What makes these soaps so special....... Have you searched for a natural soap that doesn‟t strip the skin? Did you know that the natural oils form a protective barrier on the surface of the

skin & some harsh commercial soaps can strip these oils, rendering your skin unprotected from the elements making it prone to premature aging

& drying.

High quality glycerine soap is a far gentler approach to the skin than many commercial soaps. But the really special part of this is that you

have made it yourself!

Unleash your own inner creativity, control what you add to your soap bases, create beautiful pieces of art, it‟s up to you. No dangerous chemicals, no threat of lye burns, no weeks of waiting for cure times, you can make soaps in the morning and have them ready for use of gifts in the afternoon. Welcome to the world of Melt and Pour Soaps. Your soaps will contain beautiful natural ingredients & therefore leave the skin‟s natural oils in tact leaving you protected whilst feeling smooth & supple. As you develop your skills your soaps will transform \even further and may progress from standard bars to works of art – For around $1 you can make beautiful gifts or perhaps even start a new business or add to the one you have - lovely also for children & the elderly. RenascentCollege are here for you (in Australia) with all the supplies you need to get you started and continue to experience artistry levels. We even have in person classes and free youtube tutorials. We can‟t wait to get creative with you! MANY MELT & MOLD STYLE SOAPS ARE NOW AVAILABLE: A lot of these are made very cheaply with all manner of chemical. We use the purest

ingredients available to ensure a high quality bathing experience. Do not think all lines in this style are of similar quality.

The creation of the Renascent Soap products

This soap came into creation for us after the founder of RenascentCollege (Lesley) spent a full 12 months trying to clear up a skin concern that turned out to be merely sensitive skin to the common chemicals in soaps. She only uses the RenascentCollege soap now & has absolutely no concerns at all. As well as being a great place for all your supplies, RenascentCollege is also a natural therapies college and centre for wellness and well-being. We have had clients with many varied skin conditions (including eczema & thrush) that cannot generally use soap who trial the different bases and find the base that best suits them and their skin type. We are delighted to offer you several varieties to choose from.

The essential / fragrant oils are beautiful and can be varied depending on your mood, the fragrant oils are delicious & terrific fun (a favourite shower is with strawberry & poppyseed soap). Whether you create standard soap bars or you allow your imagination to run wild and create using cosmetic mineral shimmers/mica, milk bath, floral botanicals and dyes, you will have fun and create useful delightful gifts.

We are certain you will love it. – Great personalised Gift ideas!

Congratulations on beginning your Natural

Soap Making

You will need: Renascent melt & pour soap base (your choice from our great selection)

Renascent Fragrant Oils / Essential Oils / Essence Oils

Pure Pigment Dyes (Don‟t use food colours)

Soap molds

Heat source – eg – cook top / microwave

Botanicals (if you wish to add petals / herbs to your soap) *Optional

Mineral Shimmers / Micas to give a luxurious glow *Optional

Alcohol Spritzer (to prevent a slip between layers)

Silk Petals (to make guest soap petals- dip each in melted soap, dry and place in a dish for individual guest soaps, use & toss away the petal when finished – no more mucky guest soaps) *Optional

Firstly we will discuss how to make your soap

and then some of the benefits and other options

available

Step 1 – Preparing the area: Take your RenascentCollege MP (Melt & Pour) Soap base. You will need a heat source. This can be a microwave, pot on the stove, crockpot, bain marie or double boiler. This can be a smaller saucepan inside a larger one or a stainless steel bowl on top of the sauce pan. If using a gentle heat source you can put it straight in to in a pot or in a heat proof container in a microwave. If using a microwave (all vary in heat) for over 400gm of soap base, try around 1 minute on medium high, then stir & pop back in oven if required – your soap should not be hot enough to steam or smoke. When its nearly ready, try 10 second bursts. If you are melting a small amount, begin with 10 seconds. 1. DOUBLE BOILER: Make sure there is some water in the base of the

double boiler 2. DIRECT HEAT SOURCE: Place your soap base in the pot or container in

the heat source

Page 5: Pure, Natural Soap, Fun, Delightful fragrances Great Gifts

5

3. Roughly chop up the desired quantity of soap you wish to melt and place it in the top of the double boiler (away from the water) or directly in your pot / microwave container.

