The depth of his ex- periences and the scale of operations he has overseen should prove useful in guid- ing the university through the financial challenges we are facing. His passion for Pitt State will serve all of us well, as he helps us apply the best business practices and financial management strategies to our work.” The president praised Steve Erwin, vice presi- dent for student life, and the search committee for leading the national search and the campus communi- ty for their participation in the campus forums at which they met each of the candi- dates. “The campus was highly engaged in this important search,” Scott said. Ball, a Pittsburg State Uni- versity alumnus, said he was excited about returning to work at his alma mater. “I had a terrific experience as a student at Pitt State, which prepared me well for my career and future,” Ball said. “ I’m excited to be joining the Pitt State staff and faculty in helping to create great experiences for the students of today and tomorrow.” Ball earned a BBA degree in accounting from PSU in 1987, graduating magna cum laude. He later earned an MBA degree in finance from the University of Mis- souri-Kansas City. Ball began his profession- al career as an auditor with Arthur Andersen & Co. in Kansas City. The bridge that will be closed is over Warren’s Branch on 675 Road, south of Peoria, it is going to be replaced. The closure is scheduled to take place on Monday Feb- ruary 13th. Bed advised that the road is expected to be closed for approximately 120 days. If you live in this area or travel through it regular- ly please plan an alternate route. Bridge to be Closed Next Week BAXTER SPRINGS - Bur- lington Northern notified local law enforcement that it would be closing their crossing on 12th Street in Baxter Springs on Wednes- day the 8th at 7 am. However, they neglected to inform them that they would also be closing the crossings at 10th, 14th and 19th as well as the one at 12th. So as a result the only open crossing was at 5th Street, which as we all know is a very narrow stretch for normal driving, not to mention being over- whelmed with wide loads and the normal traffic that 12th/166 is built to handle. Wednesday was even more bungled when the road clo- sure signs on the west side of town were not placed leaving tractor trailers to have to figure out how to turn around in residential areas and divert back to the “Y” (or whatever that mess is called) at 5th & 166. The situation was remedied ea- sly later in the afternoon as signs were placed at 4 Cor- ners and the cemetery. Work is expected to be completed this weekend, weather permitting (hope- fully they don’t decide to shut up shop to go fishing). Joking aside, the crews are working very fast. New Arrivals at the LibraryNo Bank Account? Where to Cash Your Refund Checks It’s important for residents to

feel safe, especially when in their own homes. With that in mind, Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves is providing the following tips to help protect citizens from potential intruders or burglars:•Always keep your doors locked, even when you’re home. •Have adequate exterior lighting on at night.•Trim trees and shrubs (especially those close to the house) so that they cannot be used as hiding places for intruders.•An alarm system is excellent for home security. Don’t forget to contact the alarm company on a regular basis to test the system. •Don’t store and extra key under the fl oor mat, nearby fl ower pot, or other similar locations. Burglars are familiar with these.•Keep a detailed inventory of your valuable possessions, including serial numbers. Take a video or photographs of your home possessions (your insurance company may be able to assist you).•IF YOU SEE SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY IN YOUR N E I G H B O R H O O D CONTACT YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT!Sheriff Groves, when recently

asked about the use of force or deadly force stated, “Each incident is evaluated on a case by case basis, examining its own unique set of facts and circumstances, and while I’m not an attorney who can provide legal advice, the law in Kansas

states ‘A person is justifi ed in the use of force against another when and to the extent that it appears to such person and such person reasonably believes that such use of force is necessary to prevent or terminate such other’s unlawful entry into or attack upon such person’s dwelling, place of work, or occupied vehicle.’ The law continues to say, with regards to deadly force, ‘A person is justifi ed in the use of deadly force to prevent or terminate unlawful entry into or attack upon any dwelling, place of work or occupied vehicle if such person reasonably believes that such use of deadly force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to such person or another.”“There is nothing requiring a

resident to retreat,” continued Sheriff Groves. In basic terms, a citizen is generally protected under the law if they are using the minimum amount of force necessary to protect themselves or their property. The force used should be reasonable in relation to the scenario.”“Many of our residents who

carry fi rearms, although they are not required to be permitted through the State of Kansas, still go through the Concealed Carry Training, which is a great opportunity for them to become more familiar with their fi rearm along with the laws governing when it’s legally appropriate to use. I would encourage anyone who carries a fi rearm, whether legally required to do so or not, to become familiar and profi cient in its use,” concluded Sheriff Groves.

residents preparing to fi le their taxes, Cherokee County Sher-iff David Groves encourages residents to be on alert for po-tential scams.“This time of year, thieves

and scammers work overtime, because they are preying on the fear of residents who may be dealing with the United States Internal Revenue Ser-vice,” stated Sheriff Groves.“It is not uncommon for res-

someone who appears to have an offi cial government email address or a phone call or text message from someone pos-ing as an IRS Agent. It’s im-portant for everyone to know the IRS will only make initial contact with citizens by offi -cial letter, should they need in-formation. If anyone contacts you by telephone, claiming to be an IRS Agent seeking infor-mation, don’t hesitate to hang up on them,” continued Sheriff Groves.“The IRS is very much aware

of many of these scam tech-niques, some of which include a phony IRS Agent calling a resident, off ering to settle their debt for pennies on the dollar if done immediately, and threat-ening to send the Sheriff to ar-rest them if they don’t comply. That’s not going to happen. I always encourage residents to hang up on anyone calling requesting personal informa-tion. Reputable organizations know better and you shouldn’t feel bad about hanging up on thieves trying to steal your

identity. Many times they may know a lot of information like your name and birthday but need your social security num-ber. Or they may know your social but not your birthday or address. Don’t assume that just because they already have a lot of information they are legitimate representatives of the IRS or any other organiza-tion. The piece of information you provide, could be all they need to complete thei r crime,” concluded Sheriff Groves.
