Purpose of Competition

1. To bring Apostolic Church-schools together for fellowship and topromote academic, social and spiritual qualities.

2. The Christian school movement has grown greatly. The Apostolic music program, as well as other competitive events, are unlike any other competition programs.

3. For the past many years, Christian Education has grown at an unbelievable rate. Barriers have been broken because of this educational approach. The sharing of ideas and assistance has generated co-operation among many people which will continually build and develop our Christian school program. Utilizing this same concept, we have the greatest opportunity of pulling down walls, crossing bridges, and building a revival atmosphere with rallies, fellowships, and competitions. Let us make each year a rewarding experience of competition and fellowship with old and new friends.

Awards

First, second and third place winners will be recognized in each event category. Winners will generally be recognized during morning devotions the day after competitive event has been judged.

An Outstanding Student Award will be given to the top ten students in the entire competition. The award will be based on individual points earned. Points will be: 5 for gold, 3 for silver, and 1 for bronze.

Quantity of awards given for an event will be listed on that event’s rule page. The general rule will be 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze for each category. The exception will be team events. The number of medals given on team events will be limited to number of entrants allowed in a particular category.

ENTRY GUIDELINES FOR COMPETITION

1. All entrants must be students of the Church school. See exception below.

A. No student participants may be married or have children

B. All student participants must be full time Christian school studentsattending the Christian school during regular Christian school hours.

C. Must be enrolled in local Christian school by January 15th to beeligible to compete.

D. Student entrants at age 18 must have their 18th birthday fall withinthe school term (September 1- June 1). Students who are 18 on September1 of their senior year, and remain full time students of the Christian schoolmay participate.

E. EXCEPTION FOR ENTRYApostolic evangelist’s children, Apostolic home-schooled children, andApostolic children in a denominational Christian school where there are no

Apostolic Christian School may participatein individual events only. There will be no medal points given to a particularschool for winning. There will be no participation on any school team

activity. Each child will pay a $10.00 registration fee at the time of registration and will also pay the regular $6.00 per event fee. Children

who were removed from a local Christian school, cannot participate in competition. Children in an area where there is an Apostolic Christian School may not compete as an individual student. 2. Entry form completed and mailed by assigned date.

3. Contestants must follow guidelines of events. Contestants understand they willbe disqualified if they do not follow the rules of events and/or rules of competition.

4. Display total Christian spirit at all times.

5. Boys:A. Long pants in all events. Pants and socks must meet. No skin on leg may

be exposed.B. No shirts that display underarms.C. No attire that might display a questionable character. The administration

reserves the right to question or interpret.D. No facial hair.

E. No chains on neck, only watches on arms.

F. Hair off ears and collar. No rat tails.

6. Girls:A. Hair neat.B. No necklaces, earrings, bracelets, or chains.C. Full skirts and dresses, modest, middle of the knee. Hem should touch

floor when kneeling.D. For sporting activities, skirts or culottes that will touch the floor when

kneeling. Culottes must be cut with a flare to the leg so as to prevent themfrom appearing as walking shorts.

E. No face make-up or questionable tee shirts permitted. Administration reserves the right to question or interpret.

F. Blouse must not have a low neckline and not be sleeveless.

7. Contestant must be present for judging.

8. Judging forms will be placed with each entry in the events where required.

9. All sporting events will be closely supervised for discipline. Event official’s wordis final.

10. Selecting your active wear should be based on your physical size. We want to project a modest image at all times.

11. All entries on display to be judged at competition must be in exhibition rooms and ready by 6:00 PM the first day of competition.

12. It is the responsibility of each school to see that each student’s entries are registered and displayed in the right category. School will be given until 6:00 PM the first day of competition to correct any mistakes in paperwork. After 6:00 PM, all entries that are not entered into category on school registration sheet or are placed in incorrect category will be disqualified. Errors made by the office and not individual school will be corrected at any time during competition.

ORATORY OF BIBLICAL TEXT

The contestant chooses one topic and presents his/her arguments orally. Each contestant in Oratory must provide judges with a typewritten copy of the outline of oration. Outline must be in clear plastic folder with student’s name, ID#, school name, and school ID# clearly visible on the front.

