Greetings,

I am pleased and honored to have served asyour SGC of this USC for over eight (8)years. Successes as well as challenges are a part of each year but I am thankful for the faithful group of leaders who help us overcome the adversities and continue to serve our great traditions.

This year, we continue to enjoy growth in our membership as well as a number of deserving elevations from GIG to SGIGstatus. In addition, we received tremendous support through voluntary donations to our Benevolent Foundation. Thank you for your generosity. With the close of our 2014 Annual Session, it was appropriate to pause and reflect on what we have accomplished. Moreover, we continue to seek new and innovative methods to do the business of our organization, with constant objectives of increasing effectiveness and efficiency.

I benefit greatly from the help of our officers as they assist me in addressing the many needs of the organization. Therefore; I place a great deal of time and effort into identifying, developing, and designating people who are willing and qualified to serve in leadership capacities. I thank you, each of you for all that you have done and continue to do on behalf of this organization.

The holiday season is approaching rapidly. Thanksgiving is close, when many will

ILLUSTRIOUS DR. SOLOMON WALLACE, 33˚SOVEREIGN GRAND COMMANDER

gather with family and friends to celebrate.Let me remind you to please take time to remember those who are less fortunate. They may not have the bounty of your feast nor friends and family with whom to share it. Christmas follows when many of you will receive and exchange gifts with loved ones. Just remember, God is love and that love is the greatest gift of all. Until we speak again, we pray that you and your family be blessed with love, hope, peace, and joy; not only during this holiday season but throughout the year.

God Loves you and so do I.

Fraternally,

Dr. Solomon Wallace, 33°Sovereign Grand Commander

Greetings to all, by the time you receive this edition of the Bulletin. We will be approaching the end of the year and therefore it is time for you to start planning for the next United Supreme Council Session. Our session will be held in the Chicago, Illinois, aka “the Windy City.” You should start preparing now. The dates are May 25 and 26, 2015. It is not often that you have the opportunity to visit some of these cities, so you should take advantage of it by planning some extra days in your schedule and avail yourselves to some of the amenity the city has to offer. Remember your organization will be 134 years old and that in itself is something to celebrate. Look for the notice that should be out around the first of the year.

SGIG Horace J. Jackson, 33º, Executive Director

Congratulations are again in order to our Mentors! We have completed five years of successfully promoting the Sovereign Grand Commander’s Vision of Saving the African

American Male: “From Cradle to College”. We have accomplished much we can be proud of but, we still have much to do. We continue to have unwavering support of the Deputies of the Orients involved in the program and all the Fraters who volunteer their time and energy. We are looking forward to more success in the coming school year.

A condensed summary of the Annual Reports for the 2013-2014 School Year follows:

Orient of Illinois/Valley of ChicagoSGIG Melvin Frierson, 33º - Deputy of the OrientSGIG Homer Walton, 33º - Coordinator

Mentors: SGIGs Homer Walton, Charles Burns, GIGs Devinn Jones, Ted Green, SPs Ernest Young, Marshal Coe, Clifford Brown

Western Consistory #28 is thanked for its participation in the Sovereign Grand Commander’s program of “Saving the African American Male from Cradle to College”. The mentoring program was co-sponsored with Simeon Career Academy’s “Young Men of Pride”. In February, five Mentors and eleven Mentees attended the Chicago Auto Show and a good time was had by all (the Mentors provided transportation and food for this activity). A special thanks to SGIG Charles Burns for his monetary donation for this event. Some of our Mentees attended a Cornerstone Laying Ceremony performed by the Grand Lodges of A.F. & A.M. and Prince Hall F & A.M. It was a great experience for them.

In May some of our Mentees participated in an overnight “lock-in” at the school, where they engaged in various social and athletic activities over a twelve hour period, with Mentor supervision. We are looking forward to next year!

the Jeremiah E. Burke High School of Dorchester, MA, which is the target school for our mentoring program within the Boston Public School System. At this meeting, we were introduced to Principal Linda McIntyre and members of her staff by Dr. Carroll Blake, Executive Director of the Achievement Gap and our direct liaison to the School Department. We discussed the overall goals for the program and informed the school that it is our hope to go online this fall. All of our Volunteers have been contacted and a workshop on “How to be a Good and Effective Mentor” was held on Saturday, August 16, 2014. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Blake. We are looking forward to the 2014/2015 School Year with anticipation and enthusiasms.

