The Reeves family welcomes all buyers, non-buyers, online and in person friends to our 3rd Bar R Production Sale of 2021. It has been a difficult year for many people across the world and we consider ourselves lucky for our Ranch style of life has protected us from the Covid 19 virus. We have tried to put together a set of cattle for this sale which will excite the most critical Wagyu Breeder and at the same time attract commercial cattle buyers from other breeds to use our bulls to produce F1 calves for the market place. You will see the effects of our selec-tion put over Wagyu cows that are raised like commercial cattle, these cows calve on their own in very rough country with no calving assistance and they must have enough milk and maternal instinct to raise the calf. They are range calved and range-raised on their own. Bar R Cattle Co. started using the National Wagyu Sire Summary (NWSS) in 1999 and con-tinue to have confidence in these carcass EPDs. Since its inception the NWSS used progeny carcass data from contemporary groups with a reference sire in each group, they set the gold standard in collecting carcass data. The progress Bar R Cattle Co has made in our herd is due to the National Wagyu Sire Summary data. The cattle in this sale will have pedigree EPDs cal-culated from the actual EPDs of their ancestors. Bar R Cattle Co. has also been evaluating Wagyu bulls for 10 years with the GrowSafe system. This allows us to select animals for performance with emphasis on residual feed intake (RFI) as a measure of feed efficiency along with average daily gain (ADG) a measure of growth. We also use ultrasound data to evaluate rib eye area. Our program over the past 31 years has been based on a bull lease program which is on commercial heifers so the bulls need to be easy calving and all F1 calves are sold to feeders that are feeding for the Wagyu F1 market. This has driven our selection program to bulls that are easy calving and must produce the highest marbling and largest rib eye calves that are efficient for the feeder. We are proud of our Bar R Wagyu cattle and are confident they can compete with Wagyu cattle anywhere in the World. We hope you like the Sale!

• The offering has been monitored within the GrowSafe system. The GrowSafe system monitors residual feed intake (RFI) is used to determine the feed efficiency of an animal. RFI is the amount of feed an animal eats compared to what that animal should eat for maintenance and growth. Cattle with low RFI values are more efficient than those with high RFI values. The fact that RFI is considered to be independent of body weight and growth and it’s a moderately heritable trait, means it can readily be used for genetic selection purposes. • With this, each animal is rank (Rank) amongst its contemparary group (hightest being the best to lowest being the less efficient). • aDG is the animals’ average daily gain measured in lbs. (weight divided by the days of age).• F:G The amount of feed (lbs.) per day for 1 lbs. of gain

An EPD (Expected Progeny Differences) is simply a prediction of how future progeny are expected to perform in a partic-ular trait relative to other animals in the same genetic evaluation. The prediction is computed based on past performance information that has been reported to the American Wagyu Association. In much the same way we might predict the outcome of an upcoming athletic event based on the past performance of the two teams playing. Those predictions are even stronger when both teams have played similar opponents. Additionally, the more games they have played against the same opponents the more certainty we have our prediction is reliable.

The EPD itself does not imply “good” or “bad” performance. But rather, the EPD gives a prediction of the average differ-ence to expect in the performance for example between two sires. Furthermore, EPD are accompanied with an Accuracy (ACC) value. Accuracy is a measure of reliability regarding the EPD and is reported as a decimal number between zero and one. Higher accuracy values indicate more certainty that the EPD will show little change as additional information is included in the next genetic evaluation.

Within any group of animals, we observe a range of performance which we refer to as phenotypic variation. An animal’s phenotype is a function of its genetics and the environment to which it is exposed; Genetics + Environment = Phenotype. That portion of the phenotypic variation that is due to the genetics of an animal is called heritability (h2).

An EPD represents that part of the phenotype that is genetic and is heritable.For example, a group of weaned calves in a group may range from 400 to 600 pounds, only a portion of this phenotypic

variation that we observe in a group is due to genetics while the remaining portion of variation is due to the environ-ment. Heritability for weaning weight in the Wagyu population is estimated at 0.30.

Because heritability is not 1 for performance traits, a large portion of the variation we observe is due to environmental effects. Therefore, using the same cow herd and herd bulls each year often gives us very different performance results in our herd from one year to the next. For example, during a year of a drought weaning weights may be down but the fol-lowing year with more rain and better grass weaning weights are increased.

Because of differences we experience in environment from year to year or even across the fence line in the same season EPD do not predict actual performance but rather differences to expect when say using multiple sires in a breeding herd or between different cows in a herd when all are mated to the same sire.

Expected progeny differences are expressed in the same unit of measurement as trait which is measured. Birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, and maternal milk, are all traits that are expressed in pounds.

By taking the difference between the EPD of two sires the comparison of progeny differences that can be expected when mated to an infinite number of genetically identical cows in the same environment can then be made.

For example, if I selected two A.I. sires for breeding, one with a birth weight EPD of +1 and the other with a birth weight EPD of -1 and used them randomly on a set of commercial cows I would expect 2 pounds (the difference between -1 and 1) on average as the difference in birth weights for their calves. Certainly, there would be variation in birth weights among the individual calves, but the average difference by sire group would be 2 pounds.

When EPD are available for multiple traits the producer is given the opportunity to select for numerous traits that will have an economic impact on their herd profitability, even when those traits may be antagonistic to each other. For exam-ple, for the available suite of EPD available today for Wagyu producers you can select for increased weaning weight while identifying sires to keep birth weight in check. *EPD infromation from the American Wayu Assoc.

