Journeyman Linemen Jacob Haselhorst and Jason Deering from Clinton County Electric Cooperative, along with crews from numerous other Illinois electric cooperatives, were sent to South River EMC in Dunn, N.C. to help restore power to members affected by Hurricane Florence. The CCEC crew left the county on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018 and returned on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018. When crews started the restoral process in North Carolina, there were
approximately 30,000 members with-out power. A few short days later, that number was down to approximately 11,000 members without power. Despite this incredible progress, as is often the case during restorations of this scale, the last several thousand meters are the most difficult to restore. The cooperatives deal first with rebuild-ing their main supply lines, to restore power to the most members as quickly as possible, and then on the single-phase lines.
“The North Carolina cooperatives are overwhelmed with gratitude by the response of the Illinois cooperatives and that from across the nation,” said Jim Miles, AIEC manager of safety and loss control and coordinator of the Illinois emergency work plan. “Work, such as this, exhibits the coopera-tive principle of cooperation among cooperatives. We know that if we ever need it, the North Carolina coopera-tives will be happy to reciprocate.”

Twelve 2019 IEC Memorial Scholarships availableClinton County Electric
Cooperative President Bob Kroeger has announced that the Illinois elec-tric cooperatives in 2019 will award 11 academic scholarships to high school seniors through a memorial scholar-ship fund designed to financially assist deserving students in the “electric cooperative family.” In addition, a 12th scholarship – to assist with costs in attending an electric lineworker school – will also be offered.
The total of 12 scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded in 2019 through the Thomas H. Moore Illinois Electric Cooperatives (IEC) Memorial Scholarship Program.
Six scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who are the sons or daughters of an Illinois electric cooperative member receiv-ing service from the cooperative. A seventh scholarship, the Earl W. Struck Memorial Scholarship, will be awarded to a student who is the son or daughter of an Illinois electric
cooperative employee or director. Four additional scholarships are re-served for students enrolling full-time at a two-year Illinois community col-lege who are the sons or daughters of Illinois electric cooperative members, employees or directors.
The 12th annual scholarship, the “LaVern and Nola McEntire Lineworker’s Scholarship,” is a $2,000 scholarship that will help pay for costs to attend the lineworker’s school conducted by the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives in conjunction with Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Ill. Sons and daughters of co-op members; relatives of co-op employ-ees or directors; is enrolled in the Lincoln Land Lineworker’s school; or individuals who have served or are serving in the armed forces or National Guard are all eligible to apply for the lineworker’s scholarship.
“We hope to assist electric cooperative youth while honoring
past rural electric leaders with these scholarships,” says President Kroeger. “Clinton County Electric Cooperative and the other Illinois electric cooperatives are always seeking ways to make a difference in our communities. One of the best ways we can do that is by helping our youth through programs like this one. In addition, we are very pleased to offer the electric lineworker’s scholar-ship. It will benefit not only electric cooperative youth but also those fine men and women who have served their country through their military service and may now be wanting to become a trained lineworker.”
For more information regarding the scholarships, contact Carrie Trame at 800-526-7282 or [email protected]. Information has been shared with area high school guid-ance counselors and is also available for completion at the cooperative’s website www.cceci.com.