In June we concluded our fifth year of the Sovereign Grand Commander’s Mentoring Program. As always, the Michigan Council of Deliberation, Wolverine Consistory #6, and the Wolverine Consistory #6 Eagles Club, have given us their unwavering support and to them we give our heartfelt thanks.

The Wolverine Consistory #6 Mentors have volunteered 2,258 hours of service during the 2013/2014 school year. The total includes 438 hours provided to Martin Luther King, Jr. High School and 1,820 hours provided to Allen Academy. A, very special thanks goes out to SGIG Wayne E. Phillips who headed up our program at Allen Academy. The total hours include those of about fifty Prince Hall Masons (including Fraters of Wolverine Consistory #6), Eastern Stars Sisters, and Marracci Temple #13 Shriners who participated with us in the Fifth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and Legacy March, held at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School in January.

Three of our mentees graduated this year. Of the three, two have received scholarships to Historically Black Colleges and one intends to enlist in the United States Army. Thus far (through five years) our Mentees have a 100% graduation rate!

With the assistance of GIG Karl D’Abreu, Sr., a collaborative partnership has been developed with the City of Detroit/NCADD (National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency) Youth Programs. And five Mentees received summer employment.

Dr. Deborah Jenkins and Mr. Richard Walker, Principal and the Assistant Principal, respectively, of Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School, have continued to welcome and support our program for the last five years. This is our first year working with Ms. Monique Phillips, the Principal of Allen Academy, who has enthusiastically embraced our program, and we look forward to working with both schools in the future.

Bezaleel Consistory #15 has mentored John Adams High School for five years and our Mentoring Fraters are greatly appreciated and provide our program tremendous resources, for example; SGIG Leonard B. Jackson is the Commissioner of Athletics for the District and GIG Mark A. Ledger is a Retired Teacher of the District. All of our mentoring Fraters provide us with superior efforts and we can’t thank them enough. And we also appreciate the assistance of Mr. Brian Simmons (the Mentoring Liaison) who has assisted our Fraters for five years as they have mentored the young men at the school (he is also the LINKS Program Coordinator for the school).

Our program ran for a total of eight (8) weeks, during the eight (8) weeks we worked with the Mentees on the following: Tutoring, Study Skills, Cognitive Listening Skills, Test Taking Preparation, Time Management Skills and Career Awareness. A number of Guest Speakers came in and spoke to the Mentees and the Mentees were taken on Field Trips.

Bezaleel Consistory #15 Mentors provided a total of 1579 hours of service for the 2013/2014 school year. We have three Mentees thathave been in the program for the past four years and are now graduating:

1. John Franklin will be attending Morehouse College and playing football.2. Orlando Hopson will be traveling to France to study and see Europe.3. Uris Solomon, a member of the Order of Pythagoras Lake Erie Chapter, will

be attending Cuyahoga Community College and has received an internship with Cleveland Public Power Company.

The need to support young African American males has been extensively researched and documented. Equally there is the need for a nationally recognized male oriented African American organization to meet that challenge. Sovereign Grand Commander, Dr. Solomon Wallace’s vision in 2006 to save the African American males from the cradle to college is a challenge coming to fulfillment in the Orient of Pennsylvania, Valley of Philadelphia. We are extremely proud to say we have provided three years of mentoring services to the same 25 students (2011-2014 grades 6 thru grade 8)!!!

Throughout this school year we had at least five Mentors at each mentoring session and we promoted the following themes:

1. African-American history2. Career awareness and self-assuredness3. Leadership and teamwork

This school year we involved our Mentees in several activities; a few of which are listed here:

1. Making a video of Martin Luther King’s 1963 March on Washington speech, which consisted of more than “I have a dream” segment. This video included the mentors and students. Each Mentor and student received a DVD of the project.

2. We made a video entitled “Black History” written by Ralph Taylor and the students read individual parts of the poem.

3. We also introduce the young men to the sport of golf. 4. The Mentoring program reinforced the students’ knowledge of cursive

writing and the need for students to be able to sign their signature and initials.

