The Parish Pump was started in 1979 toprovide a free community magazine in theparish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture,

combining the church magazine and village magazine. The Parish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and DebdenParish Council. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running themagazine by means of a donation, received annually. It is intended that themagazine reflects all aspects of village life within the parish and provides anopportunity for community matters to be raised. In addition to the informationrecorded in the magazine, our sister publication, the Debden Directory provides ahost of useful contact numbers for services ranging from bus times, local plumbers, doctors and restaurants. If you do not have a copy, please contact a member of thecommittee. The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interestingmagazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. Theclosing date for submitting material is: the 12 th of each month .The editors job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space availableand trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversialsubjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everythingsubmitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution.Non topical articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appearlater unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a betterchance of being published in full than longer ones. Please note that the present and past editions of the Parish Pump are nowavailable on line on the new website www.debden.org and that any material

    submitted will be automatically featured on the website. If you wish to have yourname and/or contact details (which must normally accompany any contributions)withheld from the printed edition and/or not to appear on the website, this must bestated at the time of submission. Copy for inclusion in the next edition should beemailed by the 12th of the month to;

[email protected] is also a folder in the shop for submission of written or typed copy. The current editors of the Parish Pump, who have the sole prerogative of theeditorial policy (so dont blame anyone else) are;Mike Fairchild [email protected] Lyons [email protected]

Advertising rates per issue are; full page 10.00; half page 8.00; quarter page or

    Re-dedication

I observed the two minutes silence at a Canadian military cemetery inNorthern France. I associate Remembrance Sunday with crispsunshine and a biting wind, the ground covered with autumn leaves.

And so it was in France as in Debden. The leaves were from mapletrees that now overshadow the unmistakable form of the trenches thatwind their way through former battlegrounds. But gone are the mud,the wire and the terror. Nature has reclaimed the trenches andcovered them softly with grass. The only noise was the wind in thetrees and the chatter of schoolchildren eager to see something of thewar their grandfathers never spoke about.

That same week-end children placed crosses beneath Debdensmemorial plaque inscribed with the names of servicemen, many intheir teens and early twenties, who are buried in the cemeteries Ivisited or remembered on the Menin Gate, a monument to 54,000officers and men who have no known grave. When I visited the MeninGate I happened to notice at the very top of one of its massive walls aplaque to an officer and four privates of Lord Strathconas Horse. This

was a private regiment formed by Donald Alexander Smith, 1st

BaronStrathcona and Mount Royal, a Scottish-born Canadian builder andphilanthropist who co-founded the Canadian Pacific Railway. Hecame to live in Debden and created Debden Manor. His daughter,Lady Strathcona, bequeathed to the village the land on which Debdenvillage hall now stands as a memorial to her son, the Hon RobertHenry Palmer Howard, killed in action in Flanders in 1915, aged 21.His name is one of 26 inscribed on Debdens memorial plaque.

Talking to others from the village who visited WW1 battlefields thisyear, I confessed to a feeling not so much of sorrow, more of anger atsuch a squandering of life. Next year is the centenary of the war to

end all wars and, if things go according to plan, an opportunity tore-dedicate Debdens new village hall to our own local heroes whodied for us one hundred years ago.

A village hall fit for today - and future generationsDebdens new village hall will be 60 per cent larger than the existing building. It will back on to the recreation ground and face towards the existing hall, which will continue to function during construction and then be demolished. Anew car park will have marked out spaces and dedicated areas for disabledvehicles and up to 20 bicycles. The village shop will be incorporated into theright hand corner of the new building, with a large frontage and generousspace for merchandise, storage and the Post Office.

Inside, the main hall will cover an area of approximately 160 sqm, roughlytwice the size of the present hall, with a lofted ceiling to make it suitable forsport and with enough room to seat up to 200 people theatre-style. There willbe a large kitchen and, importantly, a separate meeting room with its ownaccess, enabling two functions to take place simultaneously. There will beplenty of storage space.

Some of the detail in these drawings may change but the overall conceptreceived a resounding yes at the launch meeting. Analysis ofquestionnaires completed by most people showed strong support for newactivities such as drama and film shows and interest in carpet bowls and clubsfor gardening enthusiasts and senior citizens.