4. Over a reasonably low heat, allow your soap to melt, gently stirring as you go

5. If using a microwave, take away plastic food containers are good for melting in.

*If it is not hot enough, it will begin to set as you pour it, it may appear your soap has “seized” or clumped up, this does not generally happen with the RenascentCollege bases, hence it is probably that it is setting rather than seizing, just heat it some more to fix this. *Too hot, your soap will bubble and foam, you will get small bubbles all through it (making clear soap now look opaque) and you may quickly evaporate your fragrance. Your soap can be melted again once or twice if this happens. Let it set and add more fragrance and melt more gently. * A quick fix for the „bubbles‟ concern may be to give the soap base a couple of sprays of isopropyl alcohol (available from chemists and hardware stores) to break the bubbles and stir gently, this often fixes the cloudiness if caused by bubbles. Each time you remelt your soap it will remove some of the water and provide a firmer (more long lasting) soap, however as you have evaporated the water away, you will have slightly less soap. You may like to add a little water as it remelts. RenascentCollege ones should be fine for a few remelts. Need to melt a lot of base: A good idea is to melt it in batches rather than all at once, cut up your soap base, pop it in the microwave and heat for 1 minute, have another container available. Pour the melted soap into the second container and pop the unmelted base back in for another minute, keep doing this until it is all melted. This will ensure you don‟t superheat any of the soap causing problems, if by the time you get to the end of your melting process, you find the soap is starting to firm up or has a skin on the top of it, gently stir and put the entire melted lot of soap base in the microwave for 30 seconds. This will give a good even temperature and avoid problems that can be caused by overheating.

Step 2 – Add Colors / Fragrance:

Once the soap has melted you can add colors, fragrances, buttermilk powder or florals/botanicals if desired.

Ensure that the soap is gently heated as the hotter it is the more rapidly your fragrance will evaporate.

Page 6: Pure, Natural Soap, Fun, Delightful fragrances Great Gifts

6

Add a few drops of your chosen fragrance / essential oil(s), smell and apply to your own preference. *Take care – if you take a deep breath and your oils are evaporating, you will inhale them and this can be most uncomfortable.

Add a few drops of your chosen Renascent Soap dye, you can mix the dyes to achieve different colors.

Alternative colors can be used (but should not be used), such as food grade colors, however the colors may not „fix‟ to the soap as well, causing people to slightly dye their skin on using the finished soap. Also certain food grade colors will fade in different lighting, eg – certain colors fade when exposed to sunlight, others when exposed to moonlight. Over time food dyes will „bleed‟ into the color next to them also. The RenascentCollege soap dyes have been especially formulated to blend well and remain true in soap making, making them perfect for layering and you don‟t need to use too much. *Take care – you will only need a drop or 2 for lighter colors, you can always add more.

Step 3 – Add Botanicals:

If you wish to add botanicals or flower petals, gently mix them through. (See further suggestions for this, later on in this booklet). *Remember, botanicals will sink to the bottom of your mold in most cases and if you use a lot of very fine botanicals, they can become caught in body hair when using the soap and create an unpleasant experience. Gluggy botanicals like oats, may clog up the drain as they are used – take to add only a little. Some will float, others will sink and some especially rose petals may go brown in your soap over time.

*Handy RenascentCollege tutorials can be found for free on youtube under “RenascentCollege”

Page 7: Pure, Natural Soap, Fun, Delightful fragrances Great Gifts

Step 4 – Add Shimmers / Additives:

Lots of additives are available for your soap making including: Shea Butter, Coconut Oil (these can sometimes stop the lathering of your finished soaps), Milk Bath Powders, Clays, Exfoliants, including French Milled Rice Powder and French Milled Oatmeal (to nourish the skin) *Organic French Milled additives are available through RenascentCollege

If you wish to add shimmers, gently mix them through or paint into your

mould to produce a luxurious effect. (This can be done as a finishing touch to the set soap also) * We will discuss this further on in this book.

Step 4 – Molding:

Ladle or gently pour your melted soap into your mold / mould

Almost anything can be used for a mould. Silicone is by far the easiest and your soap will easily pop out in around 5-20 minutes with

no troubles. Silicone moulds can also create amazing artistry through their intricate designs

Page 8: Pure, Natural Soap, Fun, Delightful fragrances Great Gifts

8

Place aside to set. If you are in a hurry you can place in the fridge, however this may cause some sweating on their removal. Allow to set for at least 15 minutes or until cold to the touch & firm.

Single Pours or multiple Pours

In the previous image you can see a single pour going directly into a mould. This is the easiest way to make a soap bar, but you can add layers and multiple colours, we will discuss this further on in this book.

