Dr. Patrick Walsh's Top Ten Ways toPrevent Prostate Cancer

    1. Eat fewer calories or exercise more so that you maintain ahealthy weight.2. Try to keep the amount of fat you get from red meat anddairy products to a minimum.3. Watch your calcium intake. Do not take supplemental dosesfar above the recommended daily allowance. Some calciumis OK, but avoid taking more than1,500 mg of calcium a day.

    4. Eat more fish - evidence f rom twolarge studies suggest that fish canhelp protect against prostate can-cer because they have "good fat"particularly omega-3 fatty acids.5. Try to incorporate cooked toma-toes that are cooked with olive oilwhich has also been shown to bebeneficial, and cruciferous vegeta-bles into many ofyour weeklymeals.6. Eat more soy. I doesn't get more simple than that.7. Top off your meal with green or black tea.

    8. What about supplements? Although selenium and vitamin Ehave been shown to reduce the frequency of prostate cancerin smokers, the correct dose is tricky. Too much can beharmful. Until we know more about the value of these sup-plements, do not take more than you'll find in a multivitaminpreparation.

    9. Eat an apple a day, or better ye t, an apple, an orange, a bowlof vegetable soup, tomatoes, broccoli, and maybe some cornon the cob. Try nature's packaging of phytochemicals in-stead of the health food store. Studies have shown thatsimply eating an apple a day gives your body far more anti-oxidant and cancer fighting help than taking megadoses ofvitamins.

    10. Finally , eat ing all the brocco li in the world, though it maymake a difference in the long run, does not take away yourrisko f having prostate cancer right now. If you are age40 orover, if you have a family history of prostate cancer, or Afri-can American, you need more than a good diet can guaran-tee. You need ayearly rectal examination and PSAtest.

What is Prostate Cancer?Prostate cancer occurs when cells within the prostategrow uncontrollably, creating small tumors. Theterm "cancer" refers to a condition in which theregulation of cell growth is lost and cells grow uncon-trollably. Most cells in the body are constantly divid-ing, maturing and then dying in a tightly controlledprocess. Unlike normal cells, the growth of cancercells is no longer well-regulated. Instead of dying asthey should, cancer cells out live normal cells andcontinue to form new, abnormal cells.Abnormal cell growths are called tumors. The term"primary tumor" refers to the original tumor; secon-dary tumors are caused when the original cancerspreads to other locations in the body. Prostatecancer typically is comprised of multiple very small, primary tumors within the prostate. At this stage, the disease isoften curable (rates of 90% or better)with standard interventions such as surgeryor radiation that aim to remove or kill all cancerouscells in the prostate. Unfortunately, at this stage thecancer produces few or no symptoms and can bedifficult to detect.

What are the Symptoms? If the cancer is caught at its earliest stages, most menwill not experience any symptoms. Some men, how-ever, will experience symptoms such as frequent, hesitant, or burning urination, difficulty in having anerection, or pain or sti ffness in the lower back, hipsor upper thighs.Because these symptoms can also indicate the pres-ence of other diseases or disorders, men who experi-ence any of these symptoms will undergo a thoroughwork-up to determine the underlying cause of thesymptoms. Visit the Prostate Cancer Symptoms sec-t ion for more information.

How is Prostate Cancer Treated? There are aw ide variety of treatment options available for menwith prostate cancer, including surgery, radiation ther-apy, hormone therapy andchemotherapy, any or all ofwhich might be useda tdifferent times dependingon the stage of disease andthe need for treatment.

Consultation with all threetypes of prostate cancerspecialists-a urologist, a ti~ ~1.w.M-;-Prostate cancerradiation oncologist and amedical oncologist-willoffer the most comprehensive assessment of the available treat-ments and expected outcomes. Visit the Treatment section formore information.

How Can I Prevent Prostate Cancer? The ultima te goal of prostate cancer prevention strategies is toprevent men from developing the disease. Unfortunately, despitesignificant progress in research over the past 16 years, this goal hasnot yet been achieved. Both genetic and environmental risk factorsfor prostate cancer have been identified, but the evidence is notyet s trong enough to be helpful to men currently at risk for devel-oping prostate cancer.By contrast, some success has been seen wi th strategies that candelay the development and progression of prostate cancer. Studieswith finasteride and dutasteride, which are typically used for menwith the noncancerous condi tion BPH, have shown that they mightplaya role in slowing the development of prostate cancer ; ongoingstudies will help to define the optimal role of these agents. In the meantime, diet and lifestyle modifications have been shownto reduce the risk of prostate cancer development and progression, and can help men with prostate cancer l ive longer and better lives.

Personal Story: Bobby SmitBobby Smith acquired several lasting traits duringhis play in the National Football League (NFL). Peseverance, mental fortitude, and maintaining anupbeat attitude were just a few of the qualities thformer pro defensive back needed in order to besuccessful football player.Decades later, far removed from seasons playedfor the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions, Bobbcalled on his football field experiences for encour

agement after being dianosed with prostate cancer in 2001. Suddenly tformer NFL player wasfaced with the challengeof his life-not from anopposing wide receiver, but from a cluster o frenegade cancerouscells. It was the scarieschallenge he had everfaced.

Former NFLsafety andprostate cancer survivor "I wasn't 100 percent aBobby Smithlot of the time back whenwas playing. I had to push myself both physically

and mentally. So, I think that helped me in ma in-taining the right mindset when it came to fightingcancer," says the Los Angeles resident, comparinghis football career with his response to cancer."Being posi tive was important then and during mordeal with prostate cancer. I would say to mysel'I can get through this'. When you're hurt [on thefootball field], or in the situation of prostate can-cer, you have to take on the attitude that you canget through it... that with early treatment you canlead a productive life."
