PRACTICE EXERCISE 1: FILTERS

Click on the "My NCBI" link in the top blue bar to return to the NCBI page. Focus on the Filters portlet. Click the "Manage Filters" link at the bottom of the portlet:

NOTE: If you have never activated Filters in My NCBI, your Filters portlet may be "blank."

Focus on the right hand side of the Manage Filters window. Change each of the radio buttons to see the choices, and then select the Filters that interest you. If you can’t find a filter, try searching for it. Ex. PMC or MEDLINE.

Remember that you can have up to 15 filters in PubMed active at any one time.

After selecting some filters, return to PubMed and run a Search of your choice. Practice applying the filters on the right hand side of the Search Results page…remember, two of more filters applied from the same category will be ORed; filters from different categories will be ANDed.

Next, add an NCBI filter to your “official” search in the general search box. This filtered search will appear in your History only after you click on the + sign next to the filter on the right and re-run the search (see image below).

After clicking on the plus sign, you will see the filter added to the General Search box. Rerun the Search by clicking on the Search button.

Apply a second filter from the list by clicking on another filter. Using this method, you can apply more than one filter from your NCBI list of filters to a search (this does not apply to Custom filters).

PRACTICE EXERCISE 4: Shared Settings

The NCBI Site Preferences section is where you will also find: Shared Settings. Shared Settings is an option that institutions can use to provide a customized PubMed experience for their patrons without being signed into their own My NCBI account. You would not want to use your own personal My NCBI account to do this. I suggest making a new account for your library.

To create shared settings:

1. Click on NCBI Site Preferences2. Click the Shared Settings link in NCBI Site Preferences.3. Select the settings you want to share.4. Save.5. You can then create a URL following this format:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?myncbishare=username, where the username isthe shared My NCBI account name.5. Use the URL to create a hyperlink or button for PubMed on your library’s web site.6. Ex. Duke University PubMed Shared Settings: https://mclibrary.duke.edu/7. Visit Duke’s website, locate the link to PubMed and run a search. Notice the filtersthat appear on the right, even though you aren’t logged into My NCBI.