This has been another successful year in the Orient of Pennsylvania, in promoting the Sovereign Grand Commander’s Program and we are looking forward to the next school year.

Many thanks to SGIG Harris who spearheaded the mentoring program here in the Orient of Washington and Oregon. Our Mentees are actually talking about going to college, which is something many of their peers do not consider. Our program gives us a good way to have face to face interaction with teenagers who need someone to talk to about things they don’t understand or things they are afraid to speak about with others.

Our Fraters use the team method of mentoring and are with the Mentees at least three days per week. We talk about skills development, organizational/cultural development, and many other topics. Our Mentors engage in “Active Listening”. They listen to, empathize with, and care about the Mentees. And we get positive and constructive feedback from the youth.

All of our Mentors provide excellent mentoring and leadership skills. SGIG Harris and GIG Scott, as well as the other Mentors, provide the Mentees with tremendous role models. GIG King is coaching youth while mentoring to them at the same time. GIG Bell is helping Mentees with Math lessons (utilizing his engineering background). GIG Brown is providing information concerning Computer Systems as well as Computer Programming.

We are encouraged by the responses we get from the Mentees and the Mentors enjoy working with the youth. We hope to attract more Fraters into our program, for we believe the bigger our Mentoring program is, the bigger the impact we can have on our youth. This program provides an excellent vehicle whereby good men can give back to their community.

The Orient of Washington and Oregon continues to whole heartedly embrace the Sovereign Grand Commander’s Program of “Saving the African American Male from Cradle to College” and we’re ready for the next school year.

Haven #7 Consistory Day ProgramIn an effort to introduce more Master Masons to the Scottish Rite, New Haven Consistory held its first Consistory Day program on the grounds of the historical Temple known historically as the Goffe Street Special School for Colored Children, the first school built for Black children in the State of Connecticut. The event attended by Deputy Cherry is designed to gather Master Masons and members of the local Consistory in a casual social cook-out environment so as to get to know them as members of the Scottish Rite in their area and make them aware of the Vision of the Scottish Rite so as to make them interested enough to become members of the Rite. Ill. Commander-in-Chief Web Hallman and his cabinet welcomed and introduced the visiting Master Masons to the many Fraters and Illustrious Sirs in attendance. Applications were available which were signed and turned in to the Illustrious Secretary. A good afternoon was enjoyed by all.

“Our History Should Not Be a Mystery”Do You Know Where Your Consistory’s Name Originated

Submitted By: GIG Reginald Stewart 33º – Bezaleel #15

Pictorial – U.S.C. Session Meet and Greet

If you don’t know where you came from you will not know where youare going. From the time of the formation of our great United Supreme Council

(going strong 133 years since the union) we have grown steadily to encompass 119 numbered consistories in the jurisdiction. Many of them are named after great men in Prince Hall masonry. Others derive their names from books of the Bible or the people within. And still others are merely named for the location where they are located. Some of these consistories no longer exist. When possible, background on the reason for the selection of their names or the person they are named after will be included. Whatever the case may be the stories behind the name of one’s Consistory should be known. Many can say they are proud members “XYZ Consistory #33”, but have no idea why they should be so proud.

Through the next few issues of

The Bulletin I will present background on how and/or why our Consistories are named as they are along with general histories thereof when available.

Special thanks is accorded to Sovereign Grand Commander Solomon Wallace 33º and Sovereign Grand Inspector General Edward M. Brooks II 33º.

Bezaleel #15Valley of Cleveland - Orient of Ohio

Chartered – July 18, 1906

Bezaleel—one of five Consistories in the Orient of Ohio—was an excellent choice for a name it is the largest Consistory in thejurisdiction and as you will

read further, has produced numerous masonic and social “architects”.

Our Convention Director SGIG Charles W. Hales 33º; Assistant Convention Director SGIG Carl A. Williams 33º; and nationally renowned civil rights activist and pastor SGIG Otis Moss Jr. 33º all hail from Bezaleel.

