Wanted spiritual reform.

John Calvin led revolves against England church.

Gave rise to Protestantism

WHY ARE THEY DIFFERENT?

They believe the Bible is God’s true law

They were extremely strict with religious practices and beliefs

Their beliefs became laws and customs

WHY ARE THEY HERE?

Came to get away from the persecution in the parliament in England.

WHAT ARE THEIR GOALS?

Purify the church

Create the society that everyone is responsible to God

Examples include:

Constantly working to be good to be chosen for the next life

Either go to heaven or hell

Wealthy were blessed by God

If guide lines are not met strict disapproval and discipline

HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT SABBATH DAY? Known as the Lord’s day

It’s a time to worship

Even have songs of praise

PURITAN LIFE

Encouraged by bible to create literature and poetry

Focused on children education

To honor God have to prosper for success

Wanted conversion not repression

ACTIVITIES

Not allowed to read elegant well formed scriptures

Could only read allowed literature

Children had to be intelligent

Could only worship certain ways

TOLENRANCE

They banished any non puritan people from the society or forced them to conform to the religion

No tolerance policy
