Avoid mosquitoes!Especially theones with black

and white zebra stripes, the Aedes Aegypti… notcontent to simply bebothersome, these littledevils also carry dengueand chikungunya viruses, both of which are in anepidemic state in SaintBarth. There has been adengue epidemic foralmost a year, and thechikungunya epidemicbegan in late December,at which point theRegional Health Agencyconfirmed the prolifera-tion of the virus Saint-Barth.

According to a reportdated January 10, thereare 25 cases of chikun-

gunya that have beenconfirmed or judgedprobably since the startof the epidemic, notcounting those still await-ing confirmation viablood test from the 54possible cases seen bydoctors (not to mentionthose people who mighthave the virus and havenot seen a doctor).

The first cases of chikun-gunya in the region wereconfirmed in earlyDecember on the neigh-boring island of SaintMartin. The epidemicthere has spread withclose to 400 suspectedcases and 200 cases con-firmed or consideredprobable as of January 10(A new report should be

out by the end of theweek). According to spe-cialists, the epidemic isthe first of this virus inthe Caribbean as well asthe entire Americas zone.As a tropical virus,Chikungunya is generallynot considered a seriousdisease, and the severecases are less frequentthan severe cases ofdengue. In addition to thesymptoms of dengue—high fever, aches, generaltiredness—Chikungunyais also marked by jointpain, which can some-times be incapacitating, even preventing thepatient from holdingutensils to eat. Some cas-es can be directly or indi-rectly fatal.

According to epidemiol-ogists, this strain of thevirus is Asian, and wasimported to Saint Martinby someone returningfrom a trip. The virus hassince spread to the otherFrench islands, all ofwhich are under surveil-lance. In Martinique,

CHIKUNGUNYA PROGRESSESIN SAINT-BARTH AND THREATENS THE US The epidemic of chikungunya that started inSt Martin in early December continues tospread throughout the French West Indies. This could be a threat to the United States, since the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, whichcarries the virus, is also endemic in certainplaces on the North American continent. Asituation “potentially explosive,” alerts aFrench epidemic expert.

SPRAYINGAGAINSTCHIKUNGUNYA

In its fight againstproliferation of mos-quitoes carrying thechikungunya virus—which has reachedepidemic proportionsin Saint Martin—theCollectivity will con-tinuing spraying in-secticides around theisland as follows:

• Thursday, January16: St Jean, Lorient,and Saline.

• Friday, January 17:Grand Fond, Toiny,Petit and Grand Cul-de-Sac.

• Monday, January20: Marigot, PointeMilou, Vitet, and Ca-maruche.

It is recommended toleave windows anddoors open duringthe spraying. Also besure to empty anystagnant wateraround the house, even in vases andflower pots.

there are as many as120 possible cases, ofwhich 48 are probableor confirmed, and inGuadeloupe, a dozencases have been con-firmed or consideredprobable. But has thevirus been transmittedto other islands as well?Anguilla? The VirginIslands? The Domini-can Republic? PuertoRico? Or even the Unit-ed States?

At the moment, there isno information avail-able. But a Frenchexpert interviewed byAgence France Presse(AFP) considers the sit-uation to be “potentiallyexplosive,” with the riskof transmission of the

virus to the Americas as“extremely high.” Espe-cially as there are manycountries on the Ameri-can continents wherethe Aedes Aegypti mos-quito, which carries thevirus, is endemic, asindicated by professorXavier de Lamballerie, director of the Emer-gence of Viral DiseasesUnit at the University ofAix-Marseille. To pro-tect oneself againstthese mosquitoes, it isadvised to use insectrepellant, and wear longpants and long sleevedshirts as of nightfall. And all residents of theisland should be sure toget rid of any standingwater where mosquitoescould possibly breed.