    Dear Friends,

I am probably not alone in feeling a rising sense of urgency as wehurtle at an ever-increasing rate towards Christmas. The shops arenow full of Christmas decorations, exotic ideas for presents andinteresting new Christmas puddings. It is very easy to becomepre-occupied with the sheer enormity of worldly business in pursuit ofChristmas perfection!

I suspect life was pretty busy too in Israel 2000 years ago. For onething there was the biggest census the country had ever seen everyone had to go to the town from which their family came. Foranother, there was plenty of ducking and diving to avoid confrontationwith the occupying Roman army. In the middle of all this, quietly andalmost unnoticed, God entered history as a human baby and sent outinvitations to a few select folk to come and see. Of course he invitedMary and Joseph. Then he invited some shepherds good honestdown to earth men, salt of the earth, the last people you would expectto see angels. Next he invited along some wise men from distantlands what a journey they must have had, and what dangers they

must have evaded. Finally he opens up the invitation to all and sundry that means you and me - and all because he loves us. Each yearwe are invited to come to the stable, to gaze in wonder at the Christchild, to give thanks and to let him into our lives. If we can do that, hewill love us and change us and through us he will change the world. The invitation is always open so come along and see!

Wishing you a very happy and peaceful Christmas and very manyblessings in the New Year.

    God bless you all, Hilary

Dear Pump Reader, The whole school raised money for Children in Need in a variety of wayson Friday 15th November. Each class collected as many 5ps as they couldin their special Children in Need Jar. Children came to school insomething spotty on Children in Need Day and donated 1. Many pupilsorganised their own fundraising events either in school or at homeincluding a sponsored 10K bike ride which raised over 500, sponsoredsilences which raised in excess of 173, a cake sale and a RocketLauncher which one pupil made at home and charged 20p to have a go.Some very innovative ideas! The class that collected the most 5ps wasClass 4 who raise 67.10. We will let you know the final total raised inthe next edition.

We were very pleased to be asked to take part in the Village Act ofRemembrance on Monday 11th November at 11am. Thirty eight year 5 and6 children took part. The ceremony began opposite Debden School withthe children standing in four lines with their crosses with members ofthe community to one side (below). The children said part of theExhortation, At the going down of the sun and in the morning we willremember them. After the two minutes silence the children andmembers of the community walked down to the war memorial where theceremony continued . Each child said the name of the person they wereremembering and placed their cross underneath the war memorial. Theceremony concluded with the Rouse being sounded. The children alsoenjoyed learning a little about all the individuals who had lost their livesin the wars through the potted histories that had been made available tothe school by the Royal British Legion. It is always a privilege to beasked to take part in the Village Act of Remembrance. All the childrencarried out their part in a very mature and sensible way. Contd. P 24.

    D E B D E N L O C A L H I S TO RY R E C O R D E R S G R O U P - In October Jeremy Collingwood gave a fascinating talk on a scholar,statesman and son of Saffron Walden Sir Thomas Smith- andconvinced us that he was worthy of a blue plaque to commemoratehis connection with the town.

Thomas Smith was born in Saffron Walden on 23 rd December 1513and educated at the Grammar School until he entered QueensCollege Cambridge where he became Vice Chancellor and, by thetime of Henry VIIIs death, Regis Professor of Civil Law. Hisacademic connections gave Thomas an introduction to court circles, was knighted in 1548 and was instrumental in obtaining a new charterfor Saffron Walden. He eventually became Secretary of State to KingEdward VI whom he persuaded to re-found the Almshouses in thetown. During Queen Marys reign he needed to keep a low profile butwith Elizabeth Is accession, Thomas became Secretary of State forthe second time.

His second wife was Phillipa, the widow of John Hampden ofTheydon Mount, who brought the site of Hill Hall to the marriage. Illhealth dogged his final years and on 12th August 1577, he diedleaving no legitimate heir but instructions and money for an elaboratetomb in the nearby Parish Church. Jeremys talk ended withquestions followed by light refreshments and a chance to talkinformally. The evening was such a great success that theCommittee are thinking of organising an outing to Hill Hall in earlysummer if there is enough interest from members and their friends.Watch this space.

