How near Pullman
has come to realizing its ioo per centsafety ideal is shown by authorita-tive figures on the nation's accidentrecord. The National Safety Coun-cil and the U. S. Bureau of Censusaccounted for nearly 96,000 fatalaccidents in 1928. Automobile acci-dents cost over 26,000 lives; falls,
7,000; drowning, 8,500; and burns6,500. One-fourth of fatal accidentshappened to persons in their ownhomes.

1929 Only 114 railroad passengerslost their lives, and of these only 8were in Pullmans—drowned whena train crashed through a bridgeweakened b y a mountain cloud-burst. B u t f o r this, n o Pul lmanpassenger would have lost his life in1929; yet i n that year ha l f of allrailroad travel mileage was coveredin Pullmans, a n d Pul lman pas-sengers numbered just about one-third the country's population. Thatrecord is a characteristic showing;

Headboards between berths wereformerly removable; stored in the up-per berth by day. Heavy and cum-bersome, their handling was danger-ous, so they were fixed permanently
in place. The safety ladder to theupper berth hooks to a rod at theberth's edge so that i t cannot fall,eliminating other possible accidents.
The stepping box at car entrancehas saved countless accidents; en-larged for more solidity and widerfooting, its carpeted surface permit-ted feet to slip; so an anti-slip surfacewas applied. High heels sometimescaught in the hand-hold in the box'stop; so that was changed to the side.There briefly is the evolution of one

Railroad cars once disseminateddisease. Then Pullman dictated me-ticulous cleanliness; drinking water,certified by the U. S. Public HealthService, must not come in contactwith ice; sanitary drinking cups; up-holstery, linen, bedding, hangings,scrupulously clean, and cars vacuumcleaned.

Obviously, no equipment could in-sure safety without a trained, disci-plined, expert personnel. The safety-first tradition is bred in the bone;safety alike for passenger and em-ploye. Thus every employe in Pull-man car building and repair shopsmust wear goggles while on duty;visitors are provided with them. Eyeaccidents cost American industriesS50,000,000 a year, but in the Pull-man industries they have been prac-tically eliminated.
