PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Winter has arrived with some very frosty mornings this week. I am amazed to see some students arrive at school without jumpers and warm clothes. Tis the season for colds and flu’s so be sure to rug up and drink plenty of liquids. We have an increasing number of jumpers and track pants in lost property, however it is really difficult to return them to students when they are not labelled. Can I remind parents to label new jackets and items such as lunch boxes to avoid the expense of replacing these items when lost. Interactive Whiteboards Installed Four new interactive whiteboards have been installed in primary and secondary classrooms this week. At a cost of over $30,000 they provide a very exciting learning tool for students and teachers. Secondary Excursion I have been disappointed by the response to the secondary excursion planned for the end of term. Less than one in five students returned notes to attend the excursion. With such small numbers of students wishing to attend the excursion it is financially unviable. Deposits will be returned over the coming week. Next year we plan to offer a trip to the snow, however once again it will depend on student numbers. As always I encourage all students to make the most of these opportunities as they arise.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK The following students were presented with a book for their great work in writing this week:

OLD ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

REMOVED

The end of an era arrived with the removal of the old primary administration block from the Primary campus last week. The demountable structure, which had been in place for about 25 years, was removed by crane at around 3.00pm on Thursday.

Students w e r e intrigued by the c r a n e brought in to r e m o v e the old building.

Our primary students and staff waited expectantly as the original removal time of

10.30am arrived, but were disappointed to discover that there were mechanical problems with the crane which meant that a new one had to be brought in to complete the task.

It was not until the next day that the staff and students were able to appreciate their new playground space. The removal of the building has really opened up the site and made our playground a safer place to be.

Up, up and away...the crane lifts one of e i g h t sections to be moved.

The crane made short work of lifting and moving the b u i l d i n g sections.

As each section was moved, we could see clearly into the interior of the old building.

All that remained of the old building the next morning were the pillars which supported the building. These have now been removed and the area smoothed over. Work will soon commence on landscaping the area left vacant by the building’s removal.

PRIMARY CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL Our Primary Cross Country Carnival was held on Wednesday 4 May in perfect weather conditions. The carnival was fiercely competed as Wentworth led the Primary boys section (ages 8 to 12), Blaxland had a narrow lead over Oxley in the girls Primary section, Wentworth emerged just ahead of Blaxland in the Infants girls section (ages 5 to 7) with Wentworth slightly ahead of Lawson in the Infants boys section. By the end of the competition there were only 31 points between the winning house and the house which finished in fourth position. Wentworth house (on 150 points) emerged as the winner of the carnival, followed by Oxley, Blaxland and Lawson. Our Primary aged placegetters on the day were:

These students each qualified to compete at the Zone Carnival on Friday 13 May. A Zone Cross Country report is included in this week’s Ringer as well.

Infants results:

Certificates and ribbons will be handed out at one of our assemblies this term. At the end of their race, the competitors all enjoyed a delicious frozen treat supplied by the Adidas Fun Run, as a thank you to all of the students who had raised money to sponsor themselves in the run. Special thanks to Megan Richards and Grace Annard, who each worked as markers on the course, and to Tony and Elisa Liondis who handed out the frozen treats to each competitor at the end of their event.

It was a great day with good sportsmanship displayed by all competitors, along with lots of encouragement from our parents and grandparents, and assistance from the Year 6 students who ran with their Kindergarten pals to encourage them to do their best.

IMPACT STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

On Monday 9 May our 6 Primary leaders, Breanna, Cody, Cara, John, Tylor and Jordan travelled to Newcastle to attend a one day conference on Leadership. The conference covered the 5 principles of leadership: Careful thinking with a view to action, Prioritise your time, Involve others, Recover from setbacks and generosity towards others. It included tips on public speaking and encouraged the many student leaders from several schools throughout the Hunter Valley to network together to discuss their ideas of leadership. The day was filled with fun activities such as the loud noises competition and a dance competition where a group of students and teachers led the whole audience in crazy dance steps. Although we had a very early start and were late arriving home in Merriwa, everyone agreed that they had had a great time and had learnt a lot about leadership. Special thanks to Laurel Whitby for assisting in transporting the students to Newcastle.

HOME READERS

This year we have issued all primary students with a home reader as one of our strategies to improve the reading confidence of all of our students. Here are some frequently asked questions that may help to explain just how important this program will be for our students.

Isn’t it just the teacher’s job to teach my child how to read? The education of your child should be a partnership between the school, your child and yourself. Because of the demands of all of the other subjects that must be taught in a day, or across the week, there is often not enough time to listen to every child read every day. Home reading is another opportunity for them to practise their reading skills. It is an opportunity for you, as their parent, to see how well your child reads and to see their confidence improve as they master new blends and words. It also gives you an opportunity for more together time with your child. The more often that your child

reads to an adult, the better will be their reading skills.

What does the number on my child’s book mean? Each book has a number printed on its cover. This is the level that your child is able to read confidently but is lower than the level that they are working on at school. The higher the number, the harder or more complex the text will be.

How is the level that my child is reading at determined? Our teachers regularly monitor the level that your child is reading at and will make adjustments when they feel that the child is reading fluently and with good understanding, or comprehension. The children are tested using a benchmark kit. Individually, the teacher listens to them read a book on a particular level to determine if they are reading fluently and if they self-correct any errors which they make. They will then ask them a set of questions to test their comprehension.

I think that the text is too easy for my child but the teacher hasn’t changed their level. What can I do to help my child? Although it may appear that your child is reading confidently, it is a fact that sometimes they do not understand what the text is about. To encourage your child to improve further in their reading ability don’t just listen to them read, ask them questions about what they have read and how they know that. For example: they may be able to tell you that we know that the man was angry because he bellowed at the dog.

