-352-6688 to arrange dates, times and locations.
