An old technology that could redefine business

Page 2: Push To Talk And Direct Connect2

Push-to-Talk technology dates as far back as the telegraph (Dasilva et al. 2006). The technology is quite simple, one simply pushes a button and is instantly connected to someone tuning in to the same channel or frequency.

So, why how can this technology help to improve our current distribution?

Issues with cellular phones – Wireless signal acquisition issues – A low

or bad quality signal can make communication nearly impossible.

Time consuming – the average length of any cell-phone call is 3 minutes.

Missed calls or malfunctions can make a cell phone call go unnoticed.

Conference calling can be difficult.

Push-to-Talk is making simple communications easier and more efficient.

Connecting with delivery drivers and warehouse personnel has never been so seamless

25 people are able to seamlessly coordinate using Group Connect, a term for direct conference calling-style communications.

Push-to-Talk relies on older technology that is much more stable. Nextel has an entire network devoted to “Direct

Connect”, Nextel’s version of Push-to-Talk. Instead of a direct two frequency sender-

receiver connection (ordinary cell-phones), push-to-talk uses one frequency for both.

Push-to-Talk uses “packets” for sending and receiving. Low signal has no effect on communication quality as long as “packets” can be sent and received.

Implementation is more cost effective than other land mobile radio devices.

Networks for PTT are already functioning within some cellular service providers.

Picking a provider and supplying personnel with handsets (typically a cellular phone) are the only things required.

Training is simple and would only require a user to be familiar with the functions of several types of already available cell phones.