    TANG TING TWINNING

THE STORY OF BISHNUGIRI Part 2 - A new life

You may remember Stuart McArthur telling me about Bishnugiri, the young Nepalese girl who had come to the health centre set up byTTTA in Tangting, with her feet terribly burnt from falling into ahouse fire when she was a baby. Clearly, she needed surgery andsome kind of prosthetic to enable her to walk. But bringing her to

Britain for surgery was out of the question - too expensive, too

complicated to arrange, and probably too disturbing for the girlherself. Was there nothing that could be done for her in Nepal? Stuarttakes up the story again.

'One of our supporters in Nepal is a wonderful woman called LaxmiGurung. When she heard about Bishnugiri, she got in contact with ahospital in Pokhara, the biggest town in that part of Nepal. GreenPastures Hospital is run by an international Non-GovernmentOrganisation (NGO) called International Nepal Fellowship. GreenPastures, established in 1957, was originally a leprosy hospital butnow specialises in rehabilitative surgery. It so happened that there

was a doctor there who specialised in designing and fitting prosthesesfor burn victims like Bishnugiri. Paul Roche was his name -Australian, I think. Laxmi sent him photos of her injuries. "Bring heralong," was Dr Roche's reply. So the village headman took Bishnugirito Green Pastures. She spent 52 days there, in which time she wasoperated on, fitted with a prosthesis for her right foot, and started acourse of physiotherapy. The cost of her treatment was surprisinglymodest and we managed because of the money we raise for the TTTAhere in Debden and Wimbish. That was this summer. Now she islearning to walk again. Green Pastures sent us some photos of her(see page 23 ). I didn't recognise her as the girl who hobbled into

    Tangting two years ago.'

It's a remarkable story of a remarkable girl and it shows how muchdifference what is to us a rather small amount of money - maybe lessthan you might pay for one of your more special Christmas presentsthis year - can make to the life of a young girl from a small village ina country like Nepal . Pond life: On the week before Remembrance Sunday it has beenestablished that contrary to stated practice at least 24 goldfish have beenplaced in the village pond. Fish have a detrimental effect on the insectlife. This last year there has been an increase in the numbers of dragon-flies, demoiselle flies and bats. The principle purpose of leaving the pond tofend for itself is so that this activity can increase. Unfortunately due to theinconsideration and selfishness of an individual this has set back theecological balance. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 states:-

The Act contains measures for preventing the establishment of non-nativespecies which may be detrimental to native wildlife.

If it is necessary, action will be taken against those perpetrators whocontinue to flaunt the established policy of retaining the natural habitat.

Table tennis: You are all most welcome to join us for table tennis onThursday evenings in the village hall. We have just about enough room fortwo tables (which will be the case until the new hall is built when we willhave room for a couple more) and we play each week during the wintermonths from 8pm until 9:30pm. You will be asked to pay 2 for the sessionwhich is always lively and provides excellent cardio vascular exercise aswell as a chance to chat when you are sitting out and catching your breath. The table tennis group has been going for some years now and wouldbenefit from an injection of new blood so if you think you might enjoy agame, (ignore the fact that they say being good at table tennis is a sign of amis-spent youth) do come along. Just turn up; no advanced warningrequired and if you have a bat, then fine, if you dont, we have spares..

    News from DebdenPentecostal Church

    Dear Friends,

All of us at the Pentecostal Church take this opportunity to wishyou a very happy Christmas and Gods blessing throughout thecoming new year.

The amazing miracle that took place 2000 years ago was thatGods own son came to this world as a baby, born in a stable. He grew up to become a man and was subject to all of the trials

and temptations we face but never did anything wrong. Thoughfaultless, he was condemned to die on a cross so that you and Icould be forgiven for all the bad things that we have done. Godraised his son to life and he now invites us all to accept hisforgiveness and a life of joy and fulfilment.

We do welcome everyone to come and join in the singing at ourcarol service which will be followed by the customary festiverefreshments. On Christmas morning we have a short service at10am, please feel welcome to join us to worship the One whowas born in a stable!

Looking ahead to next year we will not be holding eveningservices until the clocks change. Our first evening meeting willbe on 6th April.