At least four members had the ultimate

honor of a class of Grand InspectorGenerals named after them starting with (then) Lieutenant Grand Commander Leland D. French 33º, class of 1955 and in the wake of his death as Sovereign Grand Commander, class of 1973; SGIG Harry E. Davis 33º, class of 1956; SGIG Charles F. Casterman 33º, class of 1979; and Sovereign Grand Commander Samuel Brogdon Jr. 33º,class of 2004.Additionally Bezaleel has been the home of two of our Sovereign Grand Commanders, SGC Leland D. French 33º and SGCSamuel Brogdon Jr. 33º. Bezaleel shares that distinction with four other Consistories—DeMolay #1, King David #3, Wolverine #6, and New Haven #7.

Charles E. (Edward) Gordon #65Valley of Chester – Orient of PA.

Chartered – January 29, 1936

Charles E. Gordon was a selfless, faithful member of Scottish Rite masonry. There is not enough space to list all the kind words, works performed, and

honors accorded to this stellar individualin Prince Hall masonry—“a Peer of unusual distinction.”

Illustrious Gordon was a member of and served as the titular head of all the masonic houses in Cleveland and, arguably, would have been the first member of the Knight York Cross of Honor in Cleveland if it had been established at the time. He also served as the Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Most Illustrious Grand Thrice Illustrious,Master, and Right Eminent GrandCommander. His masonic labors did not end there. He was a charter member and first Illustrious Potentate of El Hasa #28 and a Past Commander-in-Chief of Bezaleel #15. He served this United Supreme Council as the Deputy of theOrient of Ohio and as Treasurer-General of the Holy Empire.

Those that have read our history book are aware that he is also notable for bequeathing to our United Supreme Council certain real estate that was subsequently sold. The funds were used to eliminate past due interest debt that accrued on the loan used to finance construction of our Cathedral.

At its inception the Fraters of Chester, Pennsylvania named their newly constituted Consistory in his honor. Of note, the Editor of The Bulletin, SGIG Edward M. Brooks II 33º hails from this Consistory.

Thanks to GIG Robert L. Alexander 33º, Valley of Cleveland – Orient of Ohio for his assistance.

Joshua D. (David) Kelly #27Valley of Omaha – Orient of Nebraska

Chartered circa 1911This one should be a no brainier for students of our history. Illustrious Joshua David Kelly 33º was the seventh of our esteemed Sovereign Grand Commanders serving from

1899 through 1910. Hailing from DeMolay #1, Valley of Philadelphia,

Orient of Pennsylvania he was a Most Worshipful Past Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. Purportedly Illustrious Kelly received the Scottish Rite degrees from Sovereign Grand Commander Lemuel G. Griffin,Supreme Council, 33º, AASR, for the Southern States (Baltimore) in 1871.Of note is the fact that Illustrious Kelly was also the first Sovereign Grand Commander of the King Fredrick Supreme Council, 33º, AASR, which predates the formation of our current United Supreme Council. As such, he along with another Scottish Rite luminary, Illustrious William Frank Powell 33º (who also has a Consistory in Iowa named after him), was one the signatories, on behalf of his Supreme Council, of the Articles of Union which brought the United Supreme Council, Northern Jurisdiction into existence from the five that existed before.

“E PLURIBUS UNUM” is no truer phrase for what he helped to usher in. Sovereign Grand Commander James F. Rickards 33º organized this Consistory himself naming it in honor of his predecessor. This is the first instance of a new Consistory being named in honor of a member of a previously established Consistory. There existed a predecessor Consistory named Knights of St. John although it is not know the exact origins or disposition of this body prior to the formation of Joshua D. Kelly #27.

William Frank Powell #46Valley of Des Moines – Orient of Iowa

(Constituted May 13, 1947)

A true pillar of society, William Frank (Francis) Powell lived a full life. From establishing the first State school for Blacks in Alexandria, Virginia to

serving as a principal at and superintendent of schools in Bordentown, New Jersey to being appointed by President William McKinley as the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Haiti and Chargé d’Affaires of the Dominican Republic, this fellow exemplified what being a just and upright man was.Illustrious Powell—an original member of the King Fredrick Supreme Council, 33º, AASR—was one the signatories of the Articles of Union which brought the United Supreme Council, Northern Jurisdiction into existence. He was also a

Most Worshipful Past Grand Master ofthe Most Worshipful United Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, State of New Jersey and Jurisdiction (its name and style at that time . . . now known as the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New Jersey). A dedicatedMason he was also a Most Excellent Past Grand High Priest and a Past Right Eminent Grand Commander.

