We started with our Open subject judging by Gordon Dean PSQA. Gordon was able to help members with his helpful commentary and evaluation, all delivered with a great sense of humour. This was possibly Gordon’s last judging for us, as he is shifting to the north side of the Brisbane River to the fabulous north coast hinterland. Maybe we can catch him when he is travelling to through to his Gold Coast based activities? Many thanks Gordon. Our Second Master Series speaker was Ron Willems FPSNZ ARPS AAPS. Our thanks go to the Victoria Point Community Bank for their continuing sponsorship which aided us in obtaining such a talented presenter. Ron was joined by his wife, Joy, who participated with Club members over the three day visit. The two day workshop was very well received by thirty attendees. Ron gave us the benefit of his skills and knowledge and helped remove many of the “mental” roadblocks some of us had with Photoshop. Now it is practice, practice, practice until we get what we want. On Monday evening, about eighty members and visitors heard Ron’s “Digital Kiss” presentation. Ron covered all aspects of digital photography from the film (now a digital camera) to the finished projected image or print. On the journey, we found that a fine quality, large jpeg image, when correctly exposed in camera will produce images comparable to an image obtained by the use of camera raw format and its subsequent post processing. Ron promoted the idea of a monopod rather than a tripod for getting those low shutter speed shots. He recommended a unit which can take about 10Kg. A DSLR with a fast telephoto can weigh in at over 2kg. It is also handy as a hiking staff. Many thanks Ron and Joy. Some of you have expressed an interest in a Photoshop Elements based workshop. The Elements price is much less than Photoshop CS5 and is almost as well packed with features and functions. If you are interested in an Elements only workshop, a full Saturday or a half Saturday please let me know by contacting me at

Hello Everyone What a great month we have had! We started with our Open subject judging by Gordon Dean PSQA. This was possibly Gordon’s last judging for us, as he is shifting to the north side of the Brisbane River to the fabulous north coast hinterland. [email protected] or, let any of the committee members know what your preferences would be. Another vexing question is how do you travel on your holidays and protect your valuable “rolls of exposed film”, (read camera storage cards), so that they do not get damaged or lost etc. Ron is an advocate of efficient photography, take the best possible situation image and don’t keep the images which are not really what you wanted. This raises the issue of what do you store your holiday images on? Do you have many eg. 1gb cards, fill them with quality images and then put them aside not to be used until you load them into your home based computer? The fine quality large jpeg images are about 5mb to 10mb so a 1gb card holds between 100 -200 images. A quick scan of retailers on the internet shows that 2g SD cards are about $11 each; 4g SD are $17 each. Those of us with CF cards are being singled out a bit, as the CF card is being replaced by SD cards in the newer Canon DSLRs. CF 2gb are $30 each. If you are retaining the best shots, how many cards do you need for the duration of your holidays? The camera storage cards are fairly robust and are easily stored in your luggage. Alternative storage strategies are a laptop with large HDD ($1000+); Photo vaults ($700+); notebook computer ($500+) with USB External HDD ($100+) or USB External DVD dual layer burner ($100+) or both. I am starting a thread on the club site to canvas what members do in order to have safe storage/backup of their images whilst away from home. The 12th National Exhibition working bees start shortly, and if you can assist, please let me or Allen Forbes know. The working bee timetables are listed on the club site. Well that’s it from me Cheers Len Maloney

A Note from our Program Director

Greetings Well our exciting two months is now upon us and I have had many favourable comments re the Ron Willems week-end. Ron, who did not charge for his services and whose air-fares were donated by the Victoria Point Community Bank, really enjoyed visiting the Redlands and his visit to our Club. It was great that he has recovered from his accident tripping over a dog and fracturing his skull. This occurred at Walgett NSW on his way to the Redlands. The local hospital was unable to cope with the injury and he was flown to Sydney for specialist treatment. Ron and Joy will now spend a few days at Tweed Heads and Bundaberg before returning to Christchurch on July 30th. A special thanks to all who helped make this visit a successful one.

He joined the Anglo-Australian Observatory as its Photographic Scientist in August 1975. He is now Adjunct Professor of Scientific Photography at RMIT University Melbourne. He developed hyper sensitizing processes which give enormous gains in speed to the photographic materials used in photography. He also invented new ways of revealing information on astronomical plates , a specialty which has given him an International reputation. These novel image enhancements quickly led to the discovery of two new types of galaxy and in 1987, he discovered an extremely faint but massive galaxy which has been named Malin -1. It's Al-thani time again! from Pia Jessen

The International group is again sending print and digital entries to the Al-thani - Award for Photography. Download the interactive pdf (type in your details, then print) and begin to prepare your entries. http://www.al-thaniaward.com/index.php This competition is for individuals and we send our entry across as a group. Entering this competition as a group gives us a cheaper entry fee and we don't have to pay return postage for prints/CD's. Another advantage of sending our entries across as a group is our unmatted prints are flat-packed, which takes the hassle out of sending prints international.

** Please note - OUR Deadline is end of August

Every entry receives a quality (large) hard-cover coffee table book full of beautiful photography. This years special theme is: Planet Earth, Landscapes around the world. Check the forum for more details.

MISR - A Photographic Exploration of Egypt Experience much of what Egypt has to offer as participants in the 2009 Egypt excursion share a selection of their photographic work with you. The exhibition will take you from Abu Simbel to Alexandria through dazzling desserts and down the deadly Nile while conveying a sense of the contrast in culture and diversity of its people. Hopefully this exhibit will inspire you with its account of Pharonic sites, souks, Mt Sanai region and even tempt you to consider next years trip. The exhibit runs from August 7 - 14 at the Project Gallery in the Webb Centre Building Griffith University’s Southbank Campus at 226 Grey Street with the official opening 6.30pm Sat the 7th of August.