Why do we have to read the same book more than once in a week? The more often that a text is read, the more confident the child will become in their reading. They will also be able to recognise a word in a new text that they have read in a previous book, thus improving their confidence and reading competence. Reading a book more than once is like practising a football pass more than once, or practising goal shooting in any sport – the more that you practise, the better you will be. Remember: perfect practice makes perfect!

MERRIWA RINGER 19 May 2011 Page 7

MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOL

I don’t have time to listen to my child read each night, but I don’t want my child to fall behind. What can I do? Your child can read to another adult, such as a grandparent, aunt or uncle or an older brother or sister. Our primary teachers have also set up a homework centre after school each day from Monday through to Thursday afternoon. They are more than happy to listen to your child read occasionally too. How do I know that my child is reading at a level that is right for their age and class? The Hunter region sets targets for us to achieve in reading each year. In 2011 our targets are that: 75% of Kindergarten students achieve independent Reading Recovery level 6 or equivalent, 75% of Year 1 students achieve independent Reading Recovery level 16 or equivalent, 75% of Year 2 students achieve independent Reading Recovery level 26 or equivalent. With your help in hearing your child read regularly, we will achieve these targets or even exceed them – wouldn’t that be great!

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY Last Friday 20 Merriwa Central School primary c h i l d r e n headed t o Muswellbrook on a cold and windy day. E v e r y o n e arrived nice and early to walk the 2 or

3km course. This course started with a rather hilly section that continued for about 1km. It then proceeded to even out for a while. The 3km course had another grueling hill section

before a long run back to the finish line. Our children represented our school brilliantly with some excellent results.

Unfortunately we didn’t get anyone through to regionals despite our competitors’ wonderful efforts. A big thank you to Belinda and Elaine Sparrow and Grace Annard who helped to man our checkpoint along the course, allowing me to organize and supervise the children all day. Also, thank you to the parents who helped to transport our representatives over to Muswellbrook. Without you we would not have had such a large and enthusiastic group of children.

GEOGRAPHY FIELD WORK

On the 10 May Years 8 and 10 walked down to the Merriwa River to complete a range of fieldwork activities with representatives from the Wangbangalang Field Studies Centre based in Dubbo and Amanda Gregory from Waterwatch which is supported by the Hunter Central Coast Catchment Management Authority. Students were shown how to complete a number of water quality tests, complete a filed sketch and prepare a transect. Issues such as the management of our local river were discussed and students were asked to observe the riparian zone around the river to note the number of native species as opposed to introduced species. The day was very informative and those students who completed their field work will have a greater understanding of the processes involved in making informed decisions about our local environments. Year 10 are able to use the results from their day to complete their research action plans for geography which is a mandatory requirement for the school certificate. Year 8 also spent some time familiarising themselves with the biotic life found in the river water and were surprised with the number of macro invertebrates that they discovered.

ENGLISH REPORT

On behalf of all here in the English staff, I am most pleased to extend a very big welcome back to all parents, students and staff for what has been, so far, a very busy second term in 2011.

There have been an incredible number of different activities going on since our return from holidays. In Week 2, Miss Hopkins took her Year 9 and 10 Photography class along with some year 7 students down to the Council chambers where they met with Mr Anthony Scully from ABC Open radio. Mr Scully ran students through a valuable photography workshop which required them to take a portrait of a resident of Gumman Place and accompany it with the resident’s life story. Miss Hopkins would like to offer her thanks to the Council for the use of their room, Mr Scully and also the kind residents of Gumman Place. Parents, students and the community will be able to view the portraits and stories online by visiting the ABC website. The Year 7 students will write a newspaper report and editorial based on this excursion for the Newcastle Morning Herald Schools Newspaper Competition.

Currently, Our Year 9 students are completing a writing unit on John Marsden’s best selling young adults novel ‘Tomorrow, When the War Began’. In a recent survey, of 40 000 people in Australia, it was voted the fourth most popular book of all time, behind Lord of the Rings and ahead of the Bible. In 2000, the Swedish government selected ‘Tomorrow, When the War Began’ as the book most likely to inspire a love of reading in young people. Having now finished the novel, I am sure many of the students would agree with these findings. We are now trying our hand at composing our own descriptive writing passages modelled on John Marsden’s techniques from the story.

In Technology many of the projects are nearing completion and I have been ‘blown away’ by the standard of the projects created by the class. Throughout last term students have worked diligently at designing, evaluating and creating their own Community Health Campaigns aimed at educating and preventing

serious illness within Merriwa. Students have selected the issues they feel need addressing within our community and I am greatly pleased with the level of health awareness and maturity shown by these students.

We have two students, Michael and Patrick Gilbey, competing in the Sydney Morning Herald Plain Speaking Awards at Newcastle High School this week and we will report on their achievements in the next report. This competition is a warm up for the Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Eisteddfod which begins in the first week of June. We have a large contingent of speakers in this competition and we look forward to reporting on their performances in the near future.