Illustrious Powell was present at or took part in most every meeting or event that led up to the union of Supreme Councils. His name appears prominently in the annals of Scottish Rite history in that ear.

His legacy lives on in the form of an elementary school in Camden, New Jersey named after him—William F. Powell Elementary School.

Thanks to SGIG Owen T. Sloan 33º, Valley of Des Moines, Orient of Iowa and GIG Eric Malone 33º, J.A. Henry #48, Valley of Nashville, Orient of Tennessee (United Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, PHA) for their assistance.

Errol Walton Barrow #109Valley of Bridgetown (Barbados)

Orient of New York

I bet many of you (save for those belonging to the Orient of New York) did not even know we had a Consistory in Barbados did you? Errol Walton Barrow is a legendary figure in

the country of Barbados. He wasextremely integral in developing and

guiding Prince Hall masonry in its early development in the country. He was a two-time Prime Minister (served as Barbados first) and was a leader extraordinaire. He is revered for leading Barbados to its independence from England. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and is recognized as one of the Great Black Men of Masonry and is included in a book of the same name. This Consistory began life as Barbados Consistory UD. So beloved is he in Barbados that his image graces their $50 bill. His birthday, January 21, is celebrated as a national holiday.

The Patron Saint of OUR beloved order of freemasonry—Prince Hall—was born in this very locale 266 years ago.

Thanks to SP Barry B.L. Brome 32º, Valley of Bridgetown (Barbados), Orient of New York for his assistance.

The recent designation of the 6400 block of Emlen Street — between West Upsal and West Johnson Streets east of Germantown Avenue—honors Jones who served as the senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church of Germantown for 31 years before he retired in June.“To commemorate the designation, members

from Grace Baptist and from the 6400 block of Emlen gathered at the church’s James B. Murray Social Hall at 25 W. Johnson St. on March 8 for an “Afternoon Tea and Hymn Festival,” followed by the official street dedication.“We are excited that our street is dedicated to

Rev. Jones,” said Laverne Williams, who has lived on the 6400 block of Emlen Street more than 45 years and is the first lady of the Mount Airy United Fellowship Church. “The pastor has always been very gracious. Before we moved to Emlen we lived on Carnation Street which is still in the same area. The decision to name the street was wonderful because this church has always been an asset to the community.” On hand for the gala were Grace Baptist’s interim pastor the Rev. Quintin L. Robertson, assistant pastor the Rev. Merle D. McJunkin, pastor emeritus the Rev. G. Daniel Jones, and Deacon Tyrone L. Beach, Sr., among the elected officials in attendance were 8th-District City.On hand for the gala were Grace Baptist’s interim pastor the Rev. Quintin L. Robertson, assistant pastor the Rev. Merle D. McJunkin, pastor emeritus the Rev. G. Daniel Jones, and Deacon Tyrone L. Beach, Sr., among theelected officials in attendance were 8th-District City Councilwoman Cindy Bass and Marlow Marshall, the judge of elections.

In his remarks, the Rev. Joseph Williams, Jr., pastor of the First United Fellowship Church, gave a presentation from the neighbors of the 6400 block of Emlen.“This is good,” Williams said. “We hope that Dr. Jones will come back again and again. This is a street to see.”The program opened with a performance of “The Lord’s Prayer” by member Dawn Morgan Moore, who received a standing ovation for her interpretation of the classic. The event’s chair, Dolores Stovall, read the statement of purpose and traced the street designation trail to its final approval last September. Eloise Vaughn, a member of the hospitality ministry, delivered the welcome.Marshall, who has served in the 59th Ward’s 24th Division for more than 19 years, called Jones “a blessing to the community.” Bass then commended Jones for the community outreach of the church before pointing to a couple of comments on the City Council Resolution signed by her. Then Don Jose Stovall read the official presentation award from the neighbors of the 6400 block of Emlen who were unanimous in their support of renaming their street.Jones was born in Norfolk, and graduated from Virginia Union University with a bachelor’s of science in mathematics, from Andover Theological School in Massachusetts with a master’s in divinity, with a doctorate in ministry from Howard University’s School of Divinity. He also holds honorary doctorates from Virginia Union and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. Jones served as Moderator of the oldest Baptist Association in the United States, the Philadelphia Baptist Association, which has 120 churches representing 13 or 14 languages, according to the church. Jones is a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was the grand chaplain of the Prince Hall Masons of Pennsylvania until 2012.The Rev. Flora Anderson, pastor of New Horizon Baptist Church, said Grace Baptist was more than a church because it served an integral institution in the Northwest Philadelphia area. The Rev. W. Fleming, pastor of St. Joseph Baptist, graced the crowd with a vocal solo before Leo V. Thorne, associate general secretary of resource development for the American Baptist Churches USA, gave an affirmation for Jones.“This is an honor,” said Jones in his remarks. He stressed the need for the church tocontinue working on social justice issues. He underscored the importance of having a church in the community, but said houses ofworship need to contribute to the health of the

