• What is it? March is National Women's History Month. During this observance, the Army pays tribute to the contributions of women in the building of this great nation. The National Women's History Month theme for 2018 is “Nevertheless She Persisted: Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination against Women.” This theme honors women who have shaped America's history and its future through their tireless commitment to ending discrimination against women and girls.

• What is the Army doing/has done? Army leaders across the department continue to set the conditions for all Soldiers and civilians to reach their full potential, and assign tasks and jobs throughout the force based on ability, not gender. All Soldiers, regardless of gender, complete the same training and must pass the same requirements to be awarded a military occupational specialty in any career field. As of December 2017, the Army had assessed and integrated more than 600 female Soldiers into Infantry, Armor and Fire Support Specialist occupations. For the first time in history, the Army has fully integrated women into all military positions. The contributions and achievements of women illustrate the strength of a diverse Army. The Army leverages the strength of the diverse force and ensures equal opportunity for all its members.

• What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?

Military recruiting is a highly selective, standards-based process. The Army is committed to providing the most ready all-volunteer force by selecting the best qualified Soldiers, regardless of gender, for each job in the Army. Female

Soldiers help to make the Army the finest fighting force in the world, and Army leadership will continue to shape policy that ensures the force of the future remains so. The Army continues to cultivate a climate of trust and respect to allow every Soldier to thrive and achieve his or her full potential.

• Why is this important to the Army? Women have served the U.S. Army since the Revolutionary War. Today more than 174,000 women serve in the Total Force. Women serve in every career field in the Army, and are critical members of the Army team. The Army is proud of today's women Soldiers, who serve with distinction and are role models exemplifying the Army's highest values. Women's History Month stands as a reminder of the strength the Army has gained through a high-quality diverse all-volunteer force. Join the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux community on March 29 to observe Women’s History Month. An event will be held at the Caserne Daumerie starting at 10 a.m. For more information, call DSN 361-5235 or +32(0)68-275235.u

Soldiers train to fight enemies in tactical combatives course

"One great thing about the Army is that you always learn something. Every day something new is happening. There is a new enemy so you have to keep up, and be one step ahead," said Army Sgt. Teshae McCullough. "You learn to fight enemies in different ways, because no fight will be equal or fair," she added. From Feb. 26 to March 9, the 39th Signal Battalion hosted the Benelux Tactical Combatives Course on Chièvres Air Base, Belgium. Fifteen students were enrolled in the course, all from different units and services of U.S. Army Garrison Benelux. The Tactical Combatives Course is the second level of the Modern Army Combatives Program. All of the students in attendance already completed the 40 Hour Basic Combatives Course. "The mission of the U.S. Army Combatives Course is to train leaders and Soldiers in close quarters combatives in order to instill the warrior ethos and prepare Soldiers to close with and defeat the enemy in hand-to-hand combat," said Army 1st Sgt. Jason Melton. According to Army Spc. Toure Mohamed, the training can improve his Soldier skills. "My reaction time will be faster, I will not be stuck in a situation and wonder what I should and should not do," he said. Day after day, Staff Sgt. Ernest Galloway, primary instructor for the course, and assistant instructors provided

explanations for the techniques addressed in the Basic Combatives Course instruction. They taught additional ground fighting techniques and introduced throws and clinches. TCC was also an opportunity for service members to talk about their experiences with other Soldiers. For Staff Sgt. Mario Huerta, the best moment was the tournament held March 2. "I got to put everything that I learned in this class, I got to put into use, from level one and level two. That's what I am taking away from this course," he said. Throughout the course, students are also expected to demonstrate basic combative techniques and learn boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai fundamentals. "They learn how to facilitate and execute a combatives tournament. Eventually the training will improve the Soldier's ability to conduct hand-to-hand combat in scenarios like room clearing and vehicle extractions with full combat gear," said Melton. After all the classes, Staff Sgt. William Chandler had more tools to use. "It (the training) gives you more experience and allows you to teach from experience," he said. "Once Soldiers are TCC-certified, they are responsible for reviewing platoon-level trainers' training plans to ensure quality control and safety. They will serve as assistant instructors for the Basic Combatives Course certification," Melton said.u