Two age categories: 13-15 and 16-18

Only 3 students per category per school.

Maximum time limit is six (6) minutes. A five point deduction will be taken for each minute beyond six minutes up to a maximum of 10 points.

Content of speech must be original and prepared by the contestant. Plagiarism of any kind will automatically disqualify the contestant. Contestant can not select a topic which would require them to practice an evil personality.

HINTS FROM PAST JUDGES

In oral arguments, the contestant simulates a lawyer’s summary of his side’s viewpoint at the conclusion of a case. For that reason, the actual content and logic of your presentation are more important than your delivery. Poor delivery can detract severely from a good outline. Your content should be based on scriptural opinion or emotional appeal. In making your delivery, speak deliberately and persuasively without being antagonistic. At the same time, you should also try to use variety in movement, gesture, and voice inflection. Persuade—do not preach.

BIBLE QUIZZING

Bible quizzing is a team effort. A team may consist of five to seven members, but only three may perform at a time. Three team members meet at the quiz table, each having access to a buzzer.

All questions will be 10 points each. Questions will be numbered 1-25, and each judge will have a set of questions with which to follow along as the quiz master reads the questions.

There will be no conferring with one another, except whether or not to challenge and ten seconds to prepare an answer to a challenge.

The player who hits the buzzer first within five (5) seconds of completion of question and causes the light to come on will be recognized and allowed to answer the question. A player will have five (5) seconds to start his answer after being recognized and thirty (30) seconds to complete his answer. A player does not have to wait for the completion of the question to ring in but may interrupt the reading of the question and be recognized to answer the question. If the question is answered correctly, his team will be awarded the appropriate points.

If the question is answered incorrectly, the opposite team may challenge the answer. If the first team’s answer is found to be wrong, the quiz master will repeat the question for the challenging team. If the challenging team answers correctly, they will be awarded the 10 points. If the challenging team answers incorrectly, neither team will gain any points for that question.

If the buzzer sounds before the question is completed, the team who rings in first does not need to complete the question, they only need to give an answer. If they answer incorrectly, the question will be repeated in its entirety for the opposing team.

After 25 questions have been asked, the team with the most points is the winner. Twenty-five questions asked will end the contest. If neither team has any points after 25 questions, both teams will be disqualified. In the event of a tie at the end of 25 questions, the contest will be decided by sudden death with one final question. If a team reaches 100 points before the 25 questions have been asked, that team wins the contest.

Quotation questions must be answered word-for-word without any paraphrasing.

A team may have three (3) time-outs during a game. These time-outs can be to pray, substitute or be coached. A time-out can only last one minute.

Each team must provide one adult to work in one of the above named official capacities in games other than games in which their team will participate. Person selected from each school must be well versed in the rules.

SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION

Scripture memorization will be divided into two age categories: 13, 14,15 and 16,17,18.

Only the King James Version of the Bible will be acceptable for memorization. Each contestant must submit a typewritten copy of scriptures by book, chapter, and verse to the judge before beginning. Typewritten copy must be in easily read type, double spaced, and be not less than a 14 point font. Verses may be copied from a King James Version computer program such as Quick Verse.

Example:Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one

accord in one place.

Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty

wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Scriptures must be said in the order typed, but do not necessarily have to begin in Genesis and end in Revelation. The order may be of the contestant’s choosing. Contestants may skip a scripture and continue with their typewritten list, but the skipped scripture may not be returned to at a later time.After contestant announces the book, chapter, and beginning verse that he/she will recite, the contestant will proceed at once with the recitation.Time allowable for delay is fifteen seconds. One help can be given in ten verses, and whenever two helps are required in a ten verse spread, the student disqualifies himself. The help may be a book, chapter, verse or word reference.

A minimum of 50 verses quoted successfully for younger age group must be obtained to qualify for a medal.A minimum of 100 verses quoted successfully for older age group must be obtained to qualify for a medal.

No reference notes of any kind may be used.