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

Zone- Cross Country

Congratulations to Summer, Thomas, Sarah, Taine and Tarnisha who ran at Muswellbrook last Friday. Despite the chilly weather, all students competed their best and represented their school fantastically! A special mention should go to Thomas who came 5 and moves to the regional carnival in Maitland next Friday. Great work, Thomas! National Volunteer Week Last week was National Volunteer Week, with the 2011 theme of Inspiring the Volunteer in You. Cassilis Public School wants to acknowledge and thank mums, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, guardians and community volunteers, who support our school through activities such as fundraising, working in the canteen, working bees, sports carnivals, socials, and supporting teaching and learning tasks in classrooms. Student Welfare Cassilis Public School embraces the nine core values of NSW Public Education – Respect Responsibility Integrity Excellence Cooperation Participation Care Fairness Democracy

Everything that happens in our wonderful school occurs with these values in mind. Cassilis is quite simply a wonderful learning environment where all members are respected. It is a school that provides quality educational programs in a warm, caring learning setting. It is a school where education is valued and respected and where as a community we work together ensuring that our students have the very best and varied learning opportunities. This week we are continuing our focus on teaching and encouraging the students to be respectful and also introducing skills required to be safe. During term 2 we are lucky to have the expertise of Mrs Judy McMahon, who is our STLA consultant. some words. Kindergarten and year 1 Tricky Words are ‘for’ and ‘at’, while year 2 Tricky Words are ‘November’ and ‘December’. Writing Last week in writing, students worked together to create three rhyming sentences. Kinder students then chose one of the three sentences to draw, year one chose one of the sentences to write and illustrate and year 2 students created rhyming sentences of their own. Maths In Mathematics last week students were looking at Mass and compared a variety of objects with different masses. This week in Maths students will be focusing on addition and subtraction through a range of relevant games and activities and later converting these into abstract understandings. HSIE Last week in their unit on Meeting Needs, students were given a camping scenario in which they were required to select a limited number of objects to take with them camping. Students had to consider which items they would need and why.

PE Throughout the term in PE students have been learning a different fundamental movement skill each week. Last week students were learning the fundamental skill of catching. This week students will be learning the side gallop. Being Respectful On Wednesday afternoon the children in K-2 had a discussion about what it meant to be respectful. We made two mind maps, 1 showing all the things we can do to be respectful in the classroom and another showing all the things we can do to be respectful in the playground. The children had many wonderful ideas to put forward and showed they knew how to be respectful to our friends, teachers and to ourselves. After our discussion the children chose 1 or 2 examples of being respectful and drew a picture demonstrating this. The older students wrote a sentence about their drawing while the younger students told me what they wanted to write. We have now collated them into a lovely class book to share. Well done, K-2 you have done a terrific job!

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

Kindergarten to Year 12 Catholic Education has never looked so good! I travelled to Aberdeen on Monday for the official opening by Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon, of the new BER funded Trade Training Centre and Science and Language Centre. Congratulations to Mr Tobin and the staff of the Catholic Schools Office, on this fine project. The school facilities are second to none and the range of subjects on offer is indeed extensive. The students greeted and guided us around the school and were a credit to their school and parents. Don’t forget that we would like all new kinder enrolment forms for 2012 in as soon as possible. This will help greatly with our forward planning. Our prayers and thoughts go to Harry Inder and Will Henderson, both of whom have been in hospital last week. We wish them a speedy return to good health. We also offer Natalie Hourn our best wishes after her recent bout in hospital. PJs for Asthma awareness was a very well supported day last week on our coldest morning this year. The children appreciated the opportunity to rug up in their PJs dressing gowns and slippers. NAPLAN testing was completed last week. Thank you to all parents for ensuring your children attended school on each of these days. Well done to all the children who worked hard on the day to ensure their best effort was put into completing the tests and well done to the teachers for their preparation beforehand. The teachers will await the results now so that they may be used to inform future teaching direction for each student. Remember that

these results are a snapshot of the students’ skills as on the days of testing. The teachers have a broad understanding of your child’s progress gained from classroom interactions and assessment items. The Walk a thon to assist the families of school children in Queensland affected by floods was a great success. The spirit of the St Joseph’s students, parents and teachers to become involved in this great fundraiser was very inspirational indeed. Our tiny school community managed to raise the grand sum of $2100.00. the goal, set by the students themselves, was $600.00. The parishioners had already donated $300.00 at the Parish – school dinner. What a wonderful surprise it was to witness such overwhelming generosity for this very worthwhile cause. Thank you Mrs Rachel Healy for organizing the day. The 2011 Mothers’ Day Luncheon was again a wonderful success. Thank you to all who were involved but a very special thank you to Mrs Maria Cameron for her generous gift of time and incredible organisational skills used to plan and execute such a big event. Thanks also to Natalie Hourn for your organisational input before taking ill. The Diocesan Cross Country carnival was held in Tarro on Tuesday. There will be a full report in the next Ringer. Thank you Mr Lannen and Mrs Ninness for managing the team and to the parents who accompanied their children. St Joseph’s Merriwa was fortunate to receive a visit from Youth Liaison Officer, Senior Constable Sheeree Gray on Friday 13 May. Senior Constable discussed with the children the importance of personal safety, bike safety,

and road safety whilst riding a bicycle. The children learnt a lot from the visit and will use the information to help them be safer and more competent bike riders.

Last Friday night and Saturday, I joined three Merriwa Central students in Muswellbrook to attend the Rotary’s Mini United Nations Assembly. Schools from all over the Rotary region from Newcastle/Port Stephens out to Bourke in the West of the state were invited to attend. Each team was given a country to research and then on the weekend they debated issues from that country’s perspective. What an awesome opportunity for our young people. The students entered the assembly nervously but thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience and left it much more confident in their ability to speak publicly and more aware of the role of the United Nations and some of the issues that confront our world today. One experience that I will remember for a long time was sitting in Macca’s at 9.30 on Friday night, with up to 50 students, all taking advantage of the free wireless internet access. Every student was focused on their research. They had a clear purpose for their learning and it was seen as authentic and relevant learning. St Joseph’s Aberdeen was at the MUNA weekend also and I was impressed with these students and their teacher Miss Curran. Our students have a lot to look forward to as they progress on their educational journey. I thank Rotary for giving the youth of our community this and many other valuable opportunities.