On March 1-2, 2018 the USAG Benelux Leadership Offsite Phase III took place in Schinnen with the senior managers from all locations. “The Offsite was a great opportunity to build on the strength of diversity within the USAG Benelux. “Everyone had something unique to offer, everyone had an insight that added value to the discussion, the organization, and the mission”, stated Master Sgt. Anthony Cassetta, Provost Sergeant in Chievres. For two days, the managers gathered to discuss garrison priorities and to develop recommendations to address different areas of the SWOT analysis. “The Benelux offsite provided me the opportunity to think big, outside of my own area of expertise, and focus on the big picture: how do we want to move forward with our garrison and successfully meet the mission,” said Patrick Maessen, Management Analyst in Schinnen. u

Fitness mobility may sound like an odd name for a class. Aren’t the two words the same thing? According to Jeffrey Bradford, recreation assistant at Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Chièvres Fitness Center on Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, mobility is the ability to move a joint through a full range of motion. His Fitness Mobility class, which starts March 12, aims at improving participants’ flexibility, and, ultimately, overall health. “Mobility is an important aspect of being healthy,” said Bradford. “Most people sit behind a desk for eight hours a day and put their bodies in wrong positions. By doing so, their muscles tend to shrink over time and that leads to back and knee pain, for example. Taking mobility classes instead of medicine is a natural and better way to deal with that pain.” Mobility has many benefits. It will decrease the chance of injury and keep joints healthy. “It is like putting grease in a joint to protect it,” Bradford said. The class will also help participants become stronger, because being able to move in a fuller range will help with other workouts such as weightlifting. Moreover, people can do mobility training whenever and wherever they want

as it does not take a big time commitment. “I want to educate people on the importance of doing it. All you need is five minutes,” said Bradford. There is gym equipment, such as a simple cross-ball, which can be used to release the tension in a muscle. However, people need to keep in mind that it will take time before seeing significant improvements. “You have to undo what you have done, and it can take months or even a year,” he said. The Fitness Mobility class be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chièvres Fitness Center. While the classes will help participants with improving their fitness ability, making small, but important, lifestyle changes outside the gym is also key. Bradford recommended that people make healthier diet choices, move around more throughout the day (such as increasing their step count) and stretch before and after physical workouts. His tips echo the Army Performance

Triad, which promotes sleep, activity and nutrition in improving Soldier and family readiness. In addition to the mobility class, Bradford will also instruct a Functional Fitness class on Monday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. For more information on upcoming classes and events at the Chièvres Fitness Center, visit www.chievres.armymwr.com/programs/fitness.u

The U.S. Intramural Sports program offers many annual team sports opportunities. Unit-level intramural leagues emphasize sports that promote group participation. Joining a league is a great way to meet new people in the community, build morale and welfare, and enhance the esprit de corps and camaraderie within a unit. At SHAPE, Intramural Sports is open for all active-duty members of any service, DOD civilian employees and members of NATO Forces. The SHAPE Intramural Sports program consists of basketball in March, volleyball in March and April, softball in June and July, and flag football in September and October. When one league ends, another begins. There isn't much down time. Even with personnel transitioning in and out of the SHAPE community, the program's schedule is streamlined across the Army. At the end of each season, an installation champion is selected. Local unit-level winners are sent to participate in the U.S. Army Installation Management Command-Europe Championships. Any participation gets a unit or battalion points for the Commander’s Cup.

The intramural basketball league started in February. The current standings in the championships league are as follows:

• 1st Place: 39th Signal, also known as Blue Devils• 2nd Place: Team Spartacus, also known as Greece• 3rd Place: 650th/AFNORTH, also known as Team Alliance• 4th Place: 424th Air Base Squadron• 5th Place: Cyber Tigers• 6th Place: Team Spain

Support your friends, family members, colleagues, or favorite team and join us for the basketball playoffs on March 17 at the SHAPE Fitness Center. Be on the lookout for our intramural volleyball league starting on March 20. The intramural sports program encourages participation by units and provides instruction, practice and competition opportunities for all skill levels. Want to find out about the intramural sports opportunities? Interested in participating in one of the free clinics to become a referee? Members of the Chièvres Air Base and SHAPE communities learned about the historical impact of World Wars I and II in the local area during a special visit to the Mons Memorial Museum in Mons, Belgium, on March 1. The trip, organized by Army Community Service’s Relocation Readiness Program, provided an opportunity for community members to feel more connected to the neighboring city as they explored the local area, used public transportation and learned more about the complex realities of each war. The Mons Memorial Museum is divided in two parts, both related to the military history of the city. The first part is a temporary exhibition, which changes every few months. The current exhibition shows what Soldiers and civilians used to eat during World War I. The second and most important part of the museum is a 1,200 square-metered permanent exhibition. This exhibition is divided in three parts itself: Ancien Régime, World War I and World War II. While viewing the displays, visitors can learn war history as well as the evolution and development of the city through times of war. Visitors should not expect to see tanks, planes or war equipment. The Mons Memorial Museum puts the emphasis on the daily life of Soldiers and civilians in wartime. It is also a great way to introduce children to the history of the wars