Pouring implements: You can use anything you are able to control, including a heat proof jug, plastic container or in the previous image you can see I have cut up a silicone cup cake tray and am using one of the cups to pour. These are super easy as you can bend them and get tiny details of coloured soaps in small areas, just be sure when you cut them to leave a rim on the cup otherwise you won‟t be able to hold it and may get burnt. Likewise for this reason I don‟t suggest you use silicone cup cake pans, they do not have the lip which you will require. You can put them directly in the microwave too, which makes them perfect for small pours of different colours or where they set easily.

*Larger containers or jugs will allow you mix up your base with colours and fragrances and pour a selection of soap bars all at once.

*Image from RenascentCollege YouTube tutorial on basic soap making

Step 5 – Unmolding:

Turn mold upside down and gently press in the centre, the soap should easily release and come away from the mold, leaving you with a shiny beautifully finished cake of soap. Allow to harden for at least a day and then delight in a beautiful bathing experience.

Step 6 – Finishing:

Taking your unmoulded finished soap, you have a few options to make it even prettier

If you used a loaf pan, you need to cut your soap into slices, RenascentCollege sell soap cutters that make this all very easy, otherwise you can slice with a meat cleaver, although this is rather dangerous

with a large blade, so take care (a soap cutter won‟t cut you if you slip) – a standard knife will make uneven wedge shapes.

Once you have sliced your soap into bars, you may like to run a RenascentCollege soap beveller along

the sides, this will shave off the edges and produce a nice bevelled shape.

If your soap has fine details you may like to use some soap paints to add small details of colour to your finished soaps. Soap paints are great for tiny details that you couldn‟t easily make from coloured soap. Standard paints are generally not body safe and should not be used on your soaps.

You can add special effects to your finished soap with the use of RenascentCollege Cosmetic Mineral Shimmers / Micas. They are so easy to use. Simply take a dry clean paintbrush, dip it into your shimmer powder and dry brush it on to your finished soap.

Congratulations - Your soap is now complete

I have had success in melting down a small amount of the Renascent melt & pour soap and then diluting it hugely with water. You end up with a liquid soap that is a bit 'goopy' but works really well and is incredibly

inexpensive. I made around 2 litres from 100 grams of soap

Pure Natural CLEAR OR WHITE MELT & POUR soap base in a 1kg block

(makes 10-30 soaps)

Additional Information…..

Adding Mica dust – Renascent stock a beautiful range of Cosmetic

Shimmers or Mica dust. It is very inexpensive and you only need a pinch. After you have melted your soap and added the colors and fragrances, add a tiny pinch and wait a few moments. Do not add more at this stage, it takes a few moments to show. You will notice a beautiful shimmer suddenly appear throughout your soap. If desired, you can add a pinch more at this stage to get the effect you desire. Alternatively – paint shimmer in mold to give your unmolded soaps a gold / shimmer appearance.

Soap Petals for guests – Renascent now stock inexpensive high

quality silk flower petals. These are lovely to use as guest soaps. Melt your Renascent Melt and Mold soap as usual, adding colors or fragrances if desired. Dip each petal in and place on a piece of tinfoil or wire rack to dry. When set (usually only a few minutes) you will have beautiful soap petals. Place in a dish for guests to take one and wash their hands. A lovely idea for parties or special guest soaps. Packaged up, these make very (inexpensive) special gifts.

Adding Botanicals – Many different items can be added to your

soaps. Try adding green tea leaves, dried basil leaves, herbs, dried flower petals. Anything you can imagine. It is important to dry the botanicals prior to use as they may otherwise become mouldy or rancid. *Remember, botanicals will sink to the bottom of your mold in most cases and if you use a lot of very fine botanicals, they can become caught in body hair when using the soap and create an unpleasant experience.

Why use the opaque Goats or SLS/SLES Free soap:

It is a very gentle soap base, kind to the skin & I find my skin feels moisturised after use. Looks terrific molded with the silicone molds & great with the soap transfers applied. I have had no adverse skin reactions using this soap for myself nor any of my clinic clients. My little

girl had eczema all over & uses only this soap & has no concerns any longer.

Join us in a basic soap making class or an advanced soap art

workshop!