community. Jones said one way to do this is to have a healthy church environment. This, he said, is the legacy of which he is most proud.“We are very pleased but not surprised that you are being recognized in the designation of the 6400 block of Emlen Street as Dr. G. Daniel Jones Way,” the Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley, from the American Baptist Churches USA, said in his March 8th correspondence. “I hope that those words come to be a reminder to all who pass by more than just a name of a street, but of the true Way of Dr. G. Daniel Jones. You have shown the way to live throughout your life.”

U.S.C. Medical CommissionMedical Report from the 2014 USC Session

Submitted by SGIG Dr. Chester Pryor, II - Ill. Director of Medical Services

The most significant highlight of the year for the Pennsylvania Council of Deliberation (PACOD) was held on Sunday, June 8, 2014. For the first time in the History of our PACOD, the Annual Festive Day of Whit Sunday and the Most Excellent Grand Chapter, Holy Royal Arch Mason’s Zerubabbel Day, were held as a joint service. The two Prince Hall Family’s Festive Days fell on the same day this year. In order to resolve this problem, an agreement was made between MICIC George M. Calloway, 33º and MEGHP Jimmie Hare to have a joint celebration. This Historic event was held in two locations, the St. Matthews A.M.E. Church, Philadelphia, PA and the Prince Hall Masonic Temple in Wilkinsburg, PA. Both events were very successful and very well attended. The following is a summary of the event held at the St. Matthews A.M.E. Church. The ALPHA was October 3, 2013, when I was made aware of the fact that in the year 2014 there would be a conflict with Whit Sunday and Zerubbabel Day, falling on the same Sunday. From that period to 9 months later on the day of June 8, 2014 there was many days of planning, protocols being establishment, confusion and ultimately, through it all, it was love that brought this family together at the St. Matthew A.M.E. Church to celebrate this HISTORIC event. The OMEGA was the (9) months of planning. The Master of Ceremonies was SGIG Elmer Evans and the Speaker of the hour was GIG

Rev. Dr. Ronnie B. Tucker, Sr. #9. Also in attendance were MWGM Dr. Murphy J. Keller III, MWPHGL of PA, MEGHP Jimmie Hare, Sr., and the Officers and Members of HRAM and members of the entire Prince Hall Family.MICIC George M. Calloway, 33º thanked everyone who contributed to the culmination of this Historic event, which hopefully will continue in the future whenever the calendar requires. He went on to thank MEGHP Rev. Jimmie Hare, Sr., and his members, for their participation in this effort. He also thanked MWGM Dr. Murphy J. Keller III, for Proclamation #6, which spread the word throughout the Jurisdiction and the Master Masons responded. MICIC Calloway also extended an apology to anyone who may have been offended during the planning process. We may have made some mistakes, but hopefully, they will be charged to the head and not the heart, for lack of experience with this venture, and when brought to our attention, will be corrected in the future.Ill. Calloway recognized those USC Officers elected and appointed in attendance and they were; Ill. Lorenzo Cruger, Secretary General, H.E., Ill. Raynard Hughes, Cathedral Secretary, Ill. Roland K. Lee, USC Budget Director and Overseer of DeMolay #1, SGIG John Paul Simpkins and SGIG Edward M. Brooks II, Editor Bulletin/Assist to the Grand Recording Secretary. He then recognized the elected and appointed Officers of the PA COD and those in