Brooklyn’s Developing Creative Skills Brooklyn was so excited that she was to be spending time with Nan on the weekend. She told me numerous times throughout the day. They were going to the Scone Horse Festival. Later during the indoor play session, I walked past the art area to see Brooklyn putting a lot of effort into this wonderful rainbow……

As she reached up high, I asked what else she was painting near the rainbow. I wasn’t surprised to hear that it was Nan. She had

also done a very accurate job of tracing her name on the bottom of her page.

She went on to paint other sisters who would also be spending time, I guessed with Nan. How lovely to know family has such a positive an impact on Brooklyn’s day at Pre-school. She has mixed some of her own colours and squeezed in a lot of family members around and on top of her beautiful rainbow. Hope you enjoy your special time with Nan, Brooklyn!

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care Catering for 5 – 12 year olds

Food plays an important part in the daily plan at MAC. Let’s face it, most kids love eating and they are usually hungry after a day at school. The children seem to enjoy the process of making the food almost as much as eating it. On Afterschool care days we usually cook something simple such as pikelets, biscuits, pizza, muffins, quiche, fritters etc. But during vacation care we have the time to plan more elaborate menus. Last holidays we had several special food days. Good old fashioned Macaroni Cheese was made, not out of a packet, but from scratch. It was so full of flavour, it was delicious. It was healthier than the packet variety. Everyone had seconds and some asked for thirds!! Each holiday we try to incorporate an international food theme, this time around it was an American Diner. We had hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and hash browns. This was washed down with either a chocolate or strawberry milk shake. We made lots of different crafts and at the request of the children we made fork and spoon wind chimes. We made these once before and have some hanging in the= MAC room, they are always receiving nice comments. We had a few local out of centre days too. One day we played tennis at the local courts. We had 6 children on this day so we all had plenty of time on the courts. There was lots of hitting, tons of missing but more than anything there was heaps of giggling. Fishing at the river was another requested activity. We spent an hour down at Jack Crossing throwing our lines in. We felt lots of nibbles and we snagged on many branches but eventually Shai hooked a big carp on her line. Shai managed to pull the fish in very close to the edge but unfortunately it broke the line and swam away. Still, it was very exciting to catch a fish on a handline made from a coke bottle and a hook baited with bread.

What is on at MAC Next Week? Fruit is served at every afternoon tea. Monday - Make Indian head dress/ Noodles Tuesday - Group Games/Cooking Chicken Turnovers Wednesday - Recycle art challenge – make a robot/Pikelets Thursday - Putt Putt Golf/Sandwiches Friday - Games/Hot & Cold/Charades/Saos with spreads or cheese. RECIPE OF THE WEEK CORN SOUP WITH CAPSICUM PUREE

Capsicum Puree 2 red capsicums, quartered 1 small garlic clove, chopped Dash of Tabasco

Corn Soup 30g unsalted butter 1 onion, chopped 1 carrot, chopped 1 leek (white part only), sliced 2 garlic cloves, chopped 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock 6 corn cobs, kernels removed 1 tbsp lemon juice 1/3 cup pure (thin) cream Coriander leaves, to garnish

Method For the capsicum puree: Preheat the grill to

high. Place capsicum on a baking tray lined with foil under the grill for 20 minutes or until skin is charred. Transfer to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, then set aside to cool completely. Once cooled, peel capsicums and place in a blender with garlic and Tabasco. Whiz until a smooth puree, loosening with a little stock or water if necessary. Season and set aside.

To prepare the soup: Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add onion, carrot, leek and garlic, stir occasionally, for 15 minutes. Add the stock, bring to a simmer, then cook for 10-15 minutes until the carrot is tender.

Add the corn and cook for a further 3 minutes, then remove from the heat. Using a slotted spoon, remove and set aside 1/3 cup kernels to use as a garnish.

Using a hand blender, puree the soup until smooth. If desired, pass the soup through a sieve for a smoother texture. Return soup to the pan and place over low heat. Add cream and lemon juice and stir until warmed through. Ladle into bowls and drizzle with capsicum puree. Garnish with coriander and corn kernels.

ST JOSEPH’S MERRIWA PARENTS & FRIENDS MOTHER’S DAY LUNCHEON

Thank you to all the wonderful Merriwa families, businesses, St Anne’s parish, teachers, mums and grandmas who supported our annual luncheon! We served 150 three-course meals which was a fantastic achievement for a small band of parents and friends. The support of our generous sponsors, Max’s Country Cuts, Kemp Rural Partnership, Roberts Meats and Alexander Downs, was very much appreciated and everyone raved about their delicious meats. The St Joseph’s students performed beautifully and everyone enjoyed their singing. Special thanks to all the hard working and talented parents and friends that assisted with arrangements - organising, cooking, slicing, waitressing, washing-up, delivering, packing and unpacking, cleaning, baby-sitting, serving, sewing… It is very rewarding working together for the benefit of our children, meeting new friends and having fun along the way, even when the pace is frenetic! We even had some wonderful staff and ex-student parents chip in to help which goes to show the ongoing support the P&F enjoys and thrives upon. Gloria Duggan’s magnificent floral arrangements were once again our ever-popular Lucky Door prizes and were won by Loretta Cooper and Suzanne Goodear. Our raffle prize winners were Nerida Bailey, Margaret Wright, Jo O’Brien, Ed Shannon, Tanya Ninness, Barbara Cronin, Neil and Debbie Hunt, and Dianne Inder. Many people requested recipes for the meals so I will try and include one each week in the St Joseph’s column so everyone can support our local butchers – we really are lucky to have such high quality ingredients on offer! EQUINE WORKING PARTY TO DRIVE EQUINE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SHIRE

Council has approved the formation of the Upper Hunter Equine Infrastructure Working Party to direct and oversee development of equine infrastructure in the Upper Hunter Shire.

