125th Anniversary 1887-2012 19
Th I s Y e A r M A r k s t h e 125th anniversary of the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce’s founding in 1887.
The Italy-America Chamber of Commerce (IACC) is an indepen-
dent, private, not-for-profit Us Corporation devoted to fostering
trade, tourism, investments and economic cooperation between
Italy and the United states.
The Chamber is a founding member of the european American Chamber of
Commerce for the U.s. and is affiliated with Assocamerestero, the association
of the Italian Chambers of Commerce abroad which represents more than 70
Chambers all over the world.
The rapidly changing global economy requires an extra edge in order to remain
competitive. The IACC, through its membership network and the affiliation with
Assocamerestero, provides its members with the right business contacts and
global reach.
The Chamber brings together individual entrepreneurs, as well as large corpo-
rations, advancing the interests of its members through contact and interaction
with government agencies, trade associations and international organizations
both in the United states and in Italy. One of the
Chamber’s important roles is to provide assistance
and training for future generations of managers and
entrepreneurs. This is attained through the Young
executive Committee’s activities and also through
the IACC J-1 Visa exchange visitor program.
Members and friends of the Chamber enjoy also
numerous exclusive and classy social activities,
including luncheons, the annual gala and awards
ceremony, conventions, outing and more

The communica-
tion tools of the
IACC, Trade with
Italy magazine and
Inform newsletter,
were enhanced in
2011 with the launch of an improved website: www.italchamber.org. The new
website offers members the solid foundation of 125 years of tradition, enhanced
by modern tools needed in today’s extremely competitive marketplace.
The Chamber maintains trade committees in specific business sectors, includ-
ing specialty food products and apparel. These committees are the main forum
where members from within a commodity sector, debate matters of common
interest, exchange practical business experiences, and develop common
projects.
It is well known that Made in Italy is one of the most valuable assets for Italian
companies, with a significant impact on GdP and the employment rate. Italy
possesses a rich, varied agricultural and food heritage. nowadays, the phenom-
enon of counterfeiting is a worldwide plague. Italian products are often coun-
terfeited and imitated, with the use of Italian “sounding” names or images. The
Chamber has been given the authority by the Italian government to educate
the Us consumer on real Italian products, through the organization of seminars
and food tastings at specialty stores and supermarkets.
Over the years, through changing times and circumstances, the Chamber has
remained steadfast in its mission of promoting trade between Italy and the United
states and in assisting its members in the realization of their objectives.

Following the 2007 world financial
crisis, the Italian government reduced
spending at home and abroad, and
steadily decreased project financing
to all the Italian institutions. To counter
this significant loss of revenues and
achieve financial stability, the IACC
Board decided that the Chamber
should generate new profit making
activities, and continue those initia-
tives that had been proven profitable.
Consequently, the Chamber started new
programs and dramatically increased
the number of trade agreements with
Italian institutions to promote business
and pursue joint projects mostly in the
development of the agriculture sector
and energy infrastructure

Chamber celebrates 150 anniversary of Italy’s unification
On sUndAY, MArCh 27, 2011, the Italian – American community
welcomed Giorgio napolitano, President of the Italian republic to
new York at a luncheon hosted at the Midtown Manhattan’s elegant
st. regis hotel.
Organized by the Italian Consulate General, with the support of the IACC, the
luncheon commemorated the 150th Anniversary of Italy’s unification and brought
together prominent members of the
Italian-American community, includ-
ing business leaders, politicians and
celebrities, as well as representatives
of the Italian diplomatic and cultural
communities in new York.
The Master of Ceremony of the
event was CnBC television journal-
ist, Maria Bartiromo, who spoke along-
side Italian Ambassador to the United
states, h.e. Ambassador Giulio Terzi,
and President napolitano.
President Giorgio Napolitano receives the reproduction of the Italian flag that flew for the first time in American soil, in May 14, 1848
42 Italy-America Chamber of Commerce
On MAY 14 of 1848, a year
of great hopes for the
Italian risorgimento, the tricolor flag – red white
and green – flew for the first time in the port of new York. It had been hoisted on the topmost yard of the Carolina, out of Palermo, on the orders of its commander Corrao, an officer who opposed the Bourbon regime and was a supporter of the movement for Italian
unification. The event was greeted
with considerable enthusiasm by the
small colony of Italians in new York,
among whom were several patriots,
in exile in the Us from the tyranny of
the despots both great and small who were oppressing their country. The offi-cers and crew of the Carolina were given a warm welcome ashore and a delegation from the Italian community asked for and were given the honour of safekeeping, as a holy relic, the first tricolor to fly on American soil. In exchange, the community presented Corrao with another large red, white and green flag which had been fash-ioned for the occasion.
“All we Italians are now brothers, one nation, from the Alps to Mount etna,” declared Giovanni Francesco secchi de Casali, an exile from Piacenza (he had conspired against the ducal
government), during the ceremony of handing over the flag, which was fol-lowed by a parade down Broadway and a religious celebration. On that one occasion at least, both Catholic priests and republican followers of Mazzini celebrated and drank together to the unification of Italy. The roman republic had not yet forced Pius IX to flee to Gaeta, after the great hopes the patriots had placed on him at his election.
The United states were a welcoming refuge for many Italian exiles obliged to flee their country to escape death sentences or long imprisonment in inhuman jails. A large part of the older generation of conspirators, espe-cially those Carbonari who had taken part in the revolutionary movements of 1820-21 and 1831, had settled in new York, and were welcomed by the small Italian community (the massive Italian immigration would begin in the last twenty years of the 19th century), who consisted of businessmen, arti-sans and artists. These exiles were joined by various others after the revolts of 1848-49, as well as the last failed Mazzini-inspired uprisings of the 1850’s. On June 6, 1841, the ‘Central Congregation’ of Giovine Italia was founded in new York, and had several branches in various American cities