What to do with all this soap – There has been a recent

awakening in soap making, however those who have looked into soap making from scratch will realise it can be complex and can be quite dangerous, especially with little ones in the house. With the Renascent Melt and Mold soap, you have a lovely quality soap that can be made in a few minutes, safely and with the addition of anything you like. It makes wonderful gifts, people just love a delightful soap and unlike some gifts that sit around forever, we all use some form of soap. Great fun for children to make and perfect for school fetes & craft days – the possibilities are endless, but most of all ………….. it is great fun, enjoy!

Different Molds – Many different objects can be used for soap

molds. The best choices are professional soap molds or chocolate moulds. The little sea shell chocolate molds are lovely for guest soaps, however, ensure people do not confuse them with sweets. (They look and smell great, but don‟t taste so good) Some chocolate style molds are now available for larger items such as love heart shapes – these are ideal for soap making molds. (Renascent stock a range of trays & 3D molds) A milk carton can be used to make a bar style soap. Pour your melted soap in as usual, leave it for the full hardening time - around 4-5 hours. Peel the milk carton off (once only use). Then placing the block on a chopping board covered with tin foil, I mark where I want my divisions to be and then use a soap cutter or cleaver to slice through. Generally if you are a little careful (and have a good cleaver) your cuts will be fairly accurate. Renascent now have chopping devices for this use. If you wanted to seriously get into the soap making this may be the way to go, however, I find for most people the basics work just fine. It is a really lovely sight when you have just unmolded about 6 different blocks of soap and sliced them up. The kitchen smells wonderful and there is a great self satisfaction that comes about with soap making.

FAQ Q. My soap has little „beads‟ of water all over it A. – If you melt it over too high a heat / too quickly, or cool too quickly (eg – freezer) when your soap sets it will form „beads‟ of sweat on the soap and ruin the appearance. Your soap can be melted again once or twice if this happens. This generally will not occur easily with the Renascent Soap Base. However, it does happen with all MP bases under the right conditions. Wrap immediately to prevent this occurring.

Page 15: Pure, Natural Soap, Fun, Delightful fragrances Great Gifts

15

Q. My favourite !!! How much soap will 1kg make? A: About a kg of soap!! If your molds take 100gm then around 10 soap bars (generally 10-30 soaps per 1 kg)

Q. My opaque soap is transparent A. At the melting stage your opaque soap may become slightly transparent, this is a temporary state and will become opaque once again on setting. Naturally transparent soap base remains transparent. Q. My clear soap is cloudy A. As you heat it it will become clearer, melt at a low temperature (too high causes cloudiness) if this occurs spray with isoproyl alcohol to release bubbles Q. How do I know how much dye to use A. Keeping this in mind, your colors (if used) will lighten slightly on setting so you may like to have them a little darker than desired at the melting stage. Just add according to what shade looks right. Q. When I unmolded my soap, it wasn‟t quite set & I ruined it A. Your soap can be melted again once or twice if this happens. Q. I bought a kit, do I need to purchase this full set again? A. Probably not, RenascentCollge supply 1 kg blocks of Melt & Mold soap, essential oils, fragrant oils, Molds, Colors and many other items, in person & mail order. If you wish to build a soap making business, you can even speak to us about a wholesale account. Q. My soap doesn‟t last very long? A. – The bases are pretty good now, however, they may use up more quickly than commercial soaps, if you wish to prolong it‟s life, ensure it is kept fairly dry between uses, do not leave in water or it will go slimey. If manufacturing professionally, a dehumidifier will dry the moisture out of your soap & greatly prolong it‟s life. Sadly, often the more „natural‟ soaps do disappear more quickly but they seem to be much kinder to the skin and personally that is a choice I happily make. I also use a RenascentCollege soap holder with a small magnet to keep my soaps dry in between uses.

However, it is recommended to melt your soap base at a temperature as low as possible, to prevent soap from getting water bubbles after demolding and also to prolong the life of your soap art mold.

Unmolding Times for Renascent Melt & Pour Soap Base: Most molds can be unmolded within 4 hours at room temperature, sometimes less (Smaller ones maybe a few minutes). If you are still having difficulties demolding after 4 hours, wait a little longer (preferably overnight) or place soap bar in the fridge for around 1 hour or in the freezer for around 15 minutes. This will greatly assist the soap to release from the mold and in far less time than usual.

We recommend you to pour your Renascent soap base into the molds, allow to stand at room temperature for 4 hours, then (if having trouble) place in the freezer for 15 minutes or in the fridge for 1 hr. You can then unmold and allow your soap to gently rest for it to come back to room temperature before handling. *Note: Do not allow your soap to go below 55-60°F or freeze as you will get water beads on the surface.

