Ilundo Small HydroPulling Power Out of Rivers in TanzaniaTo determine the feasibility of producing electricity from two rivers near Ilundo, Tanzania, a group of citizens of the region partnered with Coanda Power Systems to determine the feasibility of a small hydro project. Elgin traveled to Ilundo to gather hydrological data. While we were there, we had dinner at the village chief ’s house. At some point in the evening, the chief pointed to his ceiling. He had installed that light fixture and wired it to a light switch, ready for power. He said, “Hurry up.”After that initial fact-finding trip engineering on the two sites began in earnest. The proposed sites will employ a turbine and penstock along with Coanda Effect screens to maximize hydraulic potential while minimizing impacts on the environment.The project will supply the village of Ilundo with sufficient power while allowing the locals to potentially sell some of the power back to the electrical grid.