Councillors have been appointed to the committee. Community representatives are George Fraser, Robert Teague, Bob Paton, John Maxwell and Catherine Smith; an experienced group that represent a variety of equine interests across the Shire.

The Working Party will investigate strategic investment in equine infrastructure throughout the Upper Hunter Shire and will make recommendations to Council through the Economic Development & Tourism Committee.

“Council and various community groups have produced a number of equine infrastructure plans over the years to suit varying equine uses. Unfortunately when so many interest groups are involved it can be very challenging to achieve one vision that meets everyone’s wish list.

“Current equine infrastructure projects include the Scone Silhouette Project, developments at the Scone racecourse, finding a suitable location for Polocrosse and the construction of an indoor arena with spectator seating.

“We can’t say where the new arena will be located at this stage given we are currently in discussions with more than one party, but the resources have certainly been set aside for this project,” confirmed UHSC General Manager Daryl Dutton.

It is officially getting cold- it is already snowing and the wind-chill is ridiculous. It is this time of year that we are reminded that it is hard to entertain the kids when it is too cold to go outside. We have the solution. We have just had a shipment of toys and games arrive in store just in time for the winter.

Toys for the boys: Tonka Toughest Minis are great little trucks that are a little smaller than the great big ones that are scattered all over the backyard! They are equipped with lights and sounds and are built to last. They are also able to go on their own- resulting in hours and hours of fun.

Hot Wheels are a great toy for boys as there are so many different types. We have the Video Game Heroes, Vintage Hot Wheels and more.

Fun for the Girls: Barbie is a winner, and we have a few beautiful Barbie’s in store. When you combine Barbie with magical fairies, you can’t go wrong. With wings and pretty pink hair, this Fairy Barbie is bound to be a hit. Barbie can never have too many shoes, accessories or outfits and we have those in stock too. They are a great idea for the kids who have it all!

What better way to spend a dreary afternoon than to have a tea-party. For the perfect tea-party, we have a very cute china tea set. It includes 4 tea cups, 4 plates, milk jug, sugar bowl and a very nice tea-pot.

For the whole gang: There are so many “old-fashioned” games in store. That is, we have a wide range of games and puzzles that do not need batteries, and that don’t plug in to anything! There are

jigsaw puzzles for all age groups. There are games of Fish, Dominoes, Snap, Pictionary Card Games, Checkers, Chess, Snakes and Ladders, Monkeys in a Barrel and more.

There are games that entertain and educate at the same time, including- Days of the Week, Telling the Time, Fractions, Counting, Alphabet and more. They are teaching concepts to the kids without them realizing it. it is a great way to build on what they are doing at school and to take the stress out of the learning process (for the kids and the parents!)

Come In and have a browse of the toy section of the shop and hopefully be inspired for those miserable, cold, windy days that we will be having for the next little while.

Techno Gizmo: There are such a wide range of mobile phones, smart phones, i-pads and other techno gadgetry, that it is hard to keep up. We have mobile phones in store that are from both ends of the spectrum- phones for those who JUST want a phone, to smart phones that are more appealing to those who love all the added ‘stuff’. If we don’t have it in stock, we can get it for you. We have a full catalogue of products for you to choose from.

WOOLBROOK RURAL INDUSTRIES

Britain received a big U boat wake up call very early in WW1 when a German submarine attacked three British cruisers, all named after famous British Victories against France, i.e. HMS Aboukir (Nelson’s Battle of the Nile), Hogue (West Indies), and Cressy (France). The U boat sank one cruiser and, when the others went to rescue survivors, sank both of them too. I suspect this happened before the need for escorting destroyers was realised/appreciated, and it certainly changed one rule, that survivors must be picked up at all costs. From then on, under such circumstances, surviving ships were ordered to leave as fast as they could and bad luck for any survivors in the water, though later with escorting destroyers they would no doubt have set about attacking the U boat responsible. This would not have been easy in those early days as ASDIC was unknown and sonar, even if in use, would have been very crude. Besides the three cruisers U boats sank one or two battleships fairly early in the war, even including one in Scapa Flow, the British Home Fleet base in the Orkney Islands off Scotland. At that time many British Generals still favoured the use of cavalry charges as the ultimate battle winner, and British Admirals often thought of submarines as rather infra dig, not the sort of thing a gentleman would even consider using, so these German achievements must have caused a rethink in Admiralty House. Even though the Japanese were our allies in WW1 they did little except convoy duties with their excellent navy. The Austro-Hungarian-Italian front soon reached much the same stalemate as on the Western (Franco-Belgian) front till the Austrians reorganised themselves and, with German help, inflicted such a decisive defeat on the Italians at the Battle of Caporetto that Britain and France had to send troops they could ill-afford to Italy for fear Italy would collapse. This battle and its aftermath are the setting for Hemingway’s book “A Farewell to Arms”. A ramshackle Russia mostly suffered defeats by the Germans till the revolution of 1917 after which Germany was able to divert most of its troops from (their) eastern Russian frontier to (their) western French-Belgian frontier thus finally realising one of the Allies greatest fears. To enlarge a little on Russia’s final defeat and collapse, a monster, the

