This complex four-year construction work contracted by the Port Authority of Bilbao was carried out by UTE Cyes Infrastructure and Sacyr Construcción. This extension work on the dock will allow two ships to berth and will boost bulk carrier traffic. The port has not only gained 30,000 square metres of new area but also a more versatile use of the dockside. 40.11 mi- llion euros have been in- vested in the extension work of the 20-metre deep dock, 3.53 million euros of which was fun- ded by the European Union. EXTENSION OF THE PUNTA SOLLANA DOCK COMPLETED

330 extra metres for bulk carrier ships to dock

Work on the Punta Sollana dock in the in-dustrial area of the port has finished, extending it from 350 to 680 metres of berth.

40.11 mi-llion euros have been in-vested in the extension work of the 20-metre deep dock, 3.53 million euros of which was fun-ded by the European Union.

As an environmenta-lly-friendly technical in-novation, the Port Autho-rity has incorporated the use of high-performance

concrete with a density of up to 2.65 t/m3, using aggregate made from recycled black slag, an industrial by-product of the manufacture of or-dinary steel in Biscayan steel plants.

This is an innovative material which has also reduced the project bu-dget by approximately one million euros.

The industrial area of Punta Sollana - Punta Ceballos - Punta Luce-ro is the main industrial centre of the Port of Bilbao and last year it generated traffic of just over 18.8 million tons of goods, mainly liquid (94.6 %) and solid bulks (5.4%)

Chipolbrok, connection to St. Petersburg

Chipolbrok, whose gene-ral agent is Marinter (Pérez y Cía. Group), has added St. Petersburg to its con-nections with Bilbao, in the monthly sailings for its Eu-rope-Middle East-Asia ser-vice.

This service focuses particularly on general and project cargo, and it also connects Bilbao with destinations such as Antwerp, Hamburg, Porto Marghera, Jeddah, Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, Singapore, Jakarta, Laem Chabang, Shanghai, Dalian, Xingang (China) and Busan, among others

Noatum Container Terminal Bilbao, the operating company of the container terminal, has obtained approval for the extension of its concession by 12 more years, with a commitment to invest a total of 34 million euros during the period 2016-2036, with which it will be able to meet the forecast increase in container traffic over the coming years. Following the extension of the licence, the concession will run until 2049.

Of the 34 million euros committed, about 10 million will be invested in the period 2016-2018, of which six will go towards the purchase of yard cranes and a railway crane, and the other four million towards ins-tallations (new installation of automatic doors and access for lorry traffic, and the later expansion of the four existing railtracks from the current 450 metres to 550 metres).

With this investment, Noatum aims to develop its sea-land infrastructure in order to boost traffic ope-rating through the port of Bilbao and promote the intermodal traffic of perishable goods in refrigerated container between the south of Spain and northern Europe, within the overall strategy of moving closer to the Atlantic corridor and integrating Bilbao into the European network by 2030. It also aims to en-courage the use of railways, as well as to provide new access to the terminal for truck traffic in order to ex-pedite the reception and delivery of goods, and to ensure better use of the port cranes, by adapting the crane park to larger vessels

Bilbao, homeport of BOCS

The German ship-owner BOCS (Bremen Overseas Chartering and Shipping) has agreed that Bilbao should be its homeport for its operations in Spain. The company operates a con-ventional line specialising in transporting general cargo, bulk cargo, IMO cargo and project cargo between nor-thern Europe and the west coast of Africa, mainly to the ports of Tema (Ghana), Libreville (Gabon), Douala (Cameroon), Abidjan (Ivory Coast) or ports in the Repu-blic of Congo.

As a result, BOCS, whose agent is Insignia Shipping (Pérez y Cía. Group), has included the ship "Waf Passion", loaded by Consignaciones Toro y Betolaza, in the rotation on this regular line. The ship is 140 metres long and 21.5 metres wide, and has lifting systems with two cranes of 80 tons each, combinable up to 160 tons, as well a 45-ton deck crane

New equipment

OPDR y MacAndrews (Grupo CMA-CGM) have ac-quired 4,000 new 40ft hi-gh-cube containers, so that they can offer their custo-mers the transport of more cargo more safely in same space. The new containers can take up to five extra europalets added to the 30 that can be carried in a stan-dard 40ft container.

In addition, the extra hei-ght significantly increases the payload capacity ena-bling the carriage of heavier and bulkier cargo.

The extra room allows a precise and unitary arran-gement of the euro-pallets, avoiding open spaces that could result in slipping of the load, and the multiple anchor points inside the container ensure maximum securing of the cargo

The Vizcaya Transport Association (Asetravi) will host the conference

Transfer of tanks between ships

TORO Y BETOLAZA

Consignaciones Toro y Betolaza have participated in the unloading of gas tanks, weighing about 250 tons, brought to the Port of Bilbao by the ocean vessel Paula, a heavy lift of the SAL shipping Company. The ship docked at Bizkaia North pier, and the tanks were transferred to the alongside Muros ship of Murueta shipping Company, destined to the Naval ship-yard in Sestao. This type of operation is performed when the dimensions of the ocean vessel make it impossible to operate on the docks of es-tuaries or ports and require, if possible, even greater pre-cision than a conventional discharge to a dock, as it is a ship-to-ship transfer be-tween two floating bodies

Petronor now refines 40 different types of crude oil, allowing the Muskiz refi-nery, which operates at the maritime terminal of Punta Lucero in Bilbao Port, to get access to many different sources without tying itself down to any of them and to respond to the offer of the global market from a posi-tion of greater competitive demand.

The launch of the coke plant has made it possible, among other things, to sig-nificantly expand the range of crude oil. Each and every one of them are different, depending on their origin and their most significant properties; density, sul-phur content, acidity and freezing point.

However, in practice the varieties demanded by Pe-tronor hardly have any di-fference between them, with the greatest difference never exceeding 5%

Work on the new passenger terminal for cruise ships carried out by the Port Authority of Bilbao are going according to plan, and the building will be operational by the spring of 2017.

At present, the contracting group made up of Giroa and Viuda de Sainz is completing the work for the curtain wall that completely closes off the perimeter of the building from ground to deck.

The building will be fifteen metres high and 3,200 square metres. The flow of passengers and baggage will be separate from each other, and the embarkation and disembarkation areas will have independent routes and stairs. Pass-engers will access the ship or the terminal di-rectly, without having to set foot on the dock, thanks to a mobile platform or "finger".

The construction work has a budget of 5.5 million euros