Student may only take a break for water, which will be provided in the room. If student is still quoting after one hour has lapsed, the student may, if desired, take a restroom break. Student will be accompanied by someone, other than parents, coaches, and peers. Break will last only as long as necessary. Students may not confer with anyone concerning their quotation and may not refer to any notes.

CREATIVE ESSAY WRITING

A contestant in this category chooses a Christian, social or patriotic topic and writes a PERSUASIVE paper. A good persuasive essay will use facts, arguments, examples, and illustrations that allow the reader to persuade himself of the truth he is reading.

The essay must have been written after termination of the national competition of the previous year and must be the original and authentic work of the student. Plagiarism of any kind will automatically disqualify the entry. The supervisor or teacher must require student authors to write a significant portion of the essay during school hours to verify authenticity. Only one essay per contestant is allowed.

The essay must be no less than 500 words and no more than 700 words. Essay must be typed, double-spaced, and on plain white paper. Type must be a standard 14-point font. No script fonts permitted. Three (3) copies of essay must be submitted. One copy must be in a clear plastic folder with the student’s identification number and school identification number clearly visible on the front.Bibliography is required with all three copies. The other two copies should have all proper information but must be stapled instead of being placed in a clear plastic folder. Bibliography is required with all three copies.

Three copies of writing entries must be mailed to competition office with judging forms no later than April 6th. The office will retain one copy, and two copies will be sent to judges. Writing events will be judged prior to competition time with score tabulated at competition. Competition office will notify each school by fax or e-mail of receipt of entries.

SHORT STORY

A contestant in this category shall write a fiction/truthful narrative with Christian, social or patriotic theme. Only one short story per contestant is allowed. The short story shall be not less than 500 words and not more than 1,000 words.

Short story entry must be typed double-spaced in an easily read style of not less than a 14-point font. No script fonts permitted. Three copies of entry must be mailed to the competition office no later than April 6th. All copies should be identified on a cover sheet by title with only student’s ID# and school’s ID#. One copy should be presented in a clear plastic binder and the remaining two copies should be stapled.

HINTS FOR WRITING A SHORT STORY

Have the story and its conclusion fully in mind before beginning writing. Decide what will be the basic conflict. Decide from whose point of view the story will be told.

Where will the story begin? Will some or all of it be told in retrospect? Do you want to plunge right in, or would you rather build up from an introduction?

How will you handle your story? Will a first person narrator simply tell the situation, or will someone else be telling the story?

Remember that your short story should contain situation, complications, climax, and conclusion. Be sure to dramatize important incidents, not simply narrate them.

Try to foreshadow what is to come. Leave hints which will perhaps take on meaning later. This is particularly important if you decide to try a surprise ending.

At least one or two characters should be developed fully. The reader should be able to know the character by the end of the story.

Plan how you will identify time and/or place. This is your setting. Are you trying to create a mood or atmosphere? If the setting is a major role in the action, be sure it is adequately described.

POETRY WRITING

The contestant must compose an original poetry composition with a Christian, social or patriotic theme. The contestant should keep in mind his/her purpose for the poem: Why is it being written and what effect is being achieved.

1. Limit one entry per student.

2. Poem may be a lyric poem, a folk ballad, a literary ballad, or a narrative poem.

3. Poem must have been written after the termination of national competition of theprevious year and must be the original work of the student.

4. Format

A. At least eight (8) typewritten lines

B. No more than thirty (30) typewritten lines

C. Must use typewriter or letter quality printer with no less than a 14 point fontNo script fonts permitted.

D. Variations from above line limitations must show evidence of very carefulattention to word choice and structure, plus a strong thematic basis.

5. Copies

A. Three copies of writing entries must be mailed to competition office no later than April 6 th . The office will retain one copy, and two copies will be sent to two different judges. Writing events will be judged prior to competition time with score tabulated at competition. Competition office will notify each school by fax or e-mail of receipt of entries.

B. One copy must be in a clear plastic folder with student’s ID#, school #, and age category clearly visible on the front of EACH copy. Two copies must contain proper identification information and be stapled.

