Strengthen the network of individuals and groups working with issues affecting the lives of those with developmental disabilities and their families.

The Down Syndrome Community is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and

their families by focusing on education, communication and advocacy. Our service area includes the entire Puget Sound region and Western Washington. Our

The Bake A Difference Family Favorites Cookbook is the

culmination of a lot of hard work by our friends at Embassy

Suites Seattle Tacoma International Airport. It is full of

scrumptious recipes, contributed by DSC members and friends!

Sections include: Brownies & Bars, Muffins & Breads, Cakes

& Cupcakes, Candy & Desserts, Cookies, and Pies & Tarts.

There are 94 pages of fully-indexed recipes and the book is

filled with meaningful, professionally-shot photographs of our

self-advocate models and their families.

The cookbook was funded by a grant from Embassy Suites,

so every dollar we collect from cookbook sales goes directly to

support DSC communication, education and advocacy efforts.

Please support us by enjoying and sharing our cookbook! You

can order online, by visiting downsyndromecommunity.org or

you can call 425.228.3391 or email [email protected].

Books cost $20 each or two for $30, plus $5 shipping and

handling per book ordered. The books will also be available for

purchase at this year’s social events. Thank you!

A special thank you to the many volunteers. Greeters, face painters, registration table, those who set up and those who take

down; and those who work for months behind the scenes to make the Buddy Walk, the raffle and the FirstGiving site come

together. Please thank all these wonderful sponsors and volunteers for their support

Big Time Rush is a Big Time Thrill

Megan Schiedler enjoys opportunity of a lifetime to meet her favorite boy band

First there was the sound-check, where Megan was chosen to

ask one of the many questions from their fan club. Then we were

whisked away to the front of the line to meet them back-

stage before the Big Time Tour concert for a private photo shoot.

Megan spent 10 glorious minutes with the four young men:

Kendall, James, Logan and, of course, her No. 1 crush, Carlos

(standing to her right). They asked Megan all about her life and

were very engaging. It was an evening full of music, laughter,

dancing, singing and fun—a night that she will never forget.

I know I won’t, and neither will her mommy (Paula Schiedler),

who drove all the way from Lake Oswego, Ore., on that sunny

day in September to DO THE PUYALLUP and Get Your Happy On!

Submitted by: Louise Avery, Megan’s Aunt WeeZy Megan with BIG TIME RUSH at the Puyallup Fair

Savvy Estate Planning Thank you to the DSC Conference

Committee for a great day of

learning on Saturday, Oct. 20

More than 50 people joined us at the Blackriver

Training and Conference Center on Saturday, Oct. 20.

After a welcome by our President, Sean King, the audience was given a preview of the

day by DSC Board member Nick Kappes, who then introduced our speakers, attorneys

Larry Jones, Karen Thompson and Stephen Waltar.

The DSC would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the Conference Committee,

which was co-chaired by Anne Mullis and Sharon Dommermuth.

The Committee would like thank Kasey, from the Conference Center, as well as the

DSC Board and volunteers for making the day run so smoothly. Special thanks to Christina

and Brian, as our greeters and door monitors, and to Bobby at the registration table.

Our most sincere thanks also goes to our talented presenters who took time out of their

schedules to share their expertise and provide invaluable information. Thanks to our

attendees, the reason for our efforts!

Watch for information regarding our next conference on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, and

plan to join us.

Jones Thompson Waltar

Thank you to Larry Jones, Karen

Thompson and Stephen Waltar for

sharing their time, energy and vast

Pizza Party at Pazzo’s! On Oct. 27, Pazzo’s on Eastlake hosted their first DSC Pizza

Workshop.

Sixteen DSC self-advocates made their own pizza creations

from scratch to share with their families and learned some of

the mechanics about how a restaurant works.

Special thanks to Laurie, Missy, Jay and Jeremy of Pazzo’s

for making this fantastic afternoon a memorable success!
