Nelson, Area E and F Bear Aware has now lent out 9electric encing setups to residents to protect chickens and

ruit trees rom bears. Properly installed and maintainedelectric encing does discourage bears. Eleven people at-tended our recent electric encing workshop (sponsoredby the CB and RDCK). We now have no more encers tolend or this season, but you can still contact Bear Aware([email protected]) or in ormation and as-sistance with encing.

Garbage is still the primary bear attractant in our areaand across the province. Nelson now has a wildli e at-tractant bylaw (3198 Waste Management and Wildli eAttractant Bylaw), that among other things, restricts thepresence o curbside garbage to the hours o 5 am to 7pm on the day o collection. In addition, garbage mustbe stored in a wildli e resistant structure or garbage con-tainer. Please contact the city or more in ormation andcheck the city website to read the actual bylaw.

Bear Aware has worked with Nelson Farmer’s Supply to bring a sample bear-resistant can rom Rollin’s Ma-chinery into Farmer’s Supply. You can order similar orlarger cans rom Rollins through Farmer’s Supply. Tereare other bear-resistant containers available and you canvisit www.bearaware.bc.ca to fnd the best option oryour needs. Tese cans have been properly tested againstgrizzly bears. Tey provide an option or people unableto store garbage in a secure structure between collectiondays. ODB Tanksgiving DinnerOur Daily Bread’s Annual Community Tanksgiving

Dinner is here once again. Te turkey dinner with all thexings will be held on Monday, October 10, 5 pm at 812

Stanley Street (Our Daily Bread Hall) and will be a kick-o or the Nelson Action on Homelessness Week.

Te Nelson Investor’s Group has donated $250 to thiscampaign; some o their employees will be volunteeringto serve and cleanup at the dinner, as well. Tis is theeighth year that the Nelson Investor’s Group has been in-volved with Our Daily Bread’s Annual Tanksgiving Din-ner. We rely on our volunteers and donations to providethis Tanksgiving meal. Last year, there were over 150people in attendance rom the community.

Our Daily Bread, located at 812 Stanley Street, runs vedays per week year-round and is almost completely run

by volunteers. Our Daily Bread is a barrier- ree environ-ment that is open to anyone.

Currently, Our Daily Bread receives no governmentunding and relies on donations rom community mem-

bers and corporate sponsors. Our Daily Bread has part-nered with S.H.A.R.E. (Supporting Humanity and Re-sponsible Ecology) Nelson, one o Nelson’s second hand

urniture stores, and receives $18,000 in annual sup-port rom them in order to continue its operations. It isthe hope o the management o S.H.A.R.E. Nelson thatS.H.A.R.E. Nelson will be able to completely support OurDaily Bread rom its pro ts as well as other humanitarianprojects in the near uture.

Many o the guests who come to Our Daily Bread havecommented that without the meal provided, they wouldbe unable to survive. For many, this meal means that they don’t have to choose between paying the rent and eed-ing their amilies. Without the support o the community,Our Daily Bread would not be able to provide this basicneed or the people o Nelson.

Kaslo ‘Boys Town’Mentorship Program

Have you heard about the new boy’s program beinglaunched by North Kootenay Lake Community Services?It’s called Boys Town!

Tis October, Boys own is kicking o a 1-year groupmentorship program that will host weekly a er-schooland weekend activities or boys. Te outcome is to have

un, gain li e and success skills, strengthen sel -esteemand encourage each other. Te program has room or upto 12 boys rom Kaslo and area or ages 9 to 13.

Te program is also looking or adult mentors with arange o skills and interests who want to contribute to thisproject by teaching a skill or simply joining in the un andhelping out. Tere are already o ers or bike rides, soapstone carving, and woodworking!

Boys own will be acilitated by NKLCSS’s new YouthOutreach Boy’s Mentor, Brodie Whitney. Brodie is a localresident, ather, mentor and li e coach and is very excitedto see this project going ahead.

Tis initiative is part of a larger project created by theKootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative andis funded by the Community Action Initiative. Tere are 5boys’ mentorship programs, all happening under the sameumbrella, in Kaslo, Nelson, Castlegar, rail, and Rossland.