SCIENCE PROJECTS

1. Character Portraits – a picture of an individual in an action or practice that portrays the nature of the individual. Character must be dominant feature in photograph.

2. Church Bulletin – Scenic

4. Animal – wild or domestic (birds, fish, dogs, deer, etc.)

5. Architecture – This should be an outdoor photograph. Can be any building or man-made object such as a statue, a fountain, a monument, etc.

6. Entries may be processed by commercial labs or by the student.

General Guidelines

NO ARTWORK SHOULD ATTEMPT TO PORTRAY THE FACE OF CHRIST. No color-by-number painting will be accepted. All work must meet competition standards as far as dress codes and suitable subject matter are concerned. No entry may exceed more than 3 feet in its longest dimension.

Presentation and Packing

Paintings on canvas should have some type of frame. Other work should be matted, but may be displayed without framing. A 3 X 5 card must be on back of artwork with the following information: student ID#, school ID#, and category.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

3. An instrumental sound track may be used. Sound track cannot have background vocal either natural, synthesized or digitized. Accompaniment will not be a part of the judging. No split tracks allowed. Vocals on sound track will be cause for automatic disqualification. It is the responsibility of each school to see that their music conforms to the rules.

4. No music may be played while marching in (Large Group). Judging and time begins when first participant steps on stage area. Testing of tapes and musical instruments will be allowed but is considered part of total 8 minute time limit. All music (except for Large Group) must be on cassette, CD or mini CD. No live music will be allowed. CD’s and mini cd’s must be accompanied by song directory. If tapes are used instead of CD’s, tapes must be queued up to proper place so delays in judging do not occur.

5. Each individual or group may only sing one musical piece. The musical piece may consist of a medley of songs but once the music starts there can be no stopping of one piece and the starting of another piece.

6. Director will only be allowed for large chorale. Solo, duets, trios & quartets may not have a director. Coaching from audience, either verbal or by hand signals, is not allowed.

7. Time limit of eight (8) minutes for all vocal entries including set up and performance. There will be a loss of (2) points for exceeding 8 minutes AND (2) points for every minute thereafter. Two timers will be used at judging table for LARGE VOCAL GROUP ONLY.

8. Vocal Solo – Only three (3) participants per school per event. Student may compete in category one time.

9. Vocal Duets, Trios, Quartets – Any arrangement of students may compete in each category one time. EXAMPLE: Bill, Sue, and Tom may sing in only one trio. Your school may enter another trio, but it must use three different students. Only 3 groups per school

10. Vocal Quartet – Must have four-part harmony to be considered a quartet. Before singing, each student in this category must announce their name and the part they will be singing . Only 3 groups per school. A student may only sing in one group.

11. Vocal Large Group – Only one per school. May not exceed 21 members. Over 21 members will cause disqualification. Only 21 medals will be given.

12. Microphones will be set up for Vocal Large Group. These microphones will have the same settings for all entries. Once competition begins, no adjustments will be made to

microphone levels.

14. Directors and/or students may not move microphones. It is the director’s responsibility to place singers around the stationary microphones.

No judges will be sitting together during events. The judges will sit in three differentarea.Judges will not confer during the events. Each entry will be judged according to the judging form and handed in to be averaged by the office.

INSTRUMENTAL RULES1. Arrangement must be a religious or patriotic theme or may be a combination. If the patriotic selection is from a

country other than America, some form of written documentation must be submitted to judge.

6. Instrumental Solo Keys – No accompaniment will be allowed.

7. Instrumental Solo Woodwind and Brass – These events do not need an accompaniment, but if you choose to have accompaniment, it must be only piano or organ and must be on a cassette tape. NO LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT WILL BE PERMITTED.

8. Instrumental Bass Guitar, Stand-up Bass, and Percussion – A cassette tape has been sent to your school if you requested it on your pre-registration form. This tape will be the same for each school and will give you the music with which you are to play along.

9. Instrumental Small Group – Small group of 2, 3 or 4 members may play their instruments whether instruments are all one type or mixed.