revolutionary and extreme socialist, the Bolshevik Lenin, had been trapped and isolated in Switzerland for most of the war and therefore harmless. However, the Germans gave him safe passage by rail to Russia hoping his presence would increase and focus the longstanding revolutionary elements there and cause Russia’s collapse. That plan worked well, however, as we shall see, the fruits of the Russian revolution, while sweet for Germany in the short term, were bitter for her in the long term. A marvellous quotation by Churchill goes something like this, as I recall: “Perhaps to their later regret the Germans placed Lenin, like some loathsome disease, in a sealed railway carriage and transported him across Germany to infect Russia”. To which I might add that Russia did not need infecting, the disease was already there, but Lenin’s presence certainly exacerbated it. With the entire land war stalemated various possible schemes were considered by the Allies to end it in their favour. Some of these were quite way out, such as one which proposed forcing the Skager Rak, the straits between Denmark to the south and Sweden and Norway to the north, and attacking northern Germany with landings on her Baltic Sea coast, e.g. Pomerania. Eventually it was decided to attack Turkey-In-Europe by landing on the Dardanelles, hopefully forcing her out of the war and allowing the Allies to open a new front by attacking Austro-Hungary from the south through what is now Bulgaria and Romania. As we all know it was a failure and Britain is often criticised for this, however every war is replete with successes and failures, in fact most wars are not won by one side but lost by the other. The concept was brilliant, but flawed by its execution at a time when very little was known about large scale amphibious landings, and this lack of knowledge also helped cause a disaster at another smaller landing at Zeebruge (Belgium) in WW1 and even in WW2 at Dieppe, where Canadian soldiers, amongst others, suffered heavy casualties. Indeed proper techniques and equipment for carrying out such landings were not perfected till the Americans did so in the Pacific in WW2, starting with Tarawa, and in the D-Day Normandy landings, and even they made many mistakes before they got it right. Gallipoli could have succeeded, and if it had would most likely have shortened the

war and made Churchill, its chief promoter, a hero. As it was he resigned, went to the front in France, and had to wait twenty five years till 1940 for his time to come. Therefore the Allies had to go far south to attack Turkey, starting at Sharm-El-Sheik on the Red Sea. Many Australians were then sent to France, where they were first in action at Fromelles in 1916. Others remained behind, particularly the Light Horse, and took part in a long, slow advance north through Arabia, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria till the cavalry charge by the Light Horse at Beersheba, the fall of Damascus, and the surrender of all German and Turkish forces there some three years after the Gallipoli landings.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE CATCHMENTS?

Recognising our champions Winners of the 2011 Hunter-Central Rivers Champions of the Catchments Awards were announced at Tocal Field Days on 30 April. The awards, which are coordinated as a partnership between the CMA and the Hunter Region Landcare Network (HRLN), recognise outstanding commitment to Landcare, natural resource management and environmental conservation in the Hunter-Central Rivers catchment. This is the third time the awards have been held.

The winners were Jenny Castles from Shortland to Wallsend Landcare (Landcare Legend over 18 years), Ocean & Coastal Care Initiatives (Coastcare), Shortland to Wallsend Landcare (Community Group and Urban Landcare), Crowdy Head Public School Environment Centre (Education), and Mick Leon and Barry Bungie (Aboriginal). Highly commended awards went to Julia Brougham and Barry Angel (Landcare Legend over 18 years) and Manning Coastcare Group (Community Group). Merit awards went to John and Lyn Edwards (Sustainable Farm Practices), Kooragang Landcare Volunteers (Community Group), Grahamstown Public School and Hunter Region Landcare Network (Education), and Taree Indigenous Development and Employment (Aboriginal). VegWatch is a relatively new program that provides a range of hands-on activities for all sectors of the community to undertake monitoring on the condition of native vegetation communities in their local area. Five upper Hunter schools took part in a pilot of the program in 2009, and nine schools across the lower and upper Hunter are participating in 2011. Participating schools adopt a local bushland area as their VegWatch site and visit in Autumn and Spring to make seasonal observations, photographing, identifying, and recording the various native plants, weeds, insects, birds, and other animals, and fungi they find at their VegWatch site. CMA officers conduct two VegWatch sessions a year with each school, with support from teachers, parents, and other community members. Participating schools each receive a VegWatch kit, containing all of the required equipment, including activity books, reference books, ID guides, binoculars, and measuring and survey

equipment. There are also plenty of additional curriculum-based activities provided through the resource kits that the school community can undertake between VegWatch sessions if they have the capacity and resources to do so. The CMA is seeking funding to continue the VegWatch program and hopes to extend it to other areas within the Hunter-Central Rivers region so that more schools can discover their local bushland areas and take a more active role in managing them into the future. To find out more contact Lorna Adlem at the CMA's Tocal office on 4930 1030. 30 May - CMA Community Assets Workshop @ Scone (5.30-7.30 pm) To RSVP and receive location details phone or email the CMA on 02 4930 1030 or email [email protected]. 3 June - School Planting Day to celebrate World Environment Day School groups are invited to celebrate World Environment Day by getting their hands dirty planting some trees to help revegetate an important area of Kurri Sand Swamp Woodland at Stanford Merthyr Crown Conservation Reserve. WEED ALERT - PATTERSON’S CURSE Patterson’s Curse is an erect annual plant reproducing from seed. Several stems branch from the base of the p l a n t , m u c h branded with stout hairs or bristles.