as it has modern and interactive exhibits. Lance Falagan, a U.S. Army counselor and therapist, was guided through the museum by the history specialist Alain Kicq. “I feel a lot closer to this city now,” said Falagan, who arrived in Belgium in January and didn’t know about Mons’ history and involvement in the wars. “I feel like I have discovered a treasure. I am just so happy to be here and share history. I would absolutely recommend this museum,” he added. For more information on the museum, visit www.polemuseal.mons.be/en/mons-memorial-museum. Many museums in Belgium, including the Mons Memorial Museum, are free to visit every first Sunday of the month. ACS has scheduled trips to the Mons Memorial Museum throughout the year. D id you m iss Binche carnival ? Don’t worry, you will stil l have the opportunity to discover Belgian folklore during a very festive weekend. There is another unique event not to be missed from March 11 to 13: the carnival of La Louvière, also called Laetare. What is Laetare? In Latin, it means "rejoice". For three days and three nights, the city will expel winter spirits and encourage spring. The inhabitants of La Louvière have p e r p e t u a t e d t h i s tradition for more than 150 years. The Laetare starts Sunday, early in the morning. The Gilles gather one after another in the different neighborhoods, before joining the center of La Louvière to form a mass gathering. This moment is always very emotional for all the participants, who share a glass of champagne. Around noon, the different companies gather in front of the City Hall for a "rondeau": the Gilles form a circle and dance together. Then they wear the famous feather hat, and offer oranges. Don’t forget that you can't throw an orange back. It’s considered as an insult. The first day of the carnival ends in the evening with fireworks on Place

communale. Monday, at 10 am, the Gilles light up the city center again with their costumes. At 5 p.m., a procession starts on Place Maugrétout with more than 800 participants. The Gilles and "Peasants" walk through the city. The giants are also part of the procession. All the participants reach Place Mansart for a "rondeau" and fireworks. Of course, the Gilles dance to the sound of drums and clarinets. On Tuesday, the carnival of La Louvière ends with a festive night. You will see the Gilles but also clowns, harlequins and more. Arrive early if you want to find a close place to park, and remember to stay safe.u

You may experience some delays while driving in Belgium this season. Road construction projects are occurring throughout the country and may result

in temporary lane closures and road congestion. We will provide regular updates to ensure that the community is informed and prepared.

Please be cautious and patient while driving at all times. If you have questions or would like to report other highway construction sites and road closures, please

email the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux Public Affairs Office at [email protected].

Highway Construction and Road Closures

Andenne/Daussoux (E42/A15): The three-way yard project between Andenne and Daussoulx has been underway since August. This project involves 15 km in both directions. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained. Work is scheduled to be completed by August 2018.

Tournai-Mons (E42): There is still road congestion around Bernissart on E42. Work on the bridge started Nov. 13 and is expected to last two years. Traffic is reduced to one lane in the direction of Mons.

Brussels: Be patient if you are driving on Boulevard de la Woluwe (R22). Traffic is reduced to one lane, and there is road congestion. Road construction is behind schedule. The completion date is to be determined.

Brussels: Renovation of the Reyers tunnels is in progress in the center of Brussels. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. The Reyers-Meiser tunnel is closed in the direction of Meiser for less than two months.

Route d’Ath in Jurbise: After a delay due to bad weather, the road construction project will finaly start March 12 in Jurbise on Route d’Ath. Work is expected to last five weeks. During this period, there will be road congestion in both directions. Construction will be divided in four phases. The first phase (about 10 days) will be Near Les Salons ED Styl (Route d’Ath 162) to Pour Elle shop (Route d’Ath 95). If possible, consider taking an alternative route to your destination.

Saint-Ghislain (RN 547): Pay attention if you are driving on RN 547 in Saint-Ghislain, near Rue de la gare. The road is in very bad condition, and there have been many accidents. Drive carefully.