Cleaning your Soap Art Molds: After use, you may simply store them in a container or if desired rinse the molds in warm water. If you have added oils you may like to rinse in warm soapy water.

Pouring Layered Soap

Prepare your soap according to the Basic Melt and

Pour instructions.

Pour your first layer of soap. Wait approximately 15

minutes until a skin has formed on the soap.

Optional Step: Score the first soap layer with a fork in

several directions. If your first layer is clear, the score

marks will show. The scoring is not necessary but it

often helps to adhere the layers.

Spray your first layer with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol

to break up any dirt or oil clumps.

Pour your second layer of soap slowly to make sure

the second layer does not puncture through first layer.

Spritz with alcohol and wait for soap to harden fully.

Embedding Objects in Soaps

Make your objects to embed, following

melt and pour instructions. Do not

freeze them – let them dry naturally

Cut them into the shapes you desire –

or pop them out of their molds; if you

wish to store them, make sure you

store them in an airtight container since

melt and pour has a high percentage of

water in it and the water will evaporate

out

Melt your base; check your

temperature – is it steaming? This is

too hot. If you can’t stick your finger

in without it burning, stir and wait for

it to cool.

Pour your base into the mold. Don’t fill

all the way to the top (since you’ll be

adding objects to embed).

Spritz your embedding objects with

alcohol (to cut down on the oils from

your skin and to help adhesion) Spritz

the top of your base in the mold with

alcohol to cut down on surface tension

Place your embedding objects into the

mold.

Spritz the top of the soap for any

excess air bubbles.

Bath Puff Soap - Soap Recipe by T.J. Currey Ingredients

4 - 5 oz. clear melt and pour soap

"basic dome" 4 oz. soap mold

1 - 4" colored bath puff (this might take some

experimentation based on what you want, don't be

afraid to try a 3" poof)

4 - 5 drops of fragrance oil or essential oil

Directions

1. Start by cutting up small chunks of clear melt-and-pour soap & place in a

microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 15-second intervals until the glycerin has

melted. Let cool a bit and add scent.

2. Place bath poof in the center of the mold, holding the nylon handle upward (you

don't want to embed that!)

3. With your other hand, slowly pour glycerin over every section of the bath poof on

all sides. The bath poof will start to sink as the glycerin hits it - keep pouring all

around until you have submerged the bath poof. A bit of the nylon might poke out a

little bit. You can take a bamboo skewer and push it back down into the glycerin.

4. Let the nylon handle lean over out of the glycerin - it will make a nice little rope

to hold your soap.

5. Wait until glycerin has cooled and pop soap out of the mold. (Note: No color is needed as the bath poof acts as the color as you can see through the soap)

Cookie Cutter Soaps by T.J. Currey

Materials:

Scraps or bars of soap small metal cookie cutters small see-thru bags, netting, or tulle for wrapping 1. Slice a bar of soap into thin (1/8 to 1/4 inch) layers. 2. Position small metal cookie cutters and punch out designs. 3. Carefully push soap out and arrange on a pretty dish in the bathroom. You can take different colored soaps and make a pretty bag of them tied with a ribbon on top. * Note: May want to wear kitchen gloves while punching out soaps - the metal

cookie cutters are sharp.)

Double Color Melt and Pour

Soap

Prepare your base using the basic melt

& pour instructions found in this

booklet

Pour the first layer of soap into the

object you with to fill. You can pour

directly from your Pyrex dish for larger

objects, or use a dropper for finer lines

or details. Spritz with alcohol and

allow to harden until a layer has

formed. This layer's thickness will vary

depending on the surface area of the

first pour - use your judgement. You

don't want the layer to be too thin (and

thus give way). It's better to be too

thick than too thin.

Prepare your second color. Spritz the first pour

again with alcohol and pour the second layer

slowly. Spritz the second layer. Remember, some

molds don't allow for soap that is hotter than 140

degrees F (or they will warp), so if your base is

steaming or is too hot to touch, let it cool a bit

longer before pouring.

Allow soap to cool for 2 to 4 hours (or

overnight) before gently releasing from

the molds.

product - a

double-

colored

soap!

Have you searched for a natural soap that doesn't strip the skin? Did you know that the natural oils form a protective barrier on the

surface of the skin & some harsh commercial soaps can strip these oils, rendering your skin unprotected from the elements

making it prone to premature aging & drying.

High quality glycerine soap is a far gentler approach to the skin than many commercial soaps.