10. Instrumental Large Group – Only one group from each school will be permitted. Maximum of 18 members per group. A group with more than 18 members will be disqualified. After instruments are in place you willOnly have (1) minute to tune instruments & begin music selection. Your (5) minute time limit will begin.

11. Time limit of five (5) minutes for all instrumentals. After 5 minutes (2) points will be deducted and (2) points for each additional minute that exceeds the 5 minutes will be deducted..

11. In solo categories only one instrument per student may be played.

12. In all instrumental categories of solo or small group only three entries in each category per school. Please Note guidelines for large group

Guidelines for Music Judging

Sprints – Long Distance – RelayNo starting blocks or spikes are to be used.

C. Judge’s decision will be final.D. Each team will wear the same color t-shirt during all running events.

Cross Country (Course will be laid out prior to run by Administration)

1. Boys: distance not to exceed 2 ½ miles. Only 3 per school permitted to run.

2. Girls: distance not to exceed 1 ½ miles. Only 3 per school permitted to run.

This run is not for the inexperienced runner. It is necessary that training go into this event. Students should be advised against running in this event without prior practice.

3 No Ipods, headphones, mp3 players are to be used at any sporting events.

Basketball

1. All players must be students of the Church-school. See Entry Guidelines for definition.

2. Display total Christian spirit at all times.

3. All fans, coaches, team members and cheerleaders must understand they will be disqualified if they do not follow the rules.

4. Games will be played in double elimination according to the brackets displayed.

FREE THROW

1. Three (3) students per school per category permitted to compete.

2. Event is open age 13-18.

3. Each participant will be allowed three warm-up tosses.

4. On the fourth shot the student must announce to the judge whether he/she wishes to count shot as number 1 or number 4. If a student makes all three warm-up tosses, those tosses can be counted as part of their total.

5. Competition will consist of 10 shots. The person making the most shots will be declared the winner.

6. In the case of a tie, shots will be taken in rotation with each participant taking one shot at a time. This will be a sudden death play-off. There will be no warm-up shots.

7. All participants must wear gym shoes.

VOLLEYBALL

CRITERIA

Structure

Navigation of Site – The site should be easy to use and navigate. User should know where he is and have the ability to get to another location in the site with ease.

Creativity – The site will be evaluated for creativity in the areas of uniqueness, content, approach to the material and method of engagement.

“Logical” Connection – The site must be logical and make sense to specific users. What may be logical to one user may leave another totally lost. For example: A site developed for teens would be very different from one for retirees, just as one for travel is very different from one on finance.

Engaging – The site should be attractive, pleasing, interesting, and beneficial. The time an average user will give is a matter of seconds unless it engages the viewer visually and mentally.

Elements (Variety and Appropriateness) – The site should contain enough variety to hold interest while maintaining an overall consistency which reflects the purpose and desired image of the site. It should conform to the Biblical values and overall competition guidelines regarding appropriateness of subject matter, substance, graphics, etc.

Browser Friendly – The site should be fully functional on multiple browsers and viewable on as many computers as possible. Several browsers are in wide use; however, the older the browser that can access your site, the less robust the elements and the more limited the creativity.

Graphic Design – The site should follow generally accepted Internet standards regarding presentation. Some of these regard font styles, spacing, overlay, and other aspects of the presentation. (There are helpful sites on the Web to learn about these items.)

Honor Society nominees will be entered along with other entries and fees of $25.00 paid along with all school entries.

All nominees will receive a nomination certificate. The winners will receive a certificate indicating dollar amount to be received. Money will be sent after verification of college attendance. If after 1 st

semester student does not attend college, money will revert back to Christian School Department.

Nominee will be interviewed by a panel of judges. All students interviewed will be asked the same questions.

Video

This category is an effort to help students become involved in church video outreach. If not already established, it would be a good idea to start a video club or workshop to teach and train.

1. Group event: 1- 5 members per video.

2. Maximum of three entries per school.

3. Time limit of three (3) minutes.

4. Work must be entirely that of the student or students. Work may be supervised by teacher.

5. Students may use mixing or editing equipment, but is not necessary.

6. Must be submitted on CD, DVD or Thumb Drive for judge’s viewing.