God bless and Happy Christmas! Simon Gale

From your District Councillor 11 th November

Once again I was moved to tears with the simple but very movingceremony held by the Royal British Legion on 11th November. It is alwayswonderful to see the way the children from the School conduct themselvesand to know that it must bring comfort to the relatives of those whosacrificed their lives for us to live in a better world. Maybe the world is not aswonderful as they would have imagined but, seeing the futuregeneration conducting themselves in such a manner, it certainly gives ushope. It is good to see so many of the residents attending this simpleceremony and a thank you must go to Yuva for the very welcome cup of

coffee afterwards.Debden Green Cross RoadsThere have been a number of serious accidents along this stretch ofThaxted road in this last year, culminating with a car colliding with the Schoolbus and the whole area becoming impassable with the normal bus gettingcaught up in the melee. I appreciate that it is an uphill struggle but I willcontinue to try and get speed restrictions at the crossroads as it isobvious that there is a major problem there, and with the School childrenwaiting at the bus stop it is important that action is taken sooner rather thanlater. If anyone has any further information or wishes to support theattempt at a speed restriction please do not hesitate to contact me.

    The Village Hall

As I have learnt, to my cost, that any criticism however constructive it ismeant to be, is considered anti a new hall, and as I was asked not to attendthe meeting by one of the fund raisers (in case I was disruptive!! ) I felt, as akeen supporter of a new village hall for the Community of Debden , I wouldcomply. The feedback I have received from a number of people who didattend did concern me but I will keep my opinions to myself. All I will say isthat I will fight vigorously any attempt to put the cost of this hall on to theprecept. If people are happy for this to happen then all they need to do isset up a Standing Order to the Village hall fund. That way those who wantto can and those who do not wish to or cannot afford to will also beaccommodated. [ A response from New Village Hall Group appears opposite. ]

    CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR.

    New dynamic behind village hall

In line with the Pumps policy of right of reply to try to ensure both sides of adebate can be read in the same issue, we invited Stewart Luck, chairman ofDebden New Village Hall Group, to comment on Tina Knights remarks. I am surprised to hear that Tina received feedback that gave her cause forconcern following our very successful public meeting. If someone suggestedshe should not attend it was not done with our authority. If Tina had attendedthat meeting, the previous one in July, parish council meetings where thevillage hall was discussed or asked to see the presentation that explained ourproposals including our position on the precept she would realise there isno cause for concern. In our most recent grant application for more than260,000 we have stressed it has the backing of a community that has beeninvolved in an intensive consultation process over the last six months. I hopethat Tina wont keep her opinions to herself - even at this late stage. I repeatthe offer made at meetings and in the Pump for anyone to contact me withconcerns or support! Through commitment, enthusiasm, openness and atotally positive attitude, we have created a new dynamic behind the drive fora new village hall. Stewart Luck, (01799) 540866

Use it or lose it , say Mums and TotsDebden Mums and Tots say that numbers wit hin the group havefallen to an all time low and although effort s are being made toget attendance back up, the group may no longer be viablewithout more support.

Mums and Tots has run for many years and is a vital part of community life.It would be a real shame to see it close, says Erika Harrison, one of the

members. So if you are free on a Thursday and fancy a coffee and a chatand would like to get the kids out of the house, come and join us. You will bemade very welcome.

If numbers cant be brought back up, then unfortunately a possible closuremay be the only option in the new year, says Erika, adding: Use it or lose it,its as simple as that.

The first Debden Branch RBL annual dinner for many years took place inthe Officers Mess, Carver Barracks, when 51 members and their guestsenjoyed a three course candle-lit meal amidst the regimental silver. GuestSpeaker Col Callum Skeat, Royal Engineers Regimental Colonel (aDebden lad!), described the changes occurring in the Army in general andthe Royal Engineers in particular. Among other guests was LieutenantColonel Will MacDonald RE who has recently taken over the Support Unitat Carver Barracks.

Debden came into their Division 3A clash against Steeple Morden with highhopes as they were looking to continue their 7 game winning streak. Thisincluded their 3-2 win against Championship rivals Thurlow Royal Exchange in the John Ablett Cup. However, Debden found themselves in a deadlockagainst Steeple Morden in the first half with both sides failing to create goalscoring opportunities. In the second half the match livened up with Debden

pressing to find the matchs opening goal but failing to make their chancespay-off. With a quick turn of luck, Jimmy OMalley slipped up at the backgifting a chance to Steeple Morden that they took making it 1-0 to the homeside. Debden struck the woodwork three times in the last ten minutes, withZak Rayners free kick deflected onto the bar and out for a corner. But afterseveral corners and chances Debden didnt clinch it and Steeple Mordenwalked away with the three points.