Paterson’s Curse rosette leaves are stalked, up to 30cm long, oval shaped with distinct lateral veins and are hairy. Flowers are purple and are usually produced from September to December, but can be found at any time of the year, depending upon seasonal conditions. Each flower produces 4 rough brown or grey wrinkled s e e d s surrounded by a husk covered with stiff bristles. The occurrence of this Noxious Weed should be reported o the council prior to any control work being undertaken. Paterson’s Curse contains liver poisons (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) and extended grazing by stock will result in irreversible liver tissue damage. Prevention is the best approach.

NSW FARMERS ASSOCITION On 28 April 2011, the Merriwa branch of the NSW Farmers Association came together to have a joint meeting with the Coolah branch to hear Mrs Fiona Simson the Vice President of the NSW Farmers Association and chairperson of the mining taskforce. Fiona primarily addressed the very complex issues surrounding access agreements and the negotiations that need to take place before anything should be signed allowing access to resource sector companies. It was very informative for all those who attended and we thank her for her time. After Fiona’s information session the two District councils broke for their respective AGMs. Whereby we congratulate Mr Chris Kemp who was returned unopposed to the position of President of our branch, we also congratulate Mr Patrick Ryan who also was returned to the position of Vice President, and look forward to their leadership and guidance of our branch through the next twelve months. Motions for Annual conference (which will be held on July 19-21) were also discussed and the Merriwa branch will be submitting 4 motions this year covering topic such as: the maintenance and upgrade of secondary roads, financial assistance for rural students in tertiary education, the encroachment of the resource sector on prime agricultural land, for landholder assistance with exploration access agreements. This year our branch will be sending 4 delegates down to Sydney to participate in policy decision making and to speak to the motions of our branch. We look forward to hear how they get on. If you would like any further information on our meeting or would like to become a member of the NSW Farmers Association please don’t hesitate the executive.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR UPPER HUNTER WINE AND FOOD AFFAIR

The organizing committee of the Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair are breathing a huge sigh of relief after another fantastic day of gourmet food and brilliant wine went off with a bang last Saturday. The sun once again shone down on the picturesque town of Denman and crowds in the vicinity of 5000 gathered to enjoy the local wines and food on offer.

From 11am people descended on Ogilvie Street with their souvenir glasses and took advantage of the tastings from the wineries in the Upper Hunter region. Major food stalls selling international and home grown flavours were represented along with gourmet and artisan producers with take home delights. Due to major sponsorship, children were also treated to free rides in the Memorial Park and enjoyed shows from Sparkles the Clown, Jake the Magician, face painting from the Fairy Good Elves and temporary tattoos from Baimax. Event organizer Kylie Magner was delighted with the day’s outcome. “Locals really look

forward to this day each y e a r however we also had a huge influx of visitors to the event possibly due to a large advert i s ing push in the C e n t r a l West, up to and beyond T a m w o r t h and below Sydney to Wollongong.

The event continues to grow in popularity and it is such an honour to be part of such a wonderful community in Denman.” The weekend had begun with the extremely popular Bush Poet’s Night on Friday which was again a massive success. Due to the night being sold out, a special Bush Poet’s morning was held on Saturday before the Wine and Food Affair began at 11 and will hopefully become an annual event. The weekend was rounded off with another relaxing day in the sun at Two Rivers Cellar Door on Sunday. Local musician Daryl Bowen played to a very appreciative crowd who took the opportunity to bask in the sunshine and enjoy more wine and food from the Denman area.

This will help save time by avoiding busy periods and queue’s. Please Bring Parcel Cards In! If you get a little red and white card in the mail saying that you have a parcel to pick up then it’s important that you bring the card with you into the Post Office. Thanks to Internet purchases we now receive and store a great many parcels and packages at the PO and the card tells us where to look for them. This saves time and frustration especially when there are queues and we are busy. It also stops us missing a parcel and the customer from making a second trip if there is more than one item to pick up. Even if you don’t have the red/white card try to remember what we have written on it. For example: Registered, Elads, Receipted Delivery, Express, all of which will tell us where to start looking. We also should not give out parcels to other than the addressee. So if you are sending in someone else to pick-up your parcel it’s important that you give them authorisation by completing and signing the section on the bottom of the red & white card. Please help us to help you.

GAS LINE PROPOSAL INFORMATION Eastern Star Gas is proposing to build a gas pipeline between Coolah and Newcastle. It will connect with another pipeline from Eastern Star’s Narrabri Gas Project. The gas will be used for purposes such as electricity generation in the Hunter, liquefied for industrial uses and potentially used by other businesses and communities in the region. Our gas will largely come from under the Pilliga Forest, near Narrabri, not from beneath agricultural land. And we have no plans to use hydraulic fracturing, or “fraccing”. Eastern Star is in the early stages of determining the best route for the pipeline. The pipeline study corridor includes properties located within the Merriwa area. The corridor begins near Coolah, travels towards Bayswater Power Station and then on to Hexham and Newcastle. We are actively talking to local landholders on the study corridor with the aim of minimising the impacts to agriculture and other activities. We’re also assessing flora, fauna and cultural heritage values within the study corridor to

meet our environmental and planning obligations. Routine agricultural activities will be able to continue as before following the construction of the buried pipeline. Landholders will receive compensation for creation of the easement and also for any disturbance and production loss associated with the pipeline construction. A major environmental assessment will be undertaken and publicly displayed later this year, allowing landholders and the wider community to comment further on the proposed pipeline project. If you would like more information on the pipeline proposal, please phone 1300 324 404 or email [email protected]

MERRIWA JUNIOR LEAGUE & NETBALL

All Our Grades for Junior Rugby League played in Denman against their various teams and it was the perfect day for football.