Bar R Shigeshigetani 30T is a large framed Tajima bull and his progeny show excellent carcass and growth traits. He is the most balanced carcass and performance trait bull that Bar R Cattle Co. has produced in the past 31 years. He ranks #2 for rib eye area, #13 for carcass weight, #1 for back fat and in the top 25% of Wagyu bulls for marbling in the 2017 Wagyu Sire Summary. This second generation Wagyu bull shows his popularity by having 581 calves registered in the American Wagyu Association.

National Sire progeny test indicates that Bar R Saburo 53Y is one of the top ranked carcass bulls in the American Wagyu Herd Book. This third generation bull ranks #1 in rib eye area, #3 in back fat, and #6 in marbling making him the third ranked mar-bling EPD bull free of genetic defects. The RFI (residual feed intake) data on 53Y showed him to be the top bull out of 18 sons of Bar R Shigeshigetani 30T when ADG (average daily gain) was indexed in he ranked number 2 in this GrowSafe trial. Bar R Saburo 53Y has sired 138 registered calves in the American Wagyu registry.

Grandson of Bar R Shigeshigetani 30T and son of Bar R 52Y. Bar R 52Y has produced considerable number of high selling bulls and females in Australia. Bar R Polled Zurutani D64’s breed composition on the pedigree is 98.44% Wagyu and DNA evaluation of his breed composition by BreedSeek results show him to have 100% Wagyu composition. In our 2017 GrowSafe trial Bar R D64 ranked number 3 out of 27 bulls for the RFI X ADG Index. He has 300 registered offspring and is becoming the most popular polled Wagyu bull used in the USA today.

Bar R E15 is a Bar R Itomoritaka 42Z son out of a Bar R Shigeshigetani 30T daughter which is a sire x dam breeding we like because of the folding of the excellent maternal and carcass traits from each side of the pedigree into one individual (Bar R E15). In our 2018 GrowSafe trial his RFI X ADG Index ranked him 4th out of 21 bulls. We do not have carcass data back on this young sire but have placed a lot of confidence in his ability to excel in carcass, maternal and perfor-mance traits and to imprint these economic important traits into our cow herd.

This son of Michifuku with 56 carcasses has vaulted to the top marbling EPD bull out of 109 bulls evaluated in the 2017 National Wagyu Sire Summary. Semen on this bull is difficult to obtain and the potential of obtaining a Sanjiro 3 sired heifer or bull either polled pure bred or full blood will be an excellent addition to any Wagyu herd.

This homozygous polled cow, Bar R E50, is sired by the very popular heterozygous polled bull Bar R 52Y; this bull has become the foundation bull for the Poll Wagyu program in Australia which is a syndicated company of Hammond Farms, Strathdale Wagyu and Mayura Station. They have data on over 600 carcasses indicating 52Y to be a very high indexing carcass bull. The Dam of E50 is a cow Bar R 13P her sire was Bar R Takasuru 1K; #18 for marbling and 12th for carcass weight. Bar R 13P has a record that few Wagyu cows have surpassed in she naturally weaned 12 registered calves so far in her life and she is still going. The most noted female calf was Bar R 5U which sold for $34,000 in our 2016 production sale. Bar R E50 is a half sister to Bar R 5U, that alone makes her a standout in the breed. The carcass superiority of her sire and maternal grandsire, her reproductive superiority, the homozygous polled genes and the docile disposition makes E50 an excellent cow to go into an embryo transfer program. She has never been flushed and is pregnant to calve her second calf in the fall, bred to Bar R Polled Zurutani D64 who is also homozygous polled.

A homozygous polled heifer sired by Bar R Arimura 30B, a bull that sold at 9 months of age for $30,000 for half interest while her dam, Bar R 27Y, sold for $25,000 at our 2018 production sale. The Bar R G17 heifer is quite docile, phenotypi-cally correct and is confirmed pregnant to Bar R Polled Zurutani D64, to calve in the Fall 2021. Her EPD’s indicate above average marbling, very good rib eye, very good growth and good total maternal traits. Not many chances to get a ho-mozygous polled Wagyu cow with this quality of EPD’s carrying a homozygous polled calf.

Jerry and Heidi Reeves started converting their small commercial cattle herd into a Wagyu herd in 1990. The past three decades have been dedicated to advancing the American Wagyu breed. between two ranches: Bar R Cattle Company and Blue Rock Cattle Company, both from the state of Washing-ton. Blue Rock Cattle Company sold their interest in BR2 Wagyu Genetics to Bar R Cattle Company. BR2 Wagyu Genetics LLC. is the marketing arm for semen and embryos produced by Bar R Cattle Company.Located in the Palouse region of Eastern Washington, we winter cattle on family land in the breaks of the

Snake River and lease land in the Idaho Mountains for summer pasture. We grow and produce our own alfalfa hay during the summer in order to feed our cattle through the winter.We believe in selective breeding based on data. We evaluate sires from progeny carcass data by leasing bulls

to large commercial Angus ranches who use the bulls to breed their heifers. The resulting calves comprise a contemporary group and are followed through to slaughter with carcass data collected. This has allowed us to select elite sires with proven superior carcass genetics. We use a reference sire in each contemporary group so a connectivity between groups can be used in calculating Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) by the Nation-al Wagyu Sire Summary. We have 60-80 bulls on lease each year and from these we select those that produce progeny with the highest quality carcasses.For the last ten years we have also been evaluating all young sires and select groups of heifers for residual

feed intake (RFI) and average daily gain (ADG) using a Grow Safe system at Snyder Livestock in Yerington, Nevada. We believe that RFI may be the best way to evaluate efficiency of cattle and we are committed to not only select for carcass quality, but also performance through increasing efficiency in our sires. We are one of few Wagyu breeders that evaluate sires so extensively.When genetic defects were able to be determined by DNA technology, we were able to eliminate sires with

these defects and replace them with sons that were free of the defects. We only sell semen on sires free of the genetic defects that can be tested at this time.