where Italian exiles were to be found.
The events of the risorgimento had been followed enthusiastically by the Americans from the very beginning. The patriots were greeted with admira-tion and seen as genuine champions of liberty against tyranny. This was dem-onstrated in 1836 when the Austrian ship hussar arrived at new York carry-ing a group of Italian patriots freed from the terrible prison of spielberg on con-dition that they removed themselves across the Atlantic. The new York newspapers vied with each other in singing the praises of the exiles, many of whom had served heavy prison sentences for alleged political crimes.
The sympathy that the Americans felt for many Italians was further aroused by the recent publication in english of My Prisons by silvio Pellico, in 1836, with notes by Piero Maroncelli of Forlì. Because of his membership in the Carbonari, Pellico had spent many years in spielberg prison, where his right leg had had to be ampu-tated when it became afflicted with gangrene. In 1850, Antonio Meucci, the unacknowledged inventor of the telephone, moved to new York from havana, where a fire that broke out in the Tycon theatre had put an end to his job as a scenery technician for an Italian opera company. In new York Meucci, himself a patriot, soon got in
touch with the Italian exiles and had the honour of accommodating in his house on staten Island the most famous of them all: Giuseppe Garibaldi.
On July 30, 1850, when Garibaldi disembarked from the American ship Waterloo, out of Liverpool, he was 43 years old. he was a legendary figure, well-known and acclaimed all over the world. “This morning,” wrote the new York Tribune, “ there arrived in our city Giuseppe Garibaldi, he of world-
wide fame, the hero of Montevideo and the defender of rome. he will be welcomed by all those who know him for his chivalrous character and his service in the struggle for liberty.”
After the fall of the roman republic, Garibaldi had tried in vain to reach Venice, which was up in arms against the Austrians. during their desper-ate flight his companion Anita had died from exhaustion. hunted by the police forces of half europe, he had in the end decided to sail to America, where, with the help of Italian friends, he hoped to acquire or build a cargo ship, and return to his old occupation of ship master. As he was carried off the Waterloo - a severe attack of arthritis made him incapable of walking - he saw the Italian flag flying beside the

American one in honour of his arrival. Immense celebrations were organised to welcome him, but he politely refused every invitation, and in a letter which made a great impression, explained that he did not feel he should be cele-brated while his homeland still groaned under foreign occupation. For peace and quiet and to regain his strength, Garibaldi accepted the hospitality of Antonio Meucci and his wife ester, who had rented a small villa on staten Island, then a quiet suburb of new York. The villa is still in existence, and houses the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, run by the Italian-American associa-tion ‘The Sons of Italy’. Inevitably,
however, the staten Island refuge soon became a place of pilgrimage for patriots, not only Italians, and politi-cians, publishers, journalists and other admirers, all of them eager to meet the great hero and perhaps speak to him. Among the most assiduous visitors, and at times guests at the villa, were the Piedmontese general Giuseppe Avezzana and the Bolognese writer Quirico Filopanti (alias Giuseppe Barilli), the former had taken part in the uprisings of 1821, fought in the 1848 war and had been war minister in the roman republic, the latter had been a volunteer in the war of 1848,
and subsequently a member of parlia-ment and secretary of the constituent assembly of the roman republic. Both of them, after this period in America, would follow Garibaldi on the cam-paign to liberate south Italy.
Others in the group were the Bolognese major Paolo Bovi Campeggi, a trusty supporter who had lost his right hand in the fighting for the defence of rome, and the tenor Lorenzo salvi, a patriot and friend of Meucci, who had sung Verdi at La scala and was famous for his renditions of Bellini and donizetti. The house on staten Island was always open to all comers, and its table always laid for exiles and sup-
porters of the Italian cause, often to signora Meucci’s consternation as she had to pay for everything from their limited funds. Gentleman that he was, Garibaldi insisted on
earning his keep, and set about looking for work, but was unable to be taken on even as a common sailor. so, with the idea of being able to contribute to the household by going fishing, he con-vinced Meucci, a skilled carpenter, to help him build a boat. After they found the wood, the boat was finished in no time. Garibaldi painted it red, white and green like the Italian flag and chris-tened it Ugo Bassi, in memory of the patriot priest who had followed him on the retreat from rome and who had been shot by an Austrian firing-squad. (Francesco nicotra)