U/6’s Under 6's played against Denman on Saturday, with the boys playing well against a m u c h b i g g e r a n d o l d e r s i d e . All of the boys are gaining more confidence with every game. Well done and keep up the good work.

Matt

U/7’s Under 7’s played against Muswellbrook on Saturday with the boys giving it a go against a strong defence. There was some excellent try scoring from Charlies, Kade and Damian which shows how much they are keen to get that ball over the line. Christian and Will showed some great improvement with their ball handling skills and are really giving it their best; it’s great to see such enthusiasm. All boys have come together quiet well, with a little more practice in their tackling and defence these improvements will show on the field. Keep up the good work boys.

Zoe U/9’s With a team of only four players the Under 9’s are playing some impressive football, Having

four players help us from Muswellbrook 8’s side, we were able to fill a full side again. Anthony and Nick are both doing well, with some great skills showing out there on the field, always keen to have a run. Jackson had a great game scoring two tries. Ben was so unfortunate not to score after a very clever dummy pass, a brilliant run half way down the field, but as always he had a big impact on the game.

Good onya boys, see you at training.

Belinda U/13’s The Merriwa under 13’s took on South Newcastle at Denman on Saturday. An early try to South Newcastle put us on the back foot, but some good defence got us going and Alex Ashman & Jacob Medd both scored tries for Merriwa before half time break. The second half saw tired defence from both sides with 3 consecutive high tackles from South Newcastle earning one of their boys 10 minutes in the sin bin. Another 2 tries to Alex Ashman after some strong determined running put Merriwa in a good position. However South Newcastle come home strongly and the full time score was locked up at 18 all. A good game from all players with our front rowers Clinton Rawlinson and Alex Ashman having outstanding games.

Reminder Merriwa Home Game 28 May, 2011 for grades 6-11 we need Volunteers for both grounds,Refs and Canteen. MERRIWA RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB

Last weekend the Magpies received another forfeit, this time from Aberdeen. The Magpies currently sit in third position one point behind Scone. This Sunday the Magpies play Scone at Scone at 12.30pm. Hope to see you all at the game.

Notice to all Ex-Playing Magpies All ex-players that would like to play in the game being organised for 4 June, training will start on 24 May 6.30pm. There will be four sessions and as most of us are still reasonably fit this should give us the edge to knock the young magpies off.

From the Birds Nest

together. Mackenzie B had a wonderful game especially in GA as did Georgia T, Georgia H & Elly B, they were able to do this so well with the great team work of Jemma G, Ashleigh O, Mackenzie L & Emily N. All the girls are doing so well and improving with each game. They swap positions around each quarter giving each one a chance to understand each position. Magpies came out the winners on the day, though this is not a competitive comp it gives the girls confidence to get out there each week and have a go. Congratulations Magpies!! We are enjoying coaching you all, so thank you. A big thank you to Ashleigh for filling in for us this week and thanks to the parrots for lending Ash to us.

LADIES GOLF We had a fantastic day of golf on Wednesday 11 May when 50 players took to the fairways in our annual Open Day. Ladies from Ariah Park, Scone, Coolah, Albury, Aberdeen, Howlong, Muswellbrook, Deniliquin, Denman, Waratah and Merriwa enjoyed a chilly 18 holes of golf before returning to the club house for a lovely warm lunch and the afternoons prize giving. The overall scratch winner on the day was Simone Williams from Ariah Park who came home with an 84 off the stick, the best nett over the field went to Dawn Jamieson from Aberdeen with an amazing 56 nett and Narelle Rutter from Scone took out the Stableford over the field with 48 points. These ladies get their names engraved on the Sports Club sponsored perpetual trophies for 2011 as well as a replica trophy and prize. Congratulations to Vicki Heaton from Coolah, June Jukes from Scone and Sue Weis from Merriwa for winning the division 1 scratch, nett and stableford respectively. In division 2 Jill Aurisch from Denman, Joyce Pittman from Denman and Barb Sewell from Aberdeen were winners. Margaret Bray from Denman, Val Bowd from Scone and Judy Miller from Aberdeen took home the trophies in the 3rd division. The long drivers for the day were Simone Williams, Narelle Rutter and Margaret Bray and the only nearest the pin went to Joyce Pittman from Denman. A team from Aberdeen consisting of Barb Sewell, Dawn Jamieson &Judy Miller won the teams event. It was a great day enjoyed by everyone. Thankyou once again to Kylie for a lovely warm and tasty lunch which we were all looking forward to. Thanks to Bob Thorley and Geoff Pittman for raking the greens all day. You spoilt us!

Thankyou also to the golf ladies that travelled up from the south for presenting the Merriwa Lady golfers with a beautiful trophy that will be played for annually. The angelic looking ceramic lady in a reclining pose will become the property of the winner until it is competed for in the following year.

The highlight of the day however was the awarding of Life Membership to our own Captain Di Thorley. President Tania made a lovely speech highlighting Captain Di’s years of service to the ladies golf in Merriwa and she also touched on some of Di’s more quirky traits. For those of us who know her well it was amusingly accurate. Captain Di is very well known in district golfing circles and the spontaneous and thunderous standing ovation was testament to the esteem in which she is held.

Di was for one of the few times in her life, speechless.

Tania carefully pinning the Life Membership badge on a speechless Captain Di.
