Annual General Meeting
Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on Monday 16 September at 7.30pm in the Shire Offices. Our exciting guest speaker this year will be Dr Fred Cahir, Associate Professor in Aboriginal History at Federation University in Ballarat. His topic will be: ‘Food from fire, fighting with fire and fighting fire – An illustrated talk about Aboriginal people and fire in colonial Victoria’
Strutt’s painting depicts a scene of mayhem as people and animals scramble to find safety from a cataclysmic fire that swept through Victoria. Come and hear an illustrated presentation by Dr Fred Cahir, who will outline some customary purposes of fire in Aboriginal Victoria – as described in the written records of the 19th century. It will also highlight the heroic roles of Victorian Aboriginal people in times of bush fire – and their use of fire to repel the invaders.
This should be a terrific event! Our AGM business will be short at the beginning and Margaret’s talk will be accompanied by a power point presentation. We will conclude with a hearty supper. All Lintonians, members and non-members, welcome.
Become a member!
With our Annual General Meeting on the horizon, it’s time for membership renewals and a perfect time for you to think about becoming a member of the Society and joining us in some of our activities. New members are very welcome! You will get a copy of our quarterly newsletter, Society Notes, and can join us at our History Nights held throughout the year. Please consider being involved in the preservation and promotion of Linton’s history! Download and complete a membership form from our website or contact us by email, [email protected]
Open Days
Our next Open Day will be on Sunday 8 September, 2-5pm at the Letty Armstrong Resource Centre in Sussex Street. After that, Open Days will be on 13 October, 10 November and 8 December 2-5pm.

CRIME
Winter is almost over. Crime has been relatively quiet.
There however have been some disturbing incidents
they raise concerns for everyone.
Winters are a time when people feel down and out.
Dark and wet days do nothing to chirp up those who
are struggling with life in general. Just because it is
winter, the great weather is around the corner when
everything looks and feels awesome for a few months.
If you are involved in counselling or taking prescribed
medication, please continue to do as your prescribed.
There are usually side effects to everything but taking
your own life is not recommended because just over
the hill, life will be better. We only have one chance.

TRAFFIC
MOBILE PHONES Didn’t I get someone in
trouble the other day. Wow. One husband has the
wood over his wife for a little while. It is imperative
that you are all aware of the consequences. Hefty fines
if caught and possible loss of licence, with the loss of
4 points. It could be the difference and that is without
being involved in an accident.
OCTOBER is historically the worst month for fatality
accidents in the state. You would think, WHY does
this occur. Make sure it is not YOU.
PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF NUMBER
When you ring the police station, there is now another
option for you to be transferred to the Police
Assistance Line (PAL) to report all non urgent crimes.
If you see me around, flag me down to ask me about it
if you have not heard from me. They can be
contacted direct on 131444.

Remember:
• Never leave cooking unattended
• Keep tea-towels and pot-holders away from the stove
• Keep grills, fans and cooking surfaces free from grease and residue
• Keep a fire extinguisher or fire blanket close by
Remember even if it is wet, to continue to register burn-offs with Emergency Services on 1800668511.
It only takes a few minutes to register, and those small piles of damp leaves can get pretty smoky, so a quick phone call can save some inconvenience and embarrassment.

SEPTEMBER 2019
Linton & District Newsletter—September 2019 20
The Carngham Linton Football Netball Club has commenced its finals campaign in the 2019 Central Highlands Football and Netball League junior competitions.
The Under-13 netballers got the ball rolling first at their Qualifying Final against Dunnstown played at Sebastopol. After a tight first half where they held a 15-11
lead, they proceeded to put the foot down in the second half to record a 34-21 triumph to earn a week’s rest and entry into the Preliminary Final to be played at Buninyong on Saturday August 31st. It has been a wonderful effort by the team to date and we look forward to their next game. Good luck girls! The Under-18 footballers finished fifth on the ladder after the home & away rounds and played off against Newlyn in the Elimination final at Buninyong. The Saints steadily
increased the lead at each interval to lead by 16 points at 3-quarter time. An early goal in the last term gave us some nice breathing space and we eventually pushed the margin out to 28 points by game’s end in what was a really even team effort. The Saints then played off against Hepburn in the First Semi-Final at Springbank the following week. In windy conditions, the Under-18 boys went in to the last quarter in front. However, Hepburn made good use of the wind in the final term to come home with a 15-point victory in a high-quality game of football by both sides. The club would like to congratulate the Under-18 players on their season. The way they conducted themselves is a credit to their coaches and parents. Although the semi-final result didn’t go our way, we are very proud of the entire playing group. A special mention to Jake Pring, Andrew Blower and Mike Richardson for their professionalism towards their coaching. A massive thank you to support staff of the Under-18s, team managers, trainers, runners and parents. The club is on good hands for next year and beyond with these boys coming through. We congratulate Under-18 player Josh Foley for finishing runners-up in the Central Highlands Football League Under-18 Best & Fairest. On the netball front, we also congratulate Maddi Lewis on finishing runners-up in the Central Highlands Netball League Under-13 Best & Fairest. Josh and Maddi have played outstanding
seasons for the Saints and their results are very much deserved. The Carngham Linton FNC Senior Presentation Night will be held at the Snake Valley Hall on Saturday September 14
th, commencing at 6.00pm. The junior grades will then
have their presentations the following day on Sunday September 15
th at the Carngham Recreation Reserve
clubrooms, starting at 11:30am.