attendance were; GIG Ruben Collins, 1st Lt.Commander, SGIGs Elmer E. Evans, 2nd Lt. Commander, Otis L. Hightower, Asst. to the Deputy, Gr. Treas., and Overseer for MLK, Jr. #86, Willie W. McCoy, Grand Secretary, Edward M. Brooks II, Recording Secretary and Overseer for Charles. E. Gordon #65 andGIG James A. Duckett, Convention Director. Having just concluded the 133rd USC Annual Session he welcomed the newly coronated SGIGs to their first gathering, Michael L. Askew, Elmer E. Evans and Dr. Clifford E. DeBaptiste.Ill. Calloway recognized one of our Historic Military Heroes who passed away in December, the senior Active, Ill. Samuel C. Hunter, Jr., Deputy for CO/UT/WY, a member of the Historic Tuskegee Airmen, before welcoming the newly elevated Grand Inspectors General of the Samuel C. Hunter, Jr., Class of 2014.

He then congratulated, four (4) of our Sovereign Grand Inspectors General who, for their devoted service to the United Supreme Council, were awarded the highest honor presented by the USC, the “Gold Medal of Achievement Award,” they were; SGIGs Roland K. Lee, Edward M. Brooks II, George E. Dickerson and George M. Calloway,Deputy for the Orient of Pennsylvania.

This turned out to be a very successful endeavor and received many positive comments from the memberships of the PACOD, HRAMs and the PH Family.

PA Council of Deliberation Whit Sunday/Zerubabbel Day

Submitted by Ill. George M. Calloway – Deputy for PA

The Medical Services Commission activities encompassed an evaluation of the Samuel C. Hunter, Jr., 2014 Class consisting of one hundred forty (140) members; the B Albert Ford Health Symposium and counseled several members and guest. The Samuel Hunter Class evaluation revealed ninety members (64%) are being treated for hypertension (high blood pressure); thirty-six members (26%) for diabetes mellitus; twenty members for high cholesterol (14%). Ten members (7%) weight was very high; eleven members (8%) have prostate cancer and eleven (8%) members have coronary artery disease. Asthma is increasing among senior people thirteen or (9%) of the members. The B Albert Ford Health Symposium Panel opened the program by five minute introduction of the following prevalent diseases: Ill. Richard Gordon discussed hypertension; Ill. Roland C. McGoodwin, discussed exercise; Ill. Walter Bantom, III

discussed diabetes mellitus; SP Keith Melvin, a twelve (12) year survivor, discussed prostate cancer; Ill. Kenneth Walton presented helpful points in taking medications. The audience was very inquisitive about these topics. What is over weight? A body mass index (BMI) above twenty-five means you are overweight. A BMI of thirty (30) means your health is or will be impaired. The cost of medicine may be $2000 per year; difficulty getting around or leaving your home; surgery--joint replacement, heart bypass, renal transplant; mark reduction of your overall actives; daily or more injections etc. to name a few. You get the idea.It is your right to ask your Doctor for a DIET to CHANGE your food selection AND NOT a calorie count. THIS IS A DIETRY HABIT CHANGE. LESS useless weight MEANS more energy and HIGHER QUALITY of lifeactivities. A DIETITION can make lifeenjoyable.

Our nurse of thirty-eight years or more PGLLR, Freddie Simmons, Ill. Charles H. Waples and Ill. Hobart Price will return.

FIRST ASK your doctor to clear you for exercise AND REFER you to an EXERCISE PROGRAM. Often odd days are cardiovascular exercise and the other days are upper and lower body strengthening exercises.

EXERCISE can lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar, reduce insulin resistance, and replace fat with muscle-smaller waistline with the same or more weight. EXERCISE IS AS IMPORTANT AS MEDICINE IF NOT MORE SO.

The Samuel C. Hunter, Jr., Class of 2014 as well as the Medical Services Committee is grateful to the USC Cabinet, generating the time to attend the B. Albert Ford Symposium and the gracious remarks by Dr. Solomon Wallace, Sovereign Grand Commander.

