I chose to analyze the Purdue Swimming Natatorium. I have learned a lot about swimming and the design of a pool area through out my fifteen years of swimming experience.

A pool deck is designed to link a team as one. The end of each lane is designed to hold team members to cheer on their fellow teammates during a race.

The “clock” is designed to make the team flow with ease during practice. It is used to keep pace and create structure. It is usually hung in an area that is easily located while in the water.

Team values are represented in the pool area itself. Cleanliness, the care of all equipment, and the showing of team pride are all values represented in a swimming pool.

The biggest challenge of a pool area is creating a comfortable atmosphere for the observers of the sport. You want to keep them out of the way of the swimmers but in close enough proximity to watch with ease and be close to the participants.

Concern for the athletes, coaches, officials, and observers is why the pool is designed the way it is. Space for all, with comfort and the ability to be a team.

A swimming pool is not just made to benefit athletes or viewers. It also benefits participants of other sports and incoming Purdue students. It gives a remission area for injured athletes to strengthen weak muscles, and it shows incoming Purdue students the bond athletes and other students share at Purdue. Overall, it says Boiler Up!