What Is AlchemySubmitted By – SGIG Michael Askew

The lips of wisdom are closed except to the ears of understanding-Hermetic Proverb

What is Alchemy?A Speculative Science or

Philosophy to transmute base metals into Gold. During the 17th and 18th century there was a Rosicrucian tradition devoted to esoteric wisdom with the emphasis on psychic and spiritual enlightenment by achieving a power or process of transforming something common into something precious. Reinhard Federmann, in his book, The Royal Art of Alchemy notes, "Gold when first dug from the earth some five millennia ago (in Nubia, circa 3500 B.C.) it was considered holy; it was the sun brought to earth, and the sun was God". The definition of Alchemy, according to Titus Burckhardt in his book, Alchemy, "The expression alchemia derives from the Arabic al-kimiya which is said to derive from the Ancient Egyptian keme-areference to the "black earth" which was

a designation of Egypt". Manly P. Hall, 33º writes in, The Secret Teaching of All Ages, "Alchemy, the secret art of the land of Khem, is one of the two oldest sciences known to mankind and the other being Astrology". Robert Moray, Elias Ashmole, Francis Bacon and Christopher Wren were Rosicrucian and members of The Society of the Rose Cross and the Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons. They were profound thinker who studied alchemical traditions and symbols. Their influence and understanding of esoteric philosophy and alchemical traditions; especially psychic and spiritual enlightenment enhanced the esoteric philosophy of Freemasonry. Subsequently this transformed Freemasonry's, Operative Art to a Speculative Science; the spiritual significance of the builders tools (a more noble and glorious purpose).

In addition Rex R. Hutchens, 33º in Pillars of Wisdom, notes Albert Pike's Morals and Dogma, 28th Degree-Knight of the Sun or Prince Adept "contains many references to speculative alchemy; the most extensive passage is from pages 772 to 792 (pages

878 to 895 annotated edition) and within this section he discusses the alchemical equivalents of some Scottish Rite Masonry's important symbols - the Double Triangle of Solomon, the Triads (Salt, Sulphur, Mercury; the Fixed, the Volitile, the Absolute), the doctrine of contraries, and the resultant harmony or equilibrium. In alchemy Pike found additional confirmation of his Unity Concept - the idea that there existed a unified system of knowledge shared by all of mankind". "The mysterious doctrine of alchemy pertains to a hidden reality of the highest order which constitutes the underlying essence of all truths and all religions. Alchemy is a rainbow bridging the chasm between the earthly and heavenly planes, between matter and spirit. Any descent within oneself - any look within is at the same time an Ascent an Assumption a look towards the true reality without. The renunciation of oneself is the source of all humility, as well as the basis of any true self. But he who stops there remains halfway. The second step must be an efficacious look without, an active, autonomous and preserving observation of the outside world".

“The Children’s, Joy Foundation, Inc.”Republic of the Philippines

J.C. Logan Consistory No. 114Submitted By: GIG Lorenzo Johnson, 33º - J.C. Logan Consistory #114

Members of the Far East Orient make a difference in everyclime and place.

Fraters of J.C. Logan Consistory #114 truly understand the value in "giving". Despite encountering typhoon conditions upon their arrival in the Philippines for the 43rd Annual Council of Deliberations, members rallied together to fulfill their philanthropic goals, impacting the lives of Filipino children through charitable contributions. Pictured to the left is the entrance to the Children's Foundation.

Since being introduced to the organization, by GIG Douglas Baker, Keystone #85, members of J. C. Logan #114 have visited and contributed to the children on every visit to the country. Members have provided the foundation with a flat screen television for the girl's dorm, two complete computers and a printer for their study room, an air conditioner for the study room, various amounts of toiletries, food, and monetary donations.

During the October 2013 visit, members donated clothes, food, and six (6) fans for use in common areas throughout the center. SPs Timothy Lester and James Gilbert purchased fans at the local mall. The Consistory was pleased to have members of Keystone #85 assisting in this visit. GIG Tommy Denton donated funds for clothes and GIG Robert Deloney donated clothes and traveled with our Fraters during the visit. During our visit, the children demonstrated their appreciation by performing local dances and songs. These performances are heartfelt; and beyond a doubt, they are the highlight of our trip.

The director for the San Fernando center of "The Children's Joy Foundation, Inc." is Ms. Marilou Tolenada. She is a humble person, dedicated to bettering the lives of these children and has always been a joy to work with.
